Crime Causation and Diversion Paper
In this paper will compare juvenile diversion and intervention programs operating in the state of Colorado and how they work to reduce crime. Included will be an analysis of the relationship between the premise of each program, their goals, and the major cause for juvenile delinquent behaviors. Each program will be identified as to what their major goals, core beliefs, and objectives are. The key participants of these programs will also be identified along with the types of services they provide to juveniles. Of the two programs provided will include my own explanation as to why one program may be more effective at reducing juvenile crime than the other.
In over the last two decades juvenile crimes have accounted for a large portion of criminal cases within the juvenile justice system. The most common crimes committed by juveniles usually involve theft, drug abuse, simple assault or disorderly conduct and account for nearly half of all juvenile arrests. Among these crimes theft has been found to be the leading cause for crimes committed by juveniles. Between 1980 and 1995 juveniles arrested for larceny theft grew from just over 1,400 to well over 1,600 per 100,000 people aged 10 to 17. Although this growth declined 52% by 2006; however by 2010 77% of all juvenile arrests were for larceny theft. Despite the recent growth of larceny theft among juveniles aged 10 to 17 juvenile arrests have remained low. However with these and other crimes being committed by juveniles, more children will continue to be lost to the juvenile justice system without the proper programs to guide them through their problematic behaviors.
The development of the Juvenile Diversion Program in 1976 served as an alternative to the prosecution of juveniles with

Crime Causation and Diversion Paper

...Crime Causation Diversion Paper Juvenile delinquent behavior in some form exists in the majority of the youth present in the world today. Why juveniles present such behavior is an ongoing topic of discussion for law enforcement officials and agencies. There are many programs geared toward helping juveniles to cope with their issues and receive the help and treatment needed to be successful in life. In the city of Petersburg, Virginia there is a Firesetters Program. This program addresses the problem of fires set by children. A Juvenile Firesetter is a child typically between the ages of 4 and 14 who exhibits an unusual interest or curiosity in fires, or a child with a history of fire play. This program also seeks to find the reason behind the setting of fires or what triggers the child to set fires. Some reasons could be the divorce of parents, frustration, anger, loneliness, a crisis at home, death, or issues or problems at school ( City of Petersburg, 2015). This program also meets with the parents and the child or children to conduct confidential sessions with the Public Educator or Fire Marshal. An interview is conducted to try to find out how long the problem has existed, the primary reason for it, and the dangers associated with it. An evaluation is done and follow up visits are scheduled for the child. Another diversion program in the state of Virginia is the Community Services Program. This program allows youth to work without pay in...

Crime Causation

...Crime Causation and Diversion CJA/374 May 5, 2014, 2014 Daryl Wolfgang Crime Causation and Diversion Determining the reasons juveniles commit crimes is a perplexing undertaking. Researchers have concluded “that no single cause accounts for all delinquency and that no single pathway leads to a life of crime,” however; there are risk factors (OJJDP, 2010). Risk factors include child abuse, lack of parental supervision or discipline, peer influences, and other environmental factors (OJJDP, 2010). Numerous prevention programs have been implemented by juvenile justice officials to educate children on the downfalls of criminal or delinquent behavior. Just as programs have been implemented to intervene once a child commits a crime, and aftercare programs have been implemented to deal with the aftermath. This paper will highlight two of those programs; Virginia’s Intensive Parole Program, and the D.A.R.E program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). Program Overviews The Intensive Parole Program (IPP) is used for chronic for high-risk juvenile offenders, serving sentences in either of two facilities (Beaumont and Hanover Juvenile Correctional Centers). The program is used to help juveniles learn coping skills prior to returning to the community to prevent them from reoffending, thus reducing juvenile crime. The juveniles are required to attend life skills classes while detained to teach them important tools...

...Crime Causation and Diversion Paper Juvenile Justice Systems and Processes Tina Sweeny/ University of Phoenix November 23, 2012 There are many programs available in the State of Wisconsin to help prevent juveniles stay on the right path of life, and deter them from a life of crime. For those who do not seem to care about their life or what happens to them and continue to get into trouble there are programs for that as well. This paper is going to talk about two different programs that are available in Wisconsin, one is a diversion program and the other is a prevention program which helps juveniles at all ages and various areas and stages in their lives. 180 Degrees Juvenile Diversion Program: The motto of this diversion program is “Even though you didn’t have a good start….you can still have a great finish”,(180 Juvenile Diversion,2012). This program focuses on changing the way juveniles think, and give them goals to focus on, and throughout the program give them the tools needed to achieve those goals. The age range is 14-20 year old males and females, who have committed a first time crime normally a misdemeanor, or a lower level felony. The program is designed to give a second chance by challenging them to take a close look at their life and the...

Policies

...Elsie Francois American Intercontinental University Unit 5 IP Theories of Crime Causation October 31, 2011 Abstract In this paper you will read about three policies that I chose and The Diversion Program. You will also read about the Prison rehabilitation program as well as confinement. The three policies that I chose to write about is: Diversion Programs (drug, court, etc.), the second policy that I picked is Prison Rehabilitation Programs and the last is the Death Penalty. The Diversion Program is a good thing. It was established in 1996 by Bynum and Thompson. This is very interesting because if you look at it one way it helps the court out by them taking care of the not so bad kids, without court but maybe the kids need a good scare, by putting them thru the courts. Regardless the Division Program is a good thing. In 1967 presidents’ commission on law enforcement and the administration of justice had alternative programs developed for juvenile offenders within local communities. The theories that would fit into this policy would be social disorganization theory, windows theory, and Differential association theory. On any given day, as far as arrest...

From those two intervention programs, there will be a discussion on how the programs work in reducing juvenile crime, and based on the analysis of the relationship between program premise and goals and one or more major causes of juvenile delinquent behavior. In another discussion, there will be explanations of what the two intervention programs major goals are, the programs objectives, and what the programs core beliefs are. The key participants that are involved in these programs will also be explained, as well as what services they provide for the youth. The last discussion will be identifying which one of the programs between the two is more effective at reducing juvenile crime and why. The two programs that I have chosen are the Father and Son prevention Program, and the YES (Youth Empowerment Solutions) prevention program. The Father and Son project is in Michigan and is a program designed for African American fathers and their sons ranging in age from 10-14 ("Michigan Youth Violence Prevention Center", 2015). The Father and Son prevention Program is aimed to heighten the parenting behaviors as well as reducing the risk of youth behaviors. With this program, it helps the father and son bond so that way in the future the son would not have self-esteem issues or...
