The Core

...Hot on the heels of "Far from Heaven," which looked exactly like a 1957 melodrama, here is "The Core," which wants to be a 1957 science fiction movie. Its special effects are a little too good for that (not a lot), but the plot is out of something by Roger Corman, and you can't improve on dialogue like this: "The Earth's core has stopped spinning!" "How could that happen?" Yes, the Earth's core has stopped spinning, and in less than a year the Earth will lose its electromagnetic shield and we'll all be toast--fried by solar microwaves. To make that concept clear to a panel of U.S. military men, Professor Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) of the University of Chicago borrows a can of room freshener, sets the propellant alight with his Bic, and incinerates a peach. To watch Keyes and the generals contemplate that burnt peach is to witness a scene that cries out from its very vitals to be cut from the movie and made into ukulele picks. Such goofiness amuses me. I have such an unreasonable affection for this movie, indeed, that it is only by slapping myself alongside the head and drinking black coffee that I can restrain myself from recommending it. It is only a notch down from "Congo," "Anaconda," "Lara Croft, Tomb Raider" and other films which those with too little taste think they have too much taste to enjoy. To be sure, "The Core" starts out in an unsettling manner, with the crash-landing of the space shuttle. Considering that "Phone Booth," scheduled for release in......

The Core

...MOVIE SUMMARY The Core directed by John Amiel Geologist Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) and scientists Serge Leveque (Tchéky Karyo) and Conrad Zimsky (Stanley Tucci) become aware of an instability of Earth's magnetic field after a series of incidents across the globe. They determine that the Earth's molten core, which generates this field, has stopped rotating, and within a year the field will collapse exposing the planet's surface directly to devastating solar radiation. Backed by the U.S. Government, Keyes, Leveque, and Zimsky create a plan to bore down to the core and set off several nuclear explosions to restart the rotation. They gain help of rogue scientist Ed "Braz" Brazzelton (Delroy Lindo) who has devised a vessel made of "Unobtanium" that can withstand the heat and pressure within the Earth's crust and convert it to energy, as well as a laser-driven boring system that will allow them to quickly pass through the crust. Construction starts immediately on the Virgil, a multi-compartment vessel to be helmed bySpace Shuttle pilots Commander Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood) and Major Rebecca "Beck" Childs (Hilary Swank) who will join Keyes and the others. To prevent a worldwide panic, Keyes enlists computer hacker Theodore Donald "Rat" Finch (DJ Qualls) to scour the Internet and eliminate all traces of the pending disaster or their plan. Virgil is launched through the Marianas Trench from an offshore platform. The team accidentally drills through a gigantic......

Stick to the Core

...Stick to the Core—or Go for More? “Cut!” Spike Sanchez stomped toward the stage, his arms waving the music to a stop. Wearing black from head to toe, sporting dark glasses, and sweating under the heat of the lights, he was losing his patience. A highly respected music video director, Sanchez was starting to wonder if taking on this advertising gig was such a great idea. “How many times do I have to tell you to point the logo on the can toward the camera during that move?” On stage was Maygan M, a pop singer whose star had risen in the months since she’d agreed to do this ad. She was a sweet-faced, 18-year-old beauty, dressed in a sequined, midriff-baring halter top, a skintight leopard microskirt, and platform shoes that had already tripped her up twice. She sheltered her eyes from the lights and glared at Sanchez. “Like I can even see the stupid logo,” she whined. “Maybe you could fix it on a computer or something?” “Or maybe you should just do what I say,” Sanchez shot back. “Then we might have some hope of airing this 30-second spot before your 15 minutes of fame are up!” He turned abruptly, strode off the stage, and dropped back into his director’s chair. “Let’s try it again from the top.” Maygan pouted at him for a moment and then flipped her long hair, spun around, and went back to her starting position. Sitting next to Sanchez was Ian Rafferty, cofounder and head of creative services for Advaark, a New York–based advertising agency. “Pretty tough to work with,......

Core Competancy

...Core competency means that an individual or a company has a strong basis from which to gain additional ability to do so a specific job.it is a fundamental knowledge ability in a specific subject area or skill set.it is something that a firm can do well and it should provide consumer benefit and it is not easy for competitor to imitate though it provides competitive advantage. While cost savings is important to every company, it is no longer the only driving force in an outsourcing decision. Companies today need to take a broader view of outsourcing by isolating their core competencies, and then chipping away at all the functions that do not contribute to them. When a company starts evaluating their activities for outsourcing potential, any products or processes involved in the company’s core competencies should automatically be off-limits. These core competencies are the most important activities to the firm, so they need to stay inside the firm’s control. Rather than outsourcing these core competencies, a company would want to outsource the non-core, but still significant, functions to experts outside the firm. By doing so, skilled employees are freed up to focus on the core operations - the activities that add value to the product or service. Decision to form relationship: When the decision relates to using an external provider of product or service the question arises whether or not the provider’s service will be needed. If firm has the ability to have a core......

