Case Study: Contingency Plans
Christine Grandfield This study is about an impending blizzard is set to hit the area with accumulations forecasted to bring 2-3 feet of snow and damaging winds during the next 12-18 hours. Nurses on the floor are looking to Gillian Scott for direction on how to proceed if and when staff begin calling out and creating staffing shortages due to the weather situation. Gillian continues to monitor the weather closely and stays in close contact with her nursing supervisor. It is better for everyone, staff and patients included, that a plan be put in place sooner rather than later. Since this is second shift, most executives have gone home. The hospital has an Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) in place that Gillian reviews, paying special attention to the weather emergency section. Gillian knows that if the weather predictions are correct, they will have to keep the staff that is currently working until other workers can arrive at the hospital safely. With this in mind, the challenges she will be facing are tired co-workers as well as a floor that is short staffed. Gillian’s supervisor decides it is best to come into the hospital while roads are still passible. It will be easier to implement a plan while onsite as well as be able to help as needed. As the supervisor travels into the hospital, she notices that the roads are getting harder to pass and the snow predictions are proving to be correct. When she gets to the hospital, she calls a meeting with Gillian to discuss the EOP and what the next steps will be. When working in a hospital, emergency situations will arise, especially if you are living in an area that is prone to snow or other natural disasters. As an employee, you will be expected to rise to the occasion when necessary. A hospital in Washington was faced with this same scenario. Several staff members...

...Contingency Plans G.S. is an experienced nurse on the medical/surgical floor at a community hospital. G.S. is the charge nurse for the floor and needs to make decisions regarding staffing in the morning. A blizzard with 2-3 feet of snow and damaging winds is forecasted within the next 12-18 hours. It is the charge nurses responsibility to make the decision on proper emergency protocol for safe patient handling. There should be a contingency plan in place in all hospitals to adhere to during a crisis situation. Comprehensive Emergency Management Plans (CEMP) is used in Florida for all hospitals for emergency and non-emergency situations. The CEMP is responsible for the government, private, volunteer and non-governmental organizations consisting of the State Emergency Response Team (SERT). It helps with a basic process for awareness, recovery, response, and mitigates activities of the SERT. The CEMP ensures that all levels of government are able to mobilize as a unified emergency organization to safeguard the well-being of the state’s residents and visitors (Florida Disaster, 2016). CEMP provides a framework which doesn’t depend on any particular individual or situation but adjustable to the situation. A disaster contingency plan is prepared in every organization to respond to an emergency and the impact it can have to the people. Having a contingency plan in place can save time and confusion during a crisis. A contingency plan takes the guessing out of the situation and...

The project team has assessed the benefits, costs, and risks of alternative contingency strategies and  have selected several plans that we recommend for each of the core risks. The project team has evaluated the probability and impact of each of the core risks, and prioritized them using a scoring method below. These two dimensions used to evaluate and determine the score and priority of the risk valued as Low=1, Medium=2, and High=3.     The five major risk that will adversely effect the project schedule, cost, and ultimately the success of the project are the event that the LapDock App software module is not completed on time. Second to that would be ensuring high compatibility with the various smartphones and their operating systems. Third is the maintaining the quality of the LapDock hardware manufactured by our oversees partners. The fourth risk event is the possibility that our components supplier goes out of business, or has problems delivering parts due to environmental or political factors. ...Contingency Theory of Leadership Bus 210 February 13, 2015 Charles May   Contingency Theory of Leadership Contingency Theory of Leadership Description of work envi-ronment The work environment I will describe is my last em-ployer. I was on the Project Management team for construction. Our goal was to build project timelines for builders and developers in a timely manner by following a timeline we provide depending on a number of variables. Our goal is to have the project complete by the time it was promised as well as provide great service. In the table below, categorize different leadership approaches that could be used in the work environment you have described. Provide different suggestions for each of the four approaches to leadership. Directive approach Supportive approach This approach is when a manager or leader gives his/her employees tasks and tells them exactly how to perform a task. I can see this approach being use-ful with departments such as Customer Service. This approach is usually seen in training classes. I feel this was an important part of me learning more about the company, how it operated, and how to navigate within the different systems. I have experienced this approach when I was first hired on to the company and was told what my responsibilities were as a Project Manager and how to navi-gate within our system. With the supportive approach, it is when a manager would give his/her subordi-nates the tools......

