Martin Fischer Access to Firearms is the Cause of Gun Violence in the Nation

Crime has increased tremendously in various places in the country due to people having access to firearms. Over the past ten years, thousands of people have been killed as a result of gun violence. In the first ten days into the new year, over 110 people were shot and 17 killed in the city of Chicago (WGN. 2016). Back in 2013, my best friend’s son was shot and killed by someone using a firearm, and the person had obtained the gun illegally. Also, 14-year-old India Martin was shot and killed by another minor as a result of her uncle supplying her with a gun that was legal, but the gun owner had reported stolen. With more people having access to firearms crimes are increasing rapidly. While watching the news this week, there were two separate incidents reported of individuals being shot and killed in their home due to gun violence. Besides people committing murders, they are robbing, raping, and attacking individuals using a firearm. Although individuals commit crimes using guns, people also commit suicide, and countless kids are accidently being killed or wounded by a gun. The way to stop the violence is by putting the guns down.
As gun crimes are increasing, we need to put a plan in action to decrease the number of individuals being able to obtain firearms legally or illegally. The communities should come together with their leaders and police to implement a plan to lower the gun violence. If an individual sees someone committing a gun crime, the person should be comfortable reporting it. By working together, this could be a start to help decrease gun crimes in their community. Stricter laws should be in place for gun owners. The owner needs to be

Moneyball

...Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis For Billy Fitzgerald I can still hear him shouting at me Lately in a wreck of a Californian ship, one of the passengers fastened a belt about him with two hundred pounds of gold in it, with which he was found afterwards at the bottom. Now, as he was sinking-had he the gold? or the gold him? —John Ruskin, Unto This Last Preface I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? For more than a decade the people who run professional baseball have argued that the game was ceasing to be an athletic competition and becoming a financial one. The gap between rich and poor in baseball was far greater than in any other professional sport, and widening rapidly. At the opening of the 2002 season, the richest team, the New York Yankees, had a payroll of $126 million while the two poorest teams, the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, had payrolls of less than a third of that, about $40 million. A decade before, the highest payroll...

Cakes and Ale

...I I HAVE noticed that when someone asks for you on the telephone and, finding you out, leaves a message begging you to call him up the moment you come in, and it’s important, the matter is more often important to him than to you. When it comes to making you a present or doing you a favour most people are able to hold their impatience within reasonable bounds. So when I got back to my lodgings with just enough time to have a drink, a cigarette, and to read my paper before dressing for dinner, and was told by Miss Fellows, my landlady, that Mr. Alroy Kear wished me to ring him up at once, I felt that I could safely ignore his request. “Is that the writer?” she asked me. “It is.” She gave the telephone a friendly glance. “Shall I get him?” “No, thank you.” “What shall I say if he rings again?” “Ask him to leave a message.” “Very good, sir.” She pursed her lips. She took the empty siphon, swept the room with a look to see that it was tidy, and went out. Miss Fellows was a great novel reader. I was sure that she had read all Roy’s books. Her disapproval of my casualness suggested that she had read them with admiration. When I got home again, I found a note in her bold, legible writing on the sideboard. Mr. Kear rang up twice. Can you lunch with him to-morrow? If not what day will suit you? I raised my eyebrows. I had not seen Roy for three months and then only for a few minutes at a party; he had been very friendly, he always was, and when we separated he had expressed...

You should have come to the cuckoo’s calling, Or when grapes are green in the cluster, Or, at least, when lithe swallows muster For their far off flying From summer dying. Why did you die when the lambs were cropping? You should have died at the apples’ dropping, When the grasshopper comes to trouble, And the wheat-fields are sodden stubble, And all winds go sighing For sweet things dying. Christina G.
