Contemporary Auditing Solutions to Case 1.7

...Answers to Questions 1. The substance-over-form principle states that the true economic nature of a transaction should determine how it is reported on a company’s accounting records, rather than its legal form (Donaldson, 1964). This concept aims to undercut certain transactions such as related party transactions that are solely to distort profitability, rather than a true economic transaction between two parties. The auditor is responsible for the review and testing of the client’s accounting records to see that the substance of their transactions are reflected in their records. If the substance-over-form concept is violated and the financial statements are materially misstated as a consequence, the auditor is required to issue an opinion on the client’s financial statements. 2. In accepting large, high-risk audit clients for relatively high audit fees, an audit firm may become overly dependent on this client and revenue stream. The loss of such a client may be so detrimental to the audit firm itself that the behavior of auditors may change completely. Auditors know the risk of losing this client, and may become more flexible during audit engagements. The only way to figure out if such prospective clients be avoided is to process each unique situation, and use professional judgment in deciding whether to take on a client or not. 3. This issues goes back to the substance-over-form concept. The audit should consider whether economic substance was used in accounting......

...Regulatory and Compliance Issues Paper •If auditing of financial statements is required primarily for the protection of public investors, should not all PCAOB members be taken from the investment community that uses audited financial statements? •What regulatory compliance requirements apply to various business situations? The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) is a private-sector, nonprofit corporation created by the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 to oversee the audits of public companies and other issuers in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, accurate and independent audit reports. Since 2010, the PCAOB also oversees the audits of broker-dealers, including compliance reports filed pursuant to federal securities laws, to promote investor protection. All PCAOB rules and standards must be approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Commentators occasionally suggest that the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board is mis-named. Some urge that the word “accounting” should be dropped from the Board’s name -- since the Board has jurisdiction over auditing, not over accounting principles. Others argue that the words “public company” don’t really belong, since the Board doesn’t oversee public companies. I have even heard it suggested that our largest impact will be on auditing standards, and that the word “standards” should be added in place of “public company......

...declarations and, therefore, too promptly acknowledge an auditee's perspective as a result of their commonality with or confide in the auditee. For instance, this threat may emerge when an auditor has an especially close or long-standing individual or expert association with an auditee. Bluebird limited is one of the firms audit clients and has been for 7 years and with me being the audit manager for 3 years; threats to auditor independence fabricate from this and inaccurate audit information in the report may be included. Intimidation threat, which may emerge from auditors being, or accepting that they are in effect, clearly or secretively pressured by auditees or by other invested individuals. Such a risk may emerge, for instance, if an auditing firm is undermined with substitution over a contradiction around an auditee's utilization of an accounting standard, or if an auditor accepts that an auditee's look of customer disappointment would harm his or her profession inside of the firm. The auditor has outstanding fees from bluebird which may seem an intimidation threat as the company holds power over these fees so this may affect the reliability of the auditors work. Finally; Advocacy risks - This happens when the audit firm, or an individual from the audit group, promotes, or may be seen to advance, an audit customer's position or assessment to the point where objectivity may be bargained. Generally Accepted Auditing Standards

...Generally Accepted Auditing Standards Paper ACC/491 Contemporary Auditing Santos Alarcon January 11, 2015 Describe the elements of GAAS? Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) are “sets of standards against which the quality of audits are performed and may be judged” (Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, 2014). According to AU Section 150, there are three general standards, three fieldwork standards, and four reporting standards. In the United States, these standards are developed by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board since the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002. The three general standards require the auditor to remain mentally independent in all matters related to the audit, to have technical training that is adequate and proficient to perform the audit, and to exercise professional care while performing the audit, and also while preparing the report. The three fieldwork standards require the auditor to properly plan the work and to supervise assistants, to sufficiently understand the company and its environment, and to obtain enough audit evidence to support a reasonable basis for an opinion regarding the financial statements under audit. The four standards of reporting require the auditor to state in his/her report whether the financial statements are presented in accordance with GAAP, they have to identify when GAAP principles have not been consistently observed, they have to include in the......
