“Connect the dots” Essay
15, December 2011

Today, I am an artist sponsored by Roseta Santiago, who is also an artist. It has been quite a journey full of surprises, mistakes, success, and disappointments. I never expected to make it this far, I could only dream of this to happen to me. Now that my dream is a reality, I am just going to live it and hopefully one day, I’ll make it to the top! As a kid in elementary school, I always loved to doodle on my notes and I would enjoy going to art class and making little clay pots and whatnot. I was just always drawing at home, school, and wherever I was. Even though I would draw a lot, I never thought or believed that it would get me somewhere in life, because you would never think of asking a kid what he or she want to be in life and getting the response: “I want to be an artist”. Once I got into middle school, I had this sudden interest in art because I was alright at it and I really didn’t like anything else. Although I liked it so much, I would still never think of telling people my interest in it. I always thought for the longest time that art was just a hobby, that it wouldn’t get me anywhere. As I went through seventh and eighth grade, my passion and interest in art grew even more. Still, I didn’t like art enough to think of it as an occupation because everyone else would always think to be a doctor or lawyer, I was still “exploring” my options. I got the opportunity to take art as a high school credit in the eighth grade, so I took it. I wouldn’t say that was the best “artistic” year for me, but I got through it. Coming into high school as a freshman was a neat experience. That year I took art and I found it a little more challenging than it was in middle school, but I found out that no matter what it was, I could draw it. Mr. Valley, my art teacher caught on quickly to my drawing skills and he started to give me more challenging things to draw. Instead of taking it as a challenge, I took it as an opportunity to refine my drawing techniques and it made me a better artist. Throughout the rest of the year, he introduced the entire class to different mediums of art such as oil and chalk pastels, acrylic paints, and charcoal. I instantly fell in love with the chalk pastels and used them as my primary medium for most of my artwork. I wouldn’t say I was great at using the chalk pastels, but I was above many other students that would use the same medium. Freshman year is the year that I made my decision that I wanted to become an artist. This was just the beginning of my journey. Sophomore year, I must say, was way better than freshman year not only in art class but everything else was great too. In art class, Mr. Valley had lots of confidence and trust in me and I was able to do more in the art room. I had started on this big creative project and I never planned for it to be so big. The project took me all year long to finish and with Mr. Valley pushing me on it, giving up on it was no choice. Of course I had to use my favorite medium, pastel, on it. It was the last week before Christmas break and I was just frustrated because I thought it was good enough, but again Mr. Valley was right there telling me to keep going and to make it more “powerful”. I never quite understood what he meant by that, but through this project I figured out the meaning of what real “powerful” art looks like. Using many techniques and constantly layering colors on top of colors with a little bit of creativity and playing around with the pastels, is what made the finished product unique from everything else. It also made it my art that no one else on this world had ever created. Come the last week of my tenth grade year, I literally had nothing left to do, so Mr. Valley decided to let me enter a contest at the Lakeshore Mall. It was the “Design a barricade” contest and the winners would get a hundred dollars. Naturally I said yes to Mr. Valley and he told me to do the carousel in a pastel drawing. Only having a week to do something for a contest was very over whelming, but I put all the effort I could into it and come Friday, I had successfully finished. A week later, all the students that had entered went to the Lakeshore Mall for the reception. I was the last to arrive and right away they knew I had drew the carousel and one of the mall workers said that it was every one’s favorite artwork there. I was excited that they liked it so much because I only had a weeks worth of work on it. They gave me the one hundred dollars, and now the carousel I drew is displayed big at the mall and every time I pass by it, I get this big smile of satisfaction on my face because I can actually say that I drew that! The whole thing of being able to draw something in a week and having people appreciate it was just great overall and it’s an unforgettable experience. My current year as sadly, a second year sophomore, has had its ups and downs, but as always, Mr. Valley is always there to support me in any way he can. One morning he came to me asking if I wanted to be involved in the Governor’s Honors program which is the opportunity of going to Valdosta State University over the summer for a month and doing college level work in your field of interest. I had gladly accepted but sadly, I had to let go of it because the counselor said being a second year sophomore would not look good on my application for Governor’s Honors and it was best that I focus on school more. After hearing the bad news, I was feeling down just as anyone would be. I honestly thought that my grades would get in the way of me becoming an artist, so I was starting to have second thoughts about doing art when I grow up. However, opportunities come and go and Mr. Valley told me to go to the Quinlan Arts Center one afternoon because colleges were going to be present looking over many students’ artwork. I thought to myself, what do I have to lose, so I went and when I showed up, I felt left out. All the other students were white and had very presentable portfolios of their artwork. I was the only Hispanic there and all I had was three pieces of art. However, I still went around and showed what I had. Piedmont State along with Gainesville State showed interest in me and I gained interest in both schools as well. The Savannah College of Art and Design was also there and it’s the college which I wanted to get into. They showed no interest in me, but on the bright side, I found two other options. Lastly, there were two professional artists there also looking at the student’s artwork as well. Everyone had left and I was the only one left, I never thought that staying the extra hour would change my life. Roseta Santiago was one of the artists present and she became very fond of me and loved my artwork. One of my pieces of art happened to be my tenth grade pastel project. She liked the way I drew it and began talking to me about her life as an artist. After we got done conversing, she told me to become a member at Quinlan and other galleries so I can submit my artwork somewhere and begin to get noticed. After telling me that, she went back to the reception desk and came back and gave me the surprise of sponsoring me for a year so I can enter in the art exhibitions that they have annually. This was a big surprise for me and just as we were all leaving, she had one last gift for me, her book with all of her beginning works of art. I ended up leaving as giddy as a school girl, and speechless. A month later Roseta sent me a set of Rembrandt pastels so that I can begin doing my artwork at home, that set of pastels has got to be the best gift I’ve received because those pastels will be used for my future works of art. So far, this year I’ve been put down and brought back up, but I’ve still got a whole future ahead of me and hopefully, I’ll make to where I want to be.

