Cross-Cultural Communication Matrix
Development of technology made the world smaller to everyone. We can see and talk in real time in the other side of the earth whenever we want. It used to easier for businesses and saves costs of travel, as well. A global business can have meeting with face to face on the screen and discuss matters. New technologies make easy to manage global business. For example, Smartsheet can reduce tons of emails from all over the country for executives by translation task on it (Citrano, 2007). However, if we do not aware and prepare of the incidents of misunderstanding for other cultures, the business could fall back. For example, from my findings, business with Koreans could be difficult if we do not have any idea what their real meaning behind of things. As a Korean, I did not like the way they express themselves. When they say, “No, don’t buy anything for me. I don’t need anything” does not mean they do not want any presents. They want it and want to see if you would keep on resisting to buy it for you. They have three times rule for manners. You refuse three times when someone offers you something, then you take it. From using technology, Korean business person might not fully explain his or her intent and could be misinterpreted. In many times, “yes” means “yes, I heard you” rather than I agree with you for Korean (Worldbusinessculture.com, 2013). Written email cannot be translated hundred percent to other language by technology without seeing personal expression on them. In many cases, French described as snobby but actually they love arts, intellectual discussions, physical touches, and they are emotional. Use of technology limits French to show their emotions and touchy feelings to the person of the other side of the screen. Thus, a strong good side of warmness fades off and highlights their snobby sides by formal manners and etiquettes.
