Additionally, she collected information on most of the pre-NCLB English language proficiency (ELP) tests and helped with Chapter 7 (Overview of Existing English Language Proficiency Tests) of this report. She also contacted many states to inquire about their English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessments policies and procedures and check the accuracy of the data collected for this project related to their states. Factors Contributing to Literacy Skills in Children from Low-Income Families

...are simply lazier students, and do not face additional difficulties with the acquisition of literacy skills. A comprehensive empirical study by Babuder et al (2014) explores the relationship between poverty and reading skills in children, with the results being unanimously negative. The study goes beyond assessing the reading skills of the children, and measures the basic phonological and semantic skills needed for reading comprehension. The results suggest that poor children exhibit major deficits in these areas, and furthermore that their parents will be of little help if they are uneducated and have poor reading skills. This information stresses the importance of effective teaching methods tailored to the challenges that low-income children face, especially when the parents are not capable of guiding their children through their development as readers. A national assessment of reading skills in fourth grade conducted by Donahue et al (2001) children further solidifies the link between poverty. According to the results of the study, sixty percent of children who qualify for reduced-price or free lunches score below the basic level of reading proficiency. There were also ethnic discrepancies in reading ability which closely followed socioeconomic trends – Black and Latino children exhibited the lowest reading scores of any ethnic group, with sixty three percent of Black children and fifty nine percent of Latino children scoring below the basic reading level. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of classical music (Mozart Sonata) on the reading comprehension performance of two groups of Iranian students in an English institute in Iran. To this end, the study compared two groups of Iranian English students (N=60) over a period of three months: one was taught reading comprehension with a music background and the other with no music background whatsoever. The results of the study showed a significant difference between the performance of the group exposed to music and the performance of the other group not exposed to music. Simple Random Sampling Method was used to select 3 Senior Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State where 120 students were randomly selected (40 students per school). Three research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A researcher- designed questionnaire and Achievement Test in Mathematic were the major instruments used in collecting the data which were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed that there is a significant relationship between student’s perception of students-teacher ratio and academic achievement in Mathematics.