So I could not even begin to say what they should be or in what direction to look. -I’m going to use the skills I mastered for the rest of the questions because those are the only ones I can view. The three skills I mastered were; sentence skills, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling, and the third was the craft of writing. These skills apply to my academic life because I have to apply all these skills in writing papers for classes. In order to write a quality paper, everything must be near perfect. Each quarter we are to write reports on what we feel we could improve on as a department, having quality writing skills so everything looks more professional and you are taken seriously. My future profession which is to be a high school teacher also requires these skills, if you expect your students to have good writing skills you should develop them yourself first. -I was very surprised by the results. I say this because all throughout high school, English and writing was my weak spot. I always had trouble putting my thoughts onto paper and use proper grammar. My spelling was also terrible but after graduating high school I picked up reading and I believe that helped me greatly increase my...

The skills that I have mastered and the skills I need to work on are greatly important in my academic life. I will have to apply these skills to papers that I will have to write and to the people I will have to communicate with through the forums. It is important I have these skill sets as I will have to make sure I am understood on what I am writing whether it is though discussions or responses. The skills that I have mastered and will be improving on will help me in my professional life. As of yet I have yet to determine what I will be majoring in, but I do know it will be in the healthcare field. If I was to choose to be a CNA or part of the administrative part of the field, I would have to be able to write clearly in a form that is acceptable. I was not surprised by the results. I have always struggled with sentence structures. Writing papers have always been my weak points that I have tried to improve on. ...At Lund International, our brands, and the products under them, are the focus of everything we do. And it shows. It shows in more than 150 product lines we offer, in the care and craft we put into every product we introduce, and in our tireless commitment to leadership and innovation (2008; Lund International). Lund International has chosen to branch their products Internationally with the main location being the country of Kava. Once we landed in Kava we realized this country was not as we had pictured it. Kava appeared to be a mess which could cause problems with branching Lund products. I arrived at the office to meet Alex who would be my boss and mentor but to my surprise the office was also a mess which now raised doubts about how successful this task would be. Alex was a one man show. There was no receptionist only Alex so it was clear that Alex and I would be a two man team, I guess you could say we were short staffed. As Alex was briefing me on the facts about Kava I realized there were numerous problems that would certainly cause problems for us. The population of Kava consisted of 50% of the individuals were under the age of 15 as well as several different languages including English, Spanish and French. Another fact was the economy being mostly petroleum, coffee, cocoa, spices, bananas, tourism, fishing and natural gas which proved there was not much competition in the truck accessory field. This normally would be a great thing but considering that over half...