Ice Core Data

...Vostok Ice Core Date Analyses Introduction: Vostok is a Russian research station in the East Antarctic. Vostok sits on top of a Subglacial Lake underneath one of the thickest Ice Sheets measuring over 4 km. However, what makes this an ideal location for collect ice core samples is because the ice has remained undisturbed for the last interglacial and the penultimate glacial periods. Data: The Vostok dataset contains columns that give the depth (in meters) of the ice core, the "ice" and "gas" ages (in thousands of years ago), concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane found in the ice bubbles, the hydrogen isotopic ratios, and a column that provides information on dust. Analysis: The age of the ice is obtained by counting layers of ice that are deposited year after year that separate the warm and cold periods with the oldest on the bottom and the youngest on the top. The gas age is calculated assuming that the bubbles of gas can only be trapped effectively in layers of older ice, where the pores in the ice close, sealing the air at a depth well below the surface in a process is called sintering. That is why in figure 1. the gas age is below the ice age as a function of depth. Similarly the isotopic composition of water is indicative of the temperatures of the environment. During cold periods, the concentration of the heavy isotope of oxygen, (18O), relative to, (16O), is lower than during warm periods. The reason for this is that at lower temperature, the......

Tesco Core Competency

...CORE COMPETENCIES AND DISTINTIVE CAPABILITIES A core competency is a skill or expertise the organization has or anything that a firm can do well and use to gain a competitive advantage over it competitors. Hamel and Prahalad (1990) suggested that a core competency should meet the following three criteria. 1. Customers should benefit. 2. Competitors should find it difficult to imitate 3. The core competence can be transferred to many products and markets. One of Tesco’s core competencies is its customer focused strategy. The clubcard reward scheme allows Tesco to collect, analyze and understand their customers very well. Tesco uses the information and adapt their services to the local market, thus adding value to the customer experience. Tesco’s club card gave them a distinctive capability of observing customers preferences thus, enabling them to predict customers buying behaviour and arranging their stocks accordingly in stores giving them an edge over competitors. Tesco has also designed and implemented supply systems that effectively link existing shops with Tesco.com. While online shopping is a feature of its competitors, Tesco was able to design a good user interface which personalizes online shopping resulting in its customers valuing the Tesco.com experience highly. This has helped to improve the performance of the company in different markets. Further, the strong Tesco brand has led to an increase in the number of customers, sales and profits and has helped......

How Does the Development of Core Competencies Provide Both Advantages and Disadvantages for an Organisation?

...“How does the development of core competencies provide both advantages and disadvantages for an organisation? What steps can managers take to prevent core competencies becoming core rigidities?” In today’s world competition among firms becomes globalized and more intense. In order to become superiorly competitive, companies should enhance its competencies in a way that will allow them to achieve dominant position in a market. One way of accomplishing it is by development of core competencies. Competencies are considered core if they are skillfully performed and are principal to company’s strategy and its competiveness (Thompson et al, 2013). They are result of ‘collective learning’ activities (Prohalad and Hamel, 1990), a combination of unique skills, assets and routines (Teese, Pisano and Shuen, 1990), and knowledge sets, which altogether strategically differentiate company (Leonard-Barton, 1992) and by being valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable by nature they provide basis for sustainable competitive advantage (Hafeez, Zhang and Malak, 2002). To begin with, the development of core competencies provides numerous advantages for an organization. Prahalad and Hamel (1990) in their research ‘Core Competence of the Corporation’ argue that these benefits can be seen as the following: development of new core and diversified products and consequently potential ability to enter new markets. Scholars have also emphasized the importance of the effective competence......

Intel Core I3, I5 and I7 – How Do They Differ?

...The difference between Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 can be explained by their relative processing power, which means that Core i7 is better than i5 and i5 is better than i3. However, strictly speaking, the main differences between the three cores can be analyzed based on the number of cores, cache size and Hyper-Threading capability of the processors. The number of Cores The number of cores reflects the number of tasks that can be performed simultaneously by a CPU. The i3 processors have only two cores, while most of the i5 and i7 processors are quad cores. Therefore, based on the number of core, both i5 and i7 have a higher processing power compared to Core i3 processors. Cache size If a CPU finds it is using the same data over and over, it stores the same data in its cache, which is similar to RAM. According to Parkinson, both cache and RAM are used for holding frequently used data and without them a CPU would be forced to keep on reading from the hard disk, which is a time consuming task. RAM reduces interaction with the hard disk, while the cache reduces interaction with RAM. If a CPU has a large cache, it means more data can be processed quickly. According to Parkinson, all Core i3 processors have 3MB of cache; i5 processors have 6MB of cache while i7 processors have 8MB of cache, which explains why i7 performs better than i5 and i5 outperforms i3. Hyper-Threading According to Parkinson, D., only a single thread can be served with one core at any given time.......

The Core

...on the Core The Core is a film that is about the sudden stop of the Earth’s core that causes many sudden happenings like the birds suddenly start flying in all directions like they were blind and were going mad but because of that the geophysicists agree to drill down to the core and restart the rotation before all humans in the world would die. The scenarios are likely the scenarios in end of the world movies but in this movie the thing that make it the end of the world is the cores rotating that is stopped due to the government. As the geophysicists go down the Earth’s core using a laser that causes the ground to have an opening which they went through using a vehicle that could withstand the heat in the core. The special effect were truly amazing and like it is truly happening and as they went down the core and since I don’t know the real picture of core in this movie it gave me an idea of what the core really is. The sounds are good and the actor’s performance was good also. The wild behavior of the birds in London is caused because birds rely on the Earth’s magnetic poles to guide them in migration and in flight. Because of the core, the magnetic poles of the Earth is distorted or has disappeared making thousands of birds flying all-around without following any directions. And so, suddenly each one of them starts crashing towards statues, buildings, vehicles and other else. The ending wasn’t that exciting because it is like that they just bomb the core and......
