An Information System is an organizations framework for efficiency, productivity, and functionality. It “is a collection of hardware, software, data, people and procedures that are designed to generate and disseminate information and data that supports the activities of an organization” (International Graduate, 2011). Kudler Fine Foods is an organization specializing in providing domestic and imported sustenance to consumers. This paper clarifies an information system critical to their business process and examines how this system has an effect on the organization’s intricate structure. Information Systems

Information systems used by organizations often follow a “traditional hierarchical structure” (Turban & Volonino, 2010. p.42). The structure commonly consists of seven functional types (1) Personal and Productivity Systems, (2) Transaction Processing Systems, (3) Functional and Management Information Systems, (4) Enterprise Systems, (5) Inter-organizational Systems, (6) Global Systems, and (7) Special Systems. Each category plays an essential role in the overall function of an organization when utilized. The development of an application program is used to execute or support a specific organization task or business process through the use of that information system. Although system types and applications can be independent of each other, most systems and programs are often reliant on each other and are broken down into smaller systems called sub-systems. These systems are all connected by means of a network. A local area network (LAN) allows an organization’s information system to communicate with each other through wireless or hardwire connections. These connections are vital to all information systems especially, large organizations such as Kudler Fine Foods, to collect, process, store, analyze, and disseminate data and information throughout the organization.

Critical Systems

The transaction processing system (TPS) is an information system type used by organizations such as Kudler Fine Foods to “…capture and process data generated during an organization’s day-to-day activities” (Discovering Computers, 1999). This is a highly critical system because it governs not just one aspect of Kudler Fine Foods’ organizational structure, but contributes to the core operations of the company. Transaction processing systems provide support for other existing systems already used by the organization and open the door for other information technology (IT) systems that may need to be developed or acquired later as well. The management information system (MIS) is an excellent example of how critical TPS is to other IT systems. TPS is frequently attributed to the design of MIS and other evolved information systems.

Structure Effect

Kudler Fine Foods is a retail store specializing in the sale of domestic and imported food products. The company has three stores throughout the San Diego metropolitan area, making communication and business transactions essential to the company’s well being. Its entire operation depends on business transactions made either by the organization, employees, or consumers. For example, a business activity such as conducting inventory can be extremely time-consuming and represents a large aspect of Kudler Fine Foods’ Budget. Transaction processing systems can help eliminate non-generating income merchandise, maintain adequate inventory levels, and track sales. Other activities that prove TPS is critical to Kudler’s organization are deposits, payments, and ordering. All transactions of which require data to be captured and processed to generate a specific result through potential sub-systems.
Another example is how retail stores often use point-of-sale (POS) terminals, a probable sub system of TPS that uses registers or computers with specific applications to complete a needed task. Kudler Fine Foods uses POS terminals to “…check-out and record items, quantities, prices, taxes, and totals for all sales transactions” (Apollo Group, Inc, 2009) This in turn shows how TPS supports other information systems such as finance and accounting, sales and marketing, and operations. Most transaction processing systems today are online systems that increase speed and efficiency of activities. However, batch processing is still used for tasks not needing immediate consideration.

Conclusion

Information systems are not mere tools that can be omitted from an organizations business process without any negative impact. Information systems are essential to an organization and should always be considered as a beneficial improvement. Organizations like Kudler Fine Foods need to consider the critical basis that information systems provide to a growing business. Kudler Fine Foods’ transaction processing system clearly shows how critical it is to its overall existence. The structure of its information system is built to support every aspect of the organizations growth potential and future success. References

Critical Information Systems: Ups

...Critical Information Systems: UPS America The United Parcels Service (UPS) is a corporation specializing in the collection and delivery of packages around the world. What helped this private message and delivery service go from running errands and delivering packages of anything ranging from notes and baggage to trays of food on foot or bicycles for longer distances to routing packages and servicing areas in 200 nations worldwide? It was the company’s ability to adapt with the changing of times and information technology. In keeping up with the technology age UPS’s information systems helped take them to the top. Those systems are DIAD (Delivery Information Acquisition Device), COMPASS (Computerized Operations Monitoring, Planning and Scheduling System), and UPSnet. United Parcel Service was started in 1907 by James E. Casey. Originally the company was named American Messenger Company headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Jim and his partner, Claude Ryan, had one goal. That was to provide their customers with reliable, around the clock service at low-rates and the utmost respect and courtesy. Even today those principles are embedded deep in UPS and summed up in the company’s slogan: best service and lowest rates. Six years later the company began to receive stiff competition after the introduction of the automobile. The company soon acquired their first automobile and established the first consolidated delivery technique, which is the combing of packages addressed...

