America is known for its ability to be innovative and for its educational value. Some may argue that America has lost its competitive edge when it comes to education and innovation. Some may say that the Chinese are now the leaders in innovation and education. The Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, collects test results from 65 countries for its rankings, which come out every three years. The latest results, from 2012, show that U.S. students ranked below average in math among the world's most-developed countries. They were close to average in science and reading (NPR, 2013). According to (Zakaria, 2011) in the 1970s, “California public schools were the envy of the world”. Currently, California public schools aren’t as great as they were in the 1970s. With the decline in the quality of teachers and curriculum California schools are suffering when it comes to national test scores and graduation rates. In addition, public schools across America suffer from low performing teachers and students. As stated by Zakaria, America has the shortest school days and school year in comparison to other countries. In other countries such as Finland and China longer school days and schools years have been proven to work in regards to the advancement of students. Also, with the requirement that all teachers have a master’s degree ensures that the students will have a high caliber teacher. Zakaria also stated that he believes that longer school days and a longer school year will help American students get back on road to success. I to believe that our students should have longer school day and school years; adopting the Asian model of learning is something that American public school should consider. In my opinion a lot of the foreign students have an advantage over American students, due to better qualified teachers, longer school days, and

Models Not Critics

...First Essay Discovery Draft “Young people need models not critics,” has got to be everything I’ve ever tried to explain to other adults in six simple words. I feel as though it’s in an adult’s nature to judge the younger generation in ways that no one would like to be judged. Although their assumptions could be true some assumptions are literally ridiculous. Some adults criticize our every move, some not as much as others, but for the ones who do there’s a pattern in their behavior. After they point out our flaws and mistakes, adults switch up and do the same thing they never told us to do. Now I completely understand when an adult wants us to do the right thing and not follow in their footsteps, but a lot of the younger generation goes with the slogan “seeing is believing.” In my own opinion talk is cheap, and I would rather see something actually happen in the case of critiquing. Fix yourself before you try and fix somebody else’s mistakes. Being the age that I am, I’m only speaking from the younger generation’s side. I may be wrong but my opinion on “Young people need models not critics” still holds. I do however slightly understand when adults want us to know right from wrong, and know to do the right thing. My problem with this is after or in some occasions before they preach to us about being the best we can be, they demonstrate the total opposite. Being part of the younger generation I’m not sure if I’m speaking for myself when I say we don’t need a how to. What we...

...Game Journal 6 The school of criticism that made the most sense to me was by far the biographical critique. In my opinion the vast majority of the other critiques read as though the author was simply trying to find examples for that particular type of critique where there was probably very little intentioned meaning behind it. Some of the meaning behind the game that was analyzed seemed as though it was forced. The biographical critique, however, analyzes the author’s intent behind the game using quotes from the author himself. This lends more authority to the critique and prevented it from feeling as though meaningless aspects of the game were being critiqued. In the biographical critique for Katamari Damacy the critic uses the author’s own words to describe how the author intended the game to affect his audience. This is information straight from the source and thus allows for the game to be looked at in a new light. The author intended the game’s peaceful, fun, game that is almost devoid of conflict to brighten the lives of everyone that played it and thus make the world better. The critic in a more thorough analysis could then have described whether the game is successful in doing that, and if so by how much. The biographical critique provided the author’s motivations behind making the game. This is a strong basis on which to critique the game. Analyze the author’s intent behind making the game along with how well the game imparts the author’s message. By doing this...

Critique Essay

...A Critique of “Learning from Legos” Joe Smith ENG 103 Dr. Kowalski A Critique of “Learning from Legos” Earlier this month, I read an article from the New York Times titled “Learning from Legos.” “Learning from Legos” was written by Thomas de Monchaux, and published on March 16, 2014. This article not only touched on a part of my childhood that is very dear to me, Legos, but it also raised several interesting points about the little interlocking plastic toys. By reading this article, I found that the author was skilled at description as well as supporting his opinion with facts that made sense. However, he padded his editorial with several paragraphs that not only cluttered his article, but also managed to take the focus away from the argument. Before going over someone’s work and critiquing, either to praise it or condemn it, it helps to have an idea on what the article was about. Thomas de Monchax starts the article with a little glimpse into his childhood. Thomas tells us that as a child, Thomas’ father enacted a strict no toy policy. However, this policy has one exception, Legos. Thomas goes on to give us a little background on the Danish-made construction toys, stating that interestingly the global sales revenue has nearly tripled between 2007 and 2012 despite the recession. More important than the sales statistics of Legos is Thomas de Monchax’s observation that the principal of Legos resonates deeply with the current maker culture. This observation is the backbone...

