Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The world today is experiencing a rapid change in almost all fields of endeavor. Science has brought many changes in people’s lifestyle. It’s difficult if not impossible to live today and not experience the results of science investigations. Everyday occurrences such as hearing the weather forecast, watching television, talking on the telephone, and flying through the air are made possible through science. These are handiworks of scientists and proofs that science has become highly important in our lives and continue to change our lives and lead us to progress. Almost everybody, even scientists first learned their science in school. It is the best place to promote science and technology. In fact, science curriculum in high schools has been modified in quantity and quality to adapt to the changes in time. Efforts have continuously been exerted towards its revision and enrichment in order to attain the objectives of science education. The school is considered to be the child’s formal education institution. It aims for the total development of the child, cultivating not only his mind but his hand as well as his heart. In schools, science and technology has been brought as extension of universalization of education.

The sample consists of 102 males and 98 females in age range of 15 to 19 from five higher secondary schools of Lucknow city Uttar Pradesh (India).Socio economic status scale developed by R.L.Bharadwaj (2005) was used for data collection, while the total mark obtained by the students in the previous class i.e. standard X was used as an achievement criteria. Mean(M),Standard Deviation(S.D),Standard Error of the mean(S.E.M),t-test were used. This study shows that gender does not influence the achievement in science at higher secondary school (Standard -XI) level. Also the result of this study showed the difference between high and low socio-economic status groups. Twelve secondary schools were randomly selected from Egba and Ijebu divisions of the state. A sample of three hundred and sixty (360) students participated in the study. Three research instruments were used to collect data. There was no significant difference in study habit and selfconcept of students in public and private schools. However, private school students performed significantly better than their public school counterparts in integrated science (t = 3.400, p<0.05). In both public and private schools student study habit and self-concept combined together and singularly predicted science achievement.
