European Studies Writing Lab

Plagiarism, Referencing and APA Style European Studies and The Hague University of Applied Sciences have a strict policy towards plagiarism and insist that all students use APA Style referencing to prevent accidental plagiarism. APA Style is a set of rules for writing research reports and documenting sources in academic writing that was created by the American Psychological
Association to standardise practices in the social sciences. It is the standard for academic writing at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and includes a standard format for
Research Reports and for documenting information you use from sources.
Documenting Sources and Plagiarism
Plagiarism refers to using someone else’s ideas or words without giving them credit or passing someone else’s work off as your own. Most of the time, this happens by accident: a student borrows some information or text from a website and forgets to properly indicate what they’ve done. There are more extreme cases, in which students deliberately copy someone else’s work, in violation of the Code of Conduct at European Studies, which insists that “we are always honest with each other and with ourselves,”1 but thankfully, these cases are rare.
It is essential that, whenever you write something, you make sure that you clearly label anything you did not write yourself so that you never have to be accused of plagiarism. APA style gives you the tools to do this.
In-Text Referencing
Whenever you want to include ideas or text in an assignment that you did not think of yourself, you need to follow three simple steps:
1. Use a Signal Phrase
Writers must introduce borrowed words or ideas by using phrases like "According to" or "As
Smith said," in order to be clear about where the information came from.
2. Quote or Paraphrase
Once you have a signal phrase in place,

Judith Donath's Co-Op, Why Fake News Stories Thrives Online

...In Judith Donath’s co-op, Why Fake News Stories Thrives Online, the author highlights the reality of fake news and how the community builds upon it. There are two different type of fake news: satire and ones that deliberately mislead consumers. Unfortunately, the deliberate ones are more common and further divides the social circles that people belong to. Although we can “fact check” fake news, it is proven to be “ineffective” for those consumers “are suspicious of mainstream media and dismiss as partisan and deceptive any statistics or evidence that counter their beliefs.” Donath explains that because of partisanship, people “like and share news that conforms to their existing beliefs” regardless of the validity. This is why in the world that...

Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?

Women have faced consequences for what they believe is right and unfair! It takes a lot of strength and confidence to fight for equal pay because it is such a diverse and opinionated topic. After expressing her belief, Lawrence experienced bad and good press, which is another factor of the difficulty behind expressing her thoughts. Many individuals attacked that fact that she is already getting paid millions of dollars, why does she need more? That was not Lawrence's point, she doesn’t want the extra pay for herself, but the recognition of every woman worker that is getting different pay than...

Patterns of Evolution

...pressures of natural selection as other organisms? Why or why not? Yes, Humans are subject to the same pressures of natural selection like all other organisms. According to an article I was reading, the fact is that change in gene pool over time in all species is completely avoidable. Eyre-Walker and Keightley claimed that in 1999 that humans have had an average 4.2 amino acid altering mutations every generation since humans separated from the chimpanzees (physicpost.com, 2003). Provide an example of convergent and divergent evolution, adaptive radiation, and co-evolution. Adaptation radiation is an example of divergent evolution. Divergent evolution is the process of two or more related species becoming more dissimilar. An example of divergent evolution is; the red fox and kit fox, the red fox lives in forest and farm lands where its red color helps it blend in with surrounding trees. The kit fox lives in the plains and in the desert where their environment is sandy and their color help conceal them from prey and predators. The ears of the kit fox are larger from the red fox. The kit fox ears are an adaptation to its desert environment. The enlarged surface area of its ears help the fox get rid of excess body heat. The red fox and the kit fox have similarities that suggest that they had common ancestors. As they adapted to different environment and the appearance of the two species diverged (bioweb.cs.earlham.edu). Co-evolution is the joint change of two or more species...

Coeducational Sports: Why Separate Is Not Equal

...Coeducational (co-ed) sports are an effective way for boys and girls to learn, build confidence, and compete together. Some people are of the opinion that co-ed sports will not work because of the differences in build, height, weight, and so on between boys and girls, but I believe it is just the opposite. Some people say that co-ed sports are unethical because of the disparity in stature between boys and girls. However, if this is true, why do sports not have height and weight restrictions; if two boys, one of six foot two inches and one of five foot one inch, can contend together, why cannot a boy and girl of similar build and skill level? It would seem quite obvious they are capable of working together exceptionally. Despite that,...

Discussion Board 3 - Loving My Muslim Co-Worker

...much you know, until they know how much you care.” Now, as a Christian, to be able to build a relationship with a Muslim co-worker, many steps need to happen but I’d like to highlight three of them. First, I would find ways to connect with my co-worker outside of any religious topic. For me, finding other life interests have given me the opportunity to connect with people of other faiths, especially with Muslims. For example, food, sports, community events, or hobbies. It’s a great way to show the human side of a Christian, of which I believe we don’t do very well. Many times we place our faith in the forefront, making that the only bridge to connect with a person. This type of thinking is detrimental to all relationships. Second, we must seek opportunities to get involved in some way in the co-workers life. In other words, create memories outside of a work or religious setting. This step requires time, which is the best gift we can give to any person. For example, attending the mosque with your Muslim co-worker or an event with their faith community. This action may be a stretch for many of us as Christians and perhaps even controversial. But I believe nothing would speak louder for us to engage in that intimate setting of a Muslim co-workers life. Third, to build a relationship with the objective to present our beliefs, we must know why we are Christians. In several occasions, I have found myself in a conversation where a question is posed and I have no comprehensive...
