Introduction:
The Construction Industry Institute (CII) defines as
“The Optimum use of construction knowledge and experience in planning, engineering, procurement and field operations to achieve overall objectives.”
To further investigate the concept of constructability, it can be looked at as a measure of how easy could a certain project be constructed. It introduces integration between both the design and construction teams in order to have an end built product of lower costs, higher quality, shorter time and efficient design. Constructability principles could be applied to small, medium, and large scale projects. They have a significant effect on the overall project performance in terms of cost, time and quality. The purpose of constructability principles is to identify design errors, unclear design aspects, features that could be difficult to implement or very expensive.
Applying constructability to construction projects has proven many advantages to the construction industry. The value added of applying constructability to construction projects was the reason for the wide spread of constructability principles in many projects around the world. Listed below are some of the outcomes of constructability: 1) Reducing the overall project time:
The early identification of the design errors and conflicts reduces the number of RFIs during the construction. It also leads to fewer change orders which positively impact the over all project schedule

The study entailed a review of the literature in construction engineering and management as well as two of the leading academic journals in the discipline, particularly a bibliometric study of the contents of the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering (JME), as a case study of the CEM refereed journals. The JME’s contents were investigated from its onset in 1985 until 2002. The results of the analysis show that 70% of the published papers focused on four main subjects: management and organization of the firm, project management, industry structure and environment, and management of personnel. Considerable changes occurred within the subjects with the emergence of new topics and the decline of others over the eighteen years of publication. This paper presents an analysis of a two-part survey of local agency professionals in the transportation industry, regarding perceptions of UMS cost and time benefits and implications associated with implementation. The paper evaluates two hypotheses regarding local agencies’ perception on two key areas: (1) impact of UMS cost and time implementation requirements on implementation decisions; and (2) difference in cost and time benefits and implications for different types of local agencies. The study finds that despite its obvious potential benefits, UMSs are not being widely implemented at the local level because the cost to adopt them is perceived to be high.