Connect The Dots: A Short Story

...I look up from my ‘Connect the Dots’ book and watch my mother tenderly stroke Grandfather’s hand. “Keep fighting, I know you can do it. You’ll be out of here soon Papa.” She urges forcefully, as if firm words could liberate the man from whirring ventilators and thumping heart pumps. Grandfather didn’t stir, he never did now. As if the machinery that drew his blood out of his veins and forced it back into him had stolen something vital with its twisted cold plastic. A frustrated thud on the door tears my attention to the door. I tilt my head. ‘Was it Aunt Kate this time? Or was it Uncle Evan?’ Both were quick to anger and favoured kinaesthetic expression. Grandfather liked to exclaim that it was the fire in their blood; from Grandmama of...

Example Of Rhetorical Analysis Essay

...In paragraph 1, how does Jobs use the strategy of understatement to downplay the importance of what he is about to reveal? The way that Jobs uses understatement is because he makes it seem as if he was not an important person in the world or that his stories are little tales that won't make a difference in our lives. Reread the first story: what is the significance of this first anecdote? What lesson should the listener take away from it? This is significant because Jobs is talking about his beginnings how he was starting. The reader should learn that in the present he is making the dots and that in the present the dots do not add up but in the future the dots are going to add up and everything is going to make sense. What lesson(s) does...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Steve Jobs

...Steve Jobs demonstrates pathos primarily by building on different emotions that correspond with the audience. Pathos is persuading by appealing to the emotions of the listeners. A way to appeal to a group’s pathos is to connect using emotions in order to build bridges and assure them you understand their journey (Lunsford 33). Steve Jobs accomplishes this argument by recounting his failures, particularly how he founded Apple and built it for over ten years to a two billion company, only to be fired from his own company. Jobs’ firing was a public failure that left him devastated. Anybody can relate to failure, especially young college adults. However, Jobs contends that character is built in the face of adversity; "Getting fired from Apple...

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Steve's Speech

...Steve used many techniques in his speech to inspire and connect with the graduates at Stanford University. He used emotional appeals in all three of his stories. The emotional appeals connect to the graduates, because it creates a sense of sadness. He told the story of how he dropped out of college, how he was fired from a company that he created, and how he could’ve died from cancer. All of the stories combine to show how even if there are troubles in someone’s life, they can overcome it with hard work and become successful no matter what they went through. Emotional appeals connect to the audience, because the audience might have gone through a similar situation and it could motivate them to become more successful. Steve also used logos when he described how his company started in his garage and it became a $2 billion company. The logos helps connect to the students, because it lets them know that Steve was truly successful and that he started at the very bottom to get to where he is today and that the students could do the same as long as they work hard. The successfulness of Steve provided ethos, because he is an example of what it takes to become successful and that no matter what is negative experience happen, you can always overcome it. In life you cannot look forward and see what is going to happen, but in the future, you can look back and see how all of the dots connected to make you into who you are...

Steve Jobs: Rhtorical Analysis

...as they began to go into the “real world”. No matter where, why, or when a speech is given, in order for the speech to be good, it must use contextual and textual rhetorical analysis such as ethos, logos, pathos, and have proper structure and style. Structurally, Steve Jobs had an extremely well formed speech. Jobs related three stories he felt had taught him major life lessons which helped form who he has become today. These stories are related by him in chronological order of his life. His first story was about “connecting the dots”. He explained some of his struggles in regards to the successes of his early life and ended this first anecdote by saying, “Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something -- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever -- because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference.” Jobs’ second story is about “love and loss”. He shared about his love for his work and how work lead him to meet his wife, but Jobs went on to tell about losing his job and how the love he had for his work is what kept him going. He ends this narrative by saying, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe...

Steve Jobs

...Reflective Essay Everyone in life needs a few guidelines to follow. Motivation is one of these guidelines. I personally think it is necessary to life, just like the air we breathe and the water we drink. If we look at motivation a little closer, we can see that it is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. It is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. A couple of days ago a great man, who gave me a lot of motivation in life and a new vision to my future, died. Steve Jobs was a brilliant entrepreneur who had everyone’s eyes on him for the goals he achieved and the great success he accomplished. Getting to know this person will definitely add a benefit to everybody’s life. Steve was born on February 24th, 1955, to two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave him up for adoption. His parents’ only wish was for him to grow up and go to college. When he turned 17 he did go to college but soon he dropped out not knowing what he wanted to become in life. He stayed around for almost 18 months only taking the courses he thought were interesting and beneficial. Years later, he and his friend Steve Wozniak spent all their money on developing the computer into an all day used machine that is cheap and handy to everyone. Because Jobs liked what he did and because he had enough motivation, his workplace (the garage of his parents’ house) grew to a multibillion...