...Critical Information System Paper Ted Ko, BSA 310 University of Phoenix August 21, 2011 Greg Walker Critical Information System Kudler Fine Foods is a local gourmet grocery store located in San Diego, with three locations. All the stores carry the very best domestic and imported goods. Kathy Kudler, Owner of Kudler Fine Foods, opened the first of three stores in 1998. In the year 2000, Kathy opened a second store with the third store opening in 2003 (Kudler Virtual Organization, 2006). Kudler Fine Foods utilizes an information technology system that is vital to its business. The company uses the POS (Point of Sales) Database System to organize and keep track of items and orders. Without this, they would not be as successful as they are. Point of Sales System Databases keeps track of inventory, supplier, order, customer, store, tender (sales), tax table, order line, and item. A successful business cannot function accurately without all these tables. The Inventory Table contains the components that make up an item. Such as, perishable indicator, quantity on hand, and unit cost. It is also “used for managing inventory and determining the availability of ingredients that go into prepared items, such as bakery products, ect” (Kudler Virtual Organization, 2006). “The Supplier Table data concerning wholesalers, vendors and other suppliers from whom inventory is procured” (Kudler Virtual Organization, 2006). Information Systems Are Critical for Take-Off in the Airline Industry

...Case Study 1: QuickFlix 1. Will the video store die out, or will there still be a place for it in the world of Quickflix? Quickflix's long-term plan is to wean all its customers off discs. Quickflix bought Bigpond Movies' disc-only customers when Telstra abandoned its disc delivery service, so Quickflix will be keen to convert these Bigpond refugees to streaming customers as soon as possible. Quickflix will struggle to wean customers off DVD completely until the NBN reaches critical mass and makes streaming practical for everyone. Even then customers are unlikely to abandon discs until the streaming service offers the same range of movies as the disc service. Of course there's also the fact that the quality of streaming services falls short of discs. With Quickflix you can enjoy home delivered DVD and Blu-ray rentals and instant streaming of movies and hit TV shows to your internet-connected devices. No need to be stuck with long term agreements, set top boxes and hidden costs. 2. Will the video streaming part of Netflix eventually put the DVD part out of business? There’s a reason Netflix has held on to its DVD business for so long: It’s incredibly profitable. Forty-seven cents of every dollar Netflix customers spend on DVD subscription plans are pure profits. The contributing margin of streaming is far lower, largely due to the high costs of content licensing. That’s why Netflix has long used the money it has made from DVDs to build out its streaming...

The Information Systems

...Information systems collects, processes, stores, analyzes, and disseminate information for a specific purpose. A computer-based information system (CBIS) is an information system that uses computer technology to perform some or all of its intended tasks. Not all information systems are computerized, but these days most are. The information technology (IT) architecture and IT infrastructure provide the basis for all information systems in the organization. The components of information systems are as follows; hardware is a device such as a processor, monitor, keyboard, and printer which they accept data and information, process them and then display them. Next is software program or collection of programs that enables the hardware to process the information. Then the database is a collection of related files or tables containing data. Finally, a network is a connecting system (wireless or wireline) that allows different computers to share resources. Two organizational departments in a business are business intelligence (BI) systems and transaction processing system (TPS). Business intelligence (BI) systems provide computer-based support for complex, non-routine decisions, primarily for middle managers and knowledge workers. (They also support lower-level managers, though to a lesser extent.) These systems are used with a data warehouse and allow users to perform their own data analysis (Wiley-Rainer). A transaction processing system (TPS) supports the monitoring, collection...

...Evolution of Information Systems (Relevant to AAT Examination Paper 8: Principles of Auditing and Management Information Systems) David Chow FCCA, FCPA, CPA (Practising) This article discusses the evolution of information systems, levels of management decision-making and information systems that enhance the value of information. Students are encouraged to understand the reasons for the development of an information system and its replacement; these will help you identify the benefits and limitations of each type of information system. From EDP to MIS Until the 1960s, the role of most information systems was simple. They were mainly used for electronic data processing (EDP),purposes such as transactions processing, record-keeping and accounting. EDP is often defined as the use of computers in recording, classifying, manipulating, and summarizing data. It is also called transaction processing systems (TPS), automatic data processing, or information processing. Transaction processing systems – these process data resulting from business transactions, update operational databases, and produce business documents. Examples: sales and inventory processing and accounting systems. In the 1960s, another role was added to the use of computers: the processing of data into useful informative reports. The concept of management information systems (MIS) was born. This new role focused on developing business applications that provided managerial end users with predefined management reports that...