...B. Business Contingency Plan The Compass Park Hospital Network aims to maintain business operations in the case of a disaster. In order to maintain patient care in the face of an emergency situation we are seeking to plan for restoration of business services as quickly as possible and transfer operations to other facilities in our hospital system as needed. We have reviewed some possible emergency scenarios and developed a business contingency plan to encompass all aspects of disaster recovery, including clean up from the emergency, communication with the public and our associates, emergency medical care for anyone that needs it, restoration of normal patient care operations and temporary transfer of operations and procedures as necessary. The Compass Park Hospital network is a healthcare network comprised of five full service hospitals and numerous surgery centers and clinic. In addition to helathcare facilities they also operate patient transportation services (EMS vehicles and non-emergency patient transportation) and a home medical equipment supply company. Business Contingency Plan

...Aero BCP Implementation Plan It is important to develop an implementation plan to ensure a non-disruptive integration of the BCP Implementation  The stakeholders that are identified within the BCP plan must be made aware of its existence and must formally acknowledge that they will follow the plan to the best of their ability in order to limit damage to the company, its employees, its clients and its future growth. This recommendation is approached as a project, and is shared with all its stakeholders which includes but is not limited to, external customers, executive leaders, shareholders, managers and developers. All stakeholders with an action item from the BCP plan should be made aware of this action when the BCP is created as well as when the communication is sent out when the BCP is set in motion. Monitoring All actions set by the BCP should be closely monitored during the cleanup phase. All those who have an action item must report in regularly to managers and executives and multiple updates on progress should be sent to clients and the public. Transparency is great during this time because it lets stakeholders know progress as well as can help the company to get input on what still needs to be taken care of. Additionally, the BCP should have a project team manager itself, someone who can keep all actions in check and can update executives on progress. Adjustments  The data and recommendations in the BCP are well supported. However, often......

...certificates, vendor credits, and outstanding checks, such as payroll and dividend checks. Since unclaimed property claims do not constitute a tax, Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 5, "Accounting for Contingencies" (FAS 5)5 may affect an enterprise's financial reporting obligations. In FAS 5, the term "contingency" is defined as "an existing condition, situation, or set of circumstances involving uncertainty as to possible gain (hereinafter a 'gain contingency') or loss (hereinafter a 'loss contingency') to an enterprise that will ultimately be resolved when one or more future events occur or fail to occur. According to FAS 5, a contingent loss should be charged to income if information is available before issuance of the financial statements indicating by fiscal year-end that a loss probably has been incurred and that the amount of such loss can be reasonably estimated. If there is a reasonable possibility that the loss will be incurred, FAS 5 generally requires the disclosure in the footnotes of the financial statements to include a discussion of the nature of the loss and either the possible range of the loss (if it can be estimated) or a statement that such loss cannot be estimated. FAS 5 provides: "Disclosure is not required of a loss contingency involving an un-asserted claim or assessment when there has been no manifestation by a potential claimant of an awareness of a possible claim or assessment unless it is...

Contingency Plan Significance in Emergency Preparedness

...Contingency Plan Significance for Disaster Preparedness Tanya Vadnais Southern New Hampshire University Contingency Plan Significance for Disaster Preparedness We never know when disaster will strike in the healthcare profession, and therefore, disaster preparedness needs to be in the forefront of our minds. The most important part of disaster preparedness is planning in advance, and contingency plans are the most reliable way of accomplishing this. Contingency plans can be defined as “planning activities related to a site-specific threat that may occur at any time” (Vennema, 2007, p. 138). Different disaster planning and contingency plans will be needed depending on geographical location such as hurricanes in the southern region, earthquakes in the western region, and severe snow storms in the northern region. In the case study reviewed, a nurse who has just arrived for a 12 hours shift was concerned about the forecasted blizzard that was expected to bring two to three feet of snow in the next twelve to eighteen hours. Other nurses begin to get anxious and ask about contacting the nursing supervisor to seek strategies to ensure adequate staffing for patient care in the morning. Leadership within the healthcare facility should be cognoscente of the impending blizzard, and a contingency plan should be utilized to guarantee harm reduction during this internal/external disaster threat. Careful organization of contingency plans is necessary if those involved in a disaster......

Management

...1. Contingency means 'factors in the future that could happen but the chances of it are out of our control' and contingency planning means putting safe guards in place to make provisions for such occurrences.  The contingency factors that affect planning would mean that any planning that the company undertakes, need to take into occurrences that might result in needing to consult the contingency plan. Things to take into account when planning for change in a business are: * Organizational level, this shows the relationship between a manger’s level in the organization and the type of planning done. For this most, lower level Managers do operational planning while upper level managers do strategic planning. * Degree of environmental certainty - when uncertainty is high, plans should be specific, but flexible. Mangers must be prepared to change or amend plans as they are implemented * Length of future commitments says that plans should extend far enough to meet those commitments made when the plans were developed. Planning for too long or too short a time period is inefficient and in-effective. If you take all of these contingency factors into account when making any business decision, it is likely that there are some that will carry too much risk to go ahead with, meaning that contingency factors can greatly affect planning. 2. In an uncertain environment, managers should develop plans that are specific, but flexible. Although this may seem......
