Context of Invictus Victory lies in the hands of those who choose to succeed, people who fight their battles, go the extra mile, and persevere through the unfavorable circumstances. When faced with hardships, one may easily turn away and give up. Others however, will push through the hardships and gain strength from the experience. Life is full of such hardships, and it all depends on a choice - to push through or to give in. “Invictus” is a poem composed by William Ernest Henley in 1875. According to the Poetry Foundation, Henley was battling tubercular arthritis, which caused the amputation of one of his legs below the knee. While he was recovering, he wrote several poems including “Invictus”. The poem displays perseverance and determination in the face of hardship and pain. Although all the odds are …show more content…
Throughout his childhood, his family was mentally and physically abused by his father. When he was thirteen years old, his mother passed away due to cancer. He was then left to protect his siblings from his father’s agonizing abuse. Out of grief and sorrow, his father committed suicide on his mother’s birthday a month later. His aunt, a kind and loving woman, graciously took them in and raised them. My father lost his first wife to cancer, and his second wife neglected my brother mistreated my brother. She forced him to stand against a wall on his toes and whipped him every time his heels touched the ground, would not allow him to play, and several other cruelties. When he discovered what all she had done and divorced her, she lied and told the family that it was he who was mistreating my brother. This lie divided my father’s family; very few family members believed my father did not do it. When I was born, his family started to trust him again and soon realized how wrong they were to believe her. His life seemed to be getting better. However, a few years later, he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away

...the image of the format while at the same time keeping the idea of self- respect and most important, pride. Henley never subscribed to any organized religious belief at any point in his life, however. At the very least he sensed a power that controlled and manipulated the universe. While in the hospital he realized that it was only through his own inner power that he was able to overcome his overwhelmingly despairing circumstances. Henley developed a philosophy that the individual must lead an active life and never regret dreams that may have been turned into reality. The closest that Henley ever came to admitting to a greater power was in "Invictus" "I thank whatever gods there be." Though it mentions the possibility of gods, the poem lacks any hint of faith. The speaker is agnostic and very well may be an atheist. And so, Invictus serves as a testament to Henley's own personal philosophy, as it demonstrates the individual's own inner strength and indomitable free will as being his/her the only resource for survival. Ever since Henley was diagnosed with tuberculosis, his live change...

He is charged with two counts of violating the UCMJ, one related to loading onto his own unsecure computer a set of information and adding unauthorized software to a military network computer, and the other related to accessing and passing information onto someone not entitled to have it. I find the charge sheet particularly interesting for two reasons. What the government says that Manning did with the material he accessed, and an apparent discrepancy between the government’s depiction of the timing and Wired’s depiction of it. What the government knows about what Manning did with the information First, it describes the information he accessed differently as follows:   The video of the July 12, 2007 Apache killing of Reuters journalists (obtained via unauthorized access, loaded onto his unsecured computer, transmitted to someone unauthorized to receive it) The Rejkjavik State Department...

Motivating Empltee

...Staff surveys are usually very helpful in establishing whether staff in your company are motivated and therefore performing to best effect. Aside from the information that questionnaires reveal, the process of involving and consulting with staff is hugely beneficial and motivational in its own right, (see the 'Hawthorne Effect'). Whilst your survey will be unique to your company, your staff issues, your industry and culture, some useful generic guidelines apply to most situations. Although not exhaustive, the following ten points may help you cover the relevant subject areas and help towards establishing facts rather than making assumptions about motivation when designing your own questionnaires on employee motivation.   ten tips for questionnaires on employee motivation 1. What is the 'primary aim' of your company? Your employees may be more motivated if they understand the primary aim of your business. Ask questions to establish how clear they are about your company's principles, priorities and mission. 2. What obstacles stop employees performing to best effect? Questionnaires on employee motivation should include questions about what employees are tolerating in their work and home lives. The company can eliminate practices that zap motivation. 3. What really motivates your staff? It is often assumed that all people are motivated by the same things. Actually we are motivated by a whole range of factors. Include questions to elicit what really motivates...
