Critique of Research Studies – Part 1

Title – Backrest Angle and Cardiac Output Measurement in Critically Ill

Patients (Quantitative)

An effective title of a quantitative research article should include the dependent variables, the independent variables, and the population studied. Ideally, this should be accomplished in 15 words or less while attracting the reader to the research article (Polit & Beck, 2008). The article “Backrest Angle and Cardiac Output Measurement in Critically Ill Patients” by Guiliano, Scott, Brown, & Olson (2003), does include a dependent variable, independent variable, and the population being studied while generating interest from the reader. However, the title of the article does not include each dependent variable or all of the independent variables. Although the article has a fairly strong title, all of the above information should be listed to provide the reader with a clear sense of the research study.

Abstract

An abstract is a brief overview of the research article that may be in paragraph form or structured in to specific subheadings. The abstract should provide a clear summary of the main features of the research article including the background, objective, method, results, and conclusion (Polit & Beck, 2008). The abstract for the article by Guiliano et al. (2003) clearly states the background, objectives, method, results, and the conclusion which are separated into subheadings. The data within the subheadings is clear and concise making it easy for the reader to understand and determine if the study is of clinical significance. The abstract clarifies the independent variables, dependent variables, and the population studied making

With this regard, the current paper presents a critique of two research articles from both quantitative and qualitative viewpoints, to offer an in-depth examination of each stage of the research process, Quantitative article critique: Testing a Model of Post‐Stroke Exercise Behavior Title This article was authored by Shaughnessy, Resnick and Macko, and published in the Rehabilitation Nursing journal in 2006. The title of the research article is clear, accurate and unambiguous and also includes the authors’ information to qualify their creativity and integrity to publish the article. The title is of appropriate length, and identifies to the readers the purpose of the study. Besides, the researchers’ Shaughnessy, Resnick and Macko (2006) have high education qualifications, although the article lacks substantial information on their qualification for their degree of knowledge and experience to conduct such research. Abstract The abstract of the article offers a succinct overview of the study problem, to feature the high incidence of disability resulting from stroke among older Americans (Shaughnessy et al., 2006). In addition, the abstract incorporates the key elements...

Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, 21(4), 484-501. It is very important for people that have a brain injury to use memory strategies. This article conducts a research on what are some of the barriers that may be stopping people with brain injuries from using memory strategies. A qualitative analysis attempts to get a deeper understanding of a specific case, quantitative research tends to generalize (Newman 2011). So this article is qualitative because it is trying to understand why some people with head injuries hesitate to use memory strategies even though it has been proven to help people with head trauma, the article mentions it is an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis this means that it is a psychological qualitative research, this means it is research that tries to shed light on how a person in a given context, makes sense of a phenomenon (Nicholls, 2009). Critique of a Quantitative Research Study

...suggest that a strong question informs the research design, research method, the population, the intervention and the outcomes of interest. There are three factors for focusing questions 1. Facilitating the search for relevant evidence, 2. deciding whether the evidence is applicable to the group in question, and 3. sorting best evidence from weaker, less valid evidence (LoBiondo-Wood et al, 2002). The question was framed around the elements of PICO; standing for “patients,” “intervention,” “comparison,” and “outcome” (Boston University Medline Plus, 2000a; Craig & Smyth, 2002). The PICO approach was developed around Evidence-Based Medicine (Richardson & Wilson, 1997), and was therefore designed for clinical studies, it can though be adapted to any research context. | | |People, patients or population - who are you asking the question about? | |Intervention - what intervention are you interested in? | |Control or comparison - what are you comparing the intervention to? | |Outcome - what outcome are you interested in measuring? | Table 1: PICO criterion People or population of personal interest means the intended study subjects, for example, Post qualifying...

To better recognize and understand these barriers and to in hopes of providing a stronger evidence base for cultural change, researchers elicited nursing staff, recreational therapists, activity personnel and medical directors in a study titled “Its About Time: Use of Nonpharmacological Interventions in the Nursing Home.” Problem Statement Dementia is one of the most common diagnoses on the rise amongst the geriatric population. Alzheimer’s The most common form of dementia is Alzheimers, affecting well over 5 million people nationally. Institutionalization is common amongst this population as the disease begins to progress, typically bringing on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) including agitation, aggression and depression. This population is recognized as vulnerable and fragile, both mentally and physically. Many frequently have physical comorbidities along with dementia. This issue of suffering from comorbidities brings on the prescribing of multiple medications, which over time interact and accelerate their functional decline (Kolanowski, Fick, Frazer, Penrod, 2009). Domestic Violence: Factors Impacting Domestic Violence Research Study Critique

...Domestic Violence Research Study Critique student Ashford University PSY 325 instructor October 19, 2012 Domestic Violence: Factors Impacting Domestic Violence Research Study Critique A form of behavior that is used to obtain control and power over an individual is known as “Domestic Partner Violence” and somewhere around the world at this very moment, an individual is being abused. The perpetrator uses emotional and physical attacks, intimidation, and fear to gain control over their victim. Often victims will be left with bruises, cuts, and scars. The scars are not always physical, but those scars of mental, emotional, and spiritual, torture that often last a lifetime. Domestic Partner Violence affects individuals in a broad range of different backgrounds such as economic, racial, social, ethnic, and religious groups. Usually the perpetrator is not a stranger, but rather their husband, boyfriend, wife, girlfriend, mother or father. There is no discrimination as to the individuals relationship status, as to if they are married, divorced, separated, dating, or cohabitating, and includes all age groups of heterosexual or homosexual relationships. At the heart of a situation of domestic partner violence is one individual; man, woman, or child who is paying a heavy personal, social, spiritual, economic, and emotional cost. ...1 This document provides examples of student critiques prepared for individual assignment 1. I have selected examples of satisfactory and unsatisfactory critiques supplemented by some comments. Hopefully this will assist in preparing for the second individual assignment and the final exam. 1. Literature review (objectives and motives) Satisfactory critique Critique: Jones and Solomon (2010) do not explicitly mention the aim of their research, but rather refer to the nature of the research. This is not seen as a weak point as the authors make use of grounded theory in their study. The authors do however identify their motivation of conducting this research quite well by stating: “However, to our knowledge, there has been little research (...)” (pp. 21). Furthermore, the authors link their motives to prior research by stating that there has been a lack of interview-based work in prior research (Ball et al, 2000; Deegan et al, 2006; O’Dwyer and Owen, 2005). I do see this link as a strong point in contrast to the objective of this article. The objective of this article is not clearly formulated. The authors mention: “We address the fundamental question on (...)” (p.21). However, immediately afterwards they state: “In addition, we shed light on several important questions such as (...)” (p.21). These additions are not related to previously identified questions by the authors but to the themes that derived from the interviews in this study. Therefore, in my opinion this cannot be seen...
