Dana Gioia, the Author of this passage has a strong persuasion technique. I think his main factor was making you think about the future and the effects of literature on today’s youth. He explains towards the beginning that there has been a massive decline in interest for the arts, with literature and reading rates taking a big hit. I think that mentioning all of art and creativity and tying that decline in with the low reading and literature interests grabs the attention of the reader. He goes on to back this up saying that “The decline in reading has consequences that go beyond literature”.