...INTRODUCTION The article “Another Malaysian Education Dilemma: Can We Trust Our Exam?” was published at The Edge Malaysia on Jan 07, 2014. It was written by the author, Nicholas Chan. He is a graduate from Universiti Sains Malaysia and he is a forensic scientist by education. Currently, Nicholas Chan is a socio-political research analyst at Penang Institute. He believes that there is truth in everything and it all depends on whether a person willing to see it or not. SUMMARY The author started the article by informing the reader about the current education status of the Malaysian students. The main points which were discussed in this article were about the examination and educational level in Malaysia. The author is disappointed with the education level in Malaysia. The author compared the education level with other countries too. Besides, the author mentioned about the removal of Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) which was announced recently, and replaced with school based assessment (PBS). The removal of PMR was caused by the difficulty in making sense of having students with excellent results, but still underperforming to international standards. The author made assumptions on the education level that the standard of Malaysia education is low. Lastly, the author gave suggestions on ways to overcome the inequality problem in education. The author concluded the article with hope. ANALYSIS Facts VS Opinion Author is using many facts data to support his opinion....

...PART I . INTRODUCTION The article Lean Times Call for a Lean work place was written by Pamela Golamco in the MercatorNet Newsletter dated 25 November 2008.Her articles are based on workplace situations. Pamela Golamco is a sales coordinator of a Lean workplace. She writes about her piece on the Lean syytem from her office in Sydney, Australia. In her article, she mentions that by being more systematic and organized while creating an efficient system at work could lead to a higher productivity and consequently creating satisfied customers as well as quality products. PART II. SUMMARY Most of us battle with a cluttered wardrobe and end up wearing the same outfit and hoping that it would not be noticed. Subsequently, we end up not keeping up with a resolution to be more orderly. In a similar manner, this lack of order is equally applicable to the workplace. Many times we let things go and allow chaos to ensue. This results in hours of productivity lost, non-standard and low quality products and services and eventually creating dissatisfied customers. Most companies ship these complaints off shore. Hence, a lot of time is spent solving problems at work rather than focusing on improvement. Domestic chaos has led to the new profession of decluttering and it has now become a basic principle of life for some people. This movement involves the elimination any unnecessary or wasted resources. The business world has now its own custom made solution to clogged and inefficient...

Methods Critique Essay

...Methods Critique Essay I chose two articles on the topic of intimate partner violence among Asian-Indian Americans. I found this topic interesting because I am currently reading the book Suburban Sahibs written by S. Mitra Kalita. This book is about three Asian Indian immigrant families and their passage from India to America. The intimate partner violence that is mentioned subtly in one of the chapters got my attention, because I am considering a career in Criminal Justice. I know that one of the current strategies to deal with domestic violence is to conduct timely surveys. I want to learn more about how domestic violence surveys are conducted. The first article, which is written by Mieko Yoshihama, Juliane Blazevski, and Deborah Bybee is a study that examines the relationships among Asian Indian partners and the potential risk of them facing familial violence. The study used the three components of enculturationon to examine behaviors, values, community participation, gender role attitudes, and attitudes among married respondents. The study surveyed selected Gujarati men and women aged 18-64 in Detroit, Michigan. The researchers analyzed responses from those who were married and cohabiting at the time of the interview, there were a total of 186 men and 187 women. Participants were examined through computer assisted interviews. The conductors of the study used ethnic surname base list, and with the help from a survey sampling company received census, telephone,...

