CrossFit was created and developed by Greg Glassman, a gymnast who wanted to improve his gymnastic skills and increase his strength more than just completing body weight workouts. He began incorporating weights in his workouts and noticed he began to surpass his competition. Using weights into his gymnastic workouts and integrating aerobic exercises like running and cycling Glassman developed the idea of a CrossFit training program. According to international athlete and Olympic coach Ross Edgley, “[CrossFit] was intended to improve 10 physical qualities… cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, coordination, balance, and accuracy” (Edgley, “CrossFit: Sports Science”). CrossFit trainers believe that CrossFit has several benefits including weight loss, increased muscle mass, improved coordination, and balanced and an improved sense of community amongst other CrossFit participants. Greg Glassman’s website CrossFit.com explains almost all the aspects of CrossFit. CrossFit.com consists of a brief history of CrossFit, how to get started and involved, workouts of the day (WODs), certification courses, exercise demos, and links to the CrossFit Games, and the Journal. On their website, the Glassman’s offer four different ways to learn more about and begin CrossFit training by joining a local gym run by a credentialed CrossFit instructor, checking CrossFit.com’s website for the workout for the day (WODs), and by expanding an individual’s knowledge of CrossFit by reading The CrossFit Journal (Glassman, CrossFit.com). CrossFit.com states that “there are more than 13,000 licensed CrossFit affiliates worldwide” creating an ease of accessibility to a gym and located on the website is a map of every CrossFit gym that has a licensed CrossFit trainer (Glassman, CrossFit.com). Each gym should offer classes as well as one on one training. To get involved by using CrossFit.com, the website includes a series of exercise videos and how to videos of each of the foundational movement as well as a day to day work out regiment. An individual can read the articles posted in the journals that range from training advice and testimonies from Cross Fitters of all ages, technical information, and how to design a CrossFit gym in all types of locations. Attending the certification courses will not only display the workout routine but will define the fundamental concepts of CrossFit, instruct how to correctly perform and teach each exercise and foundational movement, as well as educate how to apply CrossFit programs safely and effectively.
