Course Description

This course focuses on developing the critical and creative thinking skills necessary to analyze and solve problems, make decisions, implement strategies, and formulate well-supported points of view on key academic, social, and professional issues. The principles of creative thinking are essential to critical thinking skills. Students will learn how to evaluate their ideas and how to communicate their points of view persuasively.

Please print a copy of this syllabus for handy reference.

I am available from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Central Time on most days, but I attempt to reserve Sunday for my family. On Saturdays, I tend to be online in the morning only. I provide you with these times to make it easier to communicate with me, and not to limit our contact.

Welcome to HUM/111, Critical and Creative Thinking. I will do everything I can to ensure the next 9 weeks will be a stimulating learning experience for all of us. If you ever have questions or need additional guidance, please feel free to contact me.
Where to Go to Class

Main: This is the main forum for the class and is where discussion is conducted. It has read-and-write access for everyone.

Chat-Room: This is a read-and-write access forum. It is designed as a place to discuss issues not related to the course content. This is the forum to which we will send our bios.

Course-Materials: This is a read-only forum, which means you can read messages here but cannot send any. This is where I will post the course syllabus and course related materials.

Individual Forum: You will see one forum with your name on it. This is a private forum, shared only by you and me, the facilitator. Your classmates will not have access to this forum. You can ask questions here. However, if you have general questions about instructions of assignments, please post those in the Main forum, since other students may benefit by that exchange as well.

University policies are subject to change. Be sure to read the policies at the beginning of each class. Policies may be slightly different depending on the modality in which you attend class. If you have recently changed modalities, read the policies governing your current class modality.

Participation Policy Clarification

Participation online is very important. As stated in the Policies link on the eCampus page, you are expected to participate 4 days a week in several different discussions and to contribute at least two substantive comments in the Main forum 4 of 7 days each week. This participation is a required part of your grade. Participation consists of notes you send above and beyond graded assignments, which generally means the messages you send as replies to messages from your classmates and me.

Please note that both quantity and quality are important considerations when it comes to participation. A message that says simply, "I agree," for example, would not constitute participation because it does not add anything of substance to the discussion.

In order to earn full participation points, you must add something of substance to the discussion 4 out of 7 days per week—adding something of substance would consist of new ideas, your perspectives, pointed follow-up questions, responses to discussion questions, and should be 75-100 words. You will find it is much easier to keep up with an online class if you are logging in and participating regularly. In addition, you must also respond to at least three discussion questions in order to earn full participation points.

Expectations for Discussion Question Responses

Discussion question responses should be at least 150 to 300 words. For discussion question responses in the Main forum, please post responses to the threads provided. To respond, highlight the appropriate thread, click on Reply, type your response, and post message. Please do not start a new thread for the weekly discussion questions in the Main forum.

Unlike your formal written assignments, I do not require that your discussion question responses adhere to specific formatting requirements. However, please make sure to proofread carefully. I will evaluate your grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

I expect your discussion question responses to reflect critical thought. Whenever possible, please try to relate the course content to real-world applications from your work experience. If your discussion questions do not meet the minimum word requirement or follow the aforementioned criteria, they will not count towards the participation grade.

Students are required to post responses to three (3) of the five (5) DQs provided by the facilitator during the week.

Disclaimer: Throughout the week, I will only mark the minimum required 8 posts for your participation. 3 DQs and 5 peer responses, regardless if you make over 8.
Grammar & punctuation

Students should remember that HUM/111 is a college level course. Therefore, everything submitted by the student should be grammatically and mechanically correct. I expect assignments, papers, discussion questions, participation posts, and emails to convey proper grammar and mechanics.

Assignment reminders will not be given in this class. It is your responsibility to manage your assignments and submit them on time. Please ensure you are checking behind yourself every time you submit an assignment. Be sure you have submitted the correct assignment and that the assignment contains the accepted file extension.

Late Assignments
Late assignments receive a 10% deduction for each day they are late if assignments are not posted by 11:59 p.m. M.S.T. on the day they are due. Assignments more than 4 days late will not be accepted. Extensions are not permitted in this course. Technological issues are not considered valid grounds for late assignment submission. The student is also responsible for submitting the correct assignment to the correct class. In the event of a University of Phoenix server outage, students should submit assignments to the instructor and when systems are restored, submit those assignments according to syllabus instructions. Unless an Incomplete grade has been granted, any assignments submitted after the last day of class will not be accepted. This includes the final exam. There is NO late period after the last day of class. Be sure you submit your final exam on time. Failure to submit your final exam on time may result in a failing grade for the course. There are no exceptions to this policy.

With an idea that is always developing it is important to understand what these mean, and how these work. Let us look at critical thinking first. Critical thinking's definition is: being able to apply knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in everyday problems (Athanassiou). Knowledge is to recall what is previously learned, comprehension shows awareness of material, the application uses data to answer questions, analysis breaks down material, synthesis recombines information from the analysis, and evaluation displays one's judgment of the value of information received (Athanassiou). This process should apply to many everyday situations. When you are dealing with children, it can be a very busy situation. It is best to know each child you deal with; everyone has different emotions.