Critique Essay (Technopoly)

...David Cadillon WRTG 391 Advanced Research Writing Critique Essay 20 October 2013 Now a day’s technology is such a common part of our lives no one really stops to question what it’s taking away from society, if anything. But in 1992 Neil Postman, an author of over 200 magazines and newspaper articles, wrote the book Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology to explain the many ways technology was taking over. In his book Technopoly, Postman makes an effort to paint a picture of “when, how, and why technology became a particularly dangerous enemy” (Postman xii). In his introduction, he gives a brief history lesson of Thamus and god Theuth who was the inventor of many things (Postman p. 3) to allow the reader to think carefully of how technology has affected society. He continues to share many anecdotal examples of how technology has taken over common human interaction, but gives no solid credible facts of how technology has become the enemy. With as many metaphorical examples that he uses, he doesn’t convince me, and I don’t agree society “seeks its authorization from technology…” (Postman 71). Postman makes it seem as if technology is the end all be all of our society, when in fact, it’s not. According to Postman, society allows technology power to influence or command their thoughts, opinions, or behaviors, basically, technology runs our lives and everything in it, but I don’t think we “seek authorization” from technology as much as we exploit...

Critique Essay on the Myth of Millennials

...A Critique Essay on “The Myth of the Millennials” The journal The Myth of Millennials written by Edward Koc (March, 2008) do not make the readers clear about the facts of millennial generation because the general analysis made by Koc are based by observing the attitudes and behaviour patterns developed at the time of childhood of this generation. In contrast Elam et al 2007 conducted a survey to understand the generational differences by learning online systems. The results showed that millennial generation believe in group activity are very close to their parents, techno-crate and believes in cool is smart. Whereas the findings of the study shows that Millennial generation are not interested in online courses and are more interested in connecting with people and becoming more social. The Critiques developed after reading this article are that Koc should have provided more real facts and statistics to the readers so that they can easily understand the fact of the article. Koc states that the millennial generation constitutes the new college students, who will play the critical role in shaping the US economy as this generation has a unique set of characteristics required in today’s job market. The evidences Koc has used to convince the readers about the Myth of Millennials are the surveys and isolated and uncommon cases which have failed in defining the characteristics of these generations. Koc has argued that previous generations were also passionate towards the work and looked...

Essay Magazine Critique

...Magazine critique Adbusters is a popular alternative magazine started in 1989 by self-proclaimed “cultural jammer” Kalle Lasn and Bill Schamlz. As the title suggests, Adbusters is dedicated to exposing and undermining mainstream capitalist culture. Their mission statement says,“We are a global network of culture jammers and creatives working to change the way information flows, the way corporations wield power, and the way meaning is produced in our society.” it’s consistently one of the most, interesting and relevant magazines that actually discusses something of substance. While the mainstream media delivers little but clichés that never question the political and economic status quo, most alternative media tends to respond to the former in a predictable and mostly uninteresting, unoriginal and superficial way. Adbusters is one of the few (save perhaps for more obscure extreme left and anarchist journals) magazines that attempt to question and demolish the very memes and beliefs upon which mainstream society rests. On the other hand, there are some fundamental contradictions in the very essence of what Adbusters supposedly stands for. We can start to examine the whole Adbusters dialectic by looking at the format and price. How, one might naturally ask, can a glossy magazine that sells for $10(online)claim to be leading the fight against global capitalism? The price alone makes it out of reach to all but privileged consumers (to use the leftist jargon proper to such discussions...

What Is Critical Junc

...3.2 God in the Critique of Pure Reason's Transcendental Dialectic 3.2.1 The Ens Realissimum The Transcendental Dialectic's “Ideal of Reason” contains the best known and most frequently anthologized components of Kant's philosophy of religion. In addition to its portrayal of the ens realissimum, one finds within it Kant's objections to the Ontological, Cosmological and Physico-theological (Design) arguments for God's existence. It is thus the text most central to the negative elements of Kant's philosophy of religion and is integral to the widely held view that Kant is deeply hostile to faith. The general aim of the Transcendental Dialectic is to expose reason's excesses, its drive to move beyond the limits of possible experience, and to bring all concepts into a systematic unity under an “unconditioned condition.” The Transcendental Dialectic begins with a critique of reason's illusions and errors within the sphere of Rational Psychology. It then moves on to a critique of cosmological metaphysics, and then to the “Ideal of Reason” where Kant turns to Rational Theology and its pursuit of religious knowledge. As Kant explains, underlying all the traditional proofs for God's existence is the concept of the ens realissimum, the most real being. Reason comes to the idea of this being through the principle that every individuated object is subject to the “principle of complete determination.” While the generality of concepts allow them to be less than fully determined (e.g...
