Microsoft’s Partnership with Unhcr—Pro Bono Publico?

...this terrible humanitarian disaster. Microsoft is going to fulfill its corporate social responsibility, it organizes a group of professional technicians to provide technology software and hardware with which a refugees' registration system could be created and through collaboration with NGOs, with UNHCR and organizations that were taking care of the many displaced victims. Microsoft employees initiated a project that would become wide cross-sector collaboration. Loyal to its field of competence, Microsoft donated cash, software, technology assistance, and volunteers' working hours. As things stabilized, Microsoft began to partner with other companies assisted UNHCR in the overall project management pro-bono and provided pro bono time from employees to help roll out the technology in various refugee camps. In the same period, the counter-examples of CSR also alert public to pay attention to the fact that time and space were shrinking rapidly for international business and citizens: globalization had started to leave its marks, financial and business had globalized as well as risks. At the same time, the progressive development of partnerships, ISO and Social Accountability norms and the Triple Bottom Line concept had started to influence a generation of business leaders. It became increasingly clear that good citizenship would need to be closely connected to the corporate mission and not be an "add-on." At the very same time, Microsoft went through a revision of its own corporate...

The case illustrates an ideal example of a CSR programme and the importance of contributions made by business to society. In particular, it illustrates how a multinational company can take a responsible role in today's modern society without diverting from its core business strategy. ...08 Fall 08 Fall A LOOK INTO IMPROVING BING’S BRAND IMAGE USING CAUSE BRANDING STRATEGIES Sheri Quek (14333) LASALLE College of The Arts BADCN3C A LOOK INTO IMPROVING BING’S BRAND IMAGE USING CAUSE BRANDING STRATEGIES Sheri Quek (14333) LASALLE College of The Arts BADCN3C The birth of Bing was supposed to mark the advent of a new competitive era amongst search engines. Through its evolutionary stages, from the humble beginnings of MSN Search to the revamped Bing, Microsoft have been preparing for their default engine to generate a larger share search engine oligopoly – one in which Google holds an overwhelming power in. Ultimately, Bing failed because of a wide variety of reasons, most notable of which had to do with the brand loyalty and association people had with Google and the lack of trust as well as the negative image that Bing had generated through its head-on collision with Google in the ‘Bing It On’ campaign where they made constant comparisons to the search giant in an attempt to portray Google’s lack of proficiency; and the emergence of news about them copying Google’s search results (Singel, 2011). Brand loyalty is very much based on the establishment of trust consumers have for the particular brand (Sirchuk, 2012) and companies like Google target this aspect by aiming to become a “brand for life” (Oneto, 2013). They (Google) allowed consumers to see how the brand could play a part in every stage of a person’s life and this in particular is crucial especially...

Tests were conducted on a random sample of quality data that was collected to determine if it meets this requirement. After completing several types of analysis, both numerical and visual, it can be concluded that the data is not normally distributed. Thus, this dataset should not be used to construct control charts without taking steps to either find a method to normalize the data, if possible, or another method of quality assessment and monitoring should be used. Dell practices “Direct Business Model” that involves selling products directly to customers without intermediaries. Developed by founder and current CEO Michel Dell, this business strategy has proved to be highly effective in terms of gaining significant cost advantage in competition. Post navigation← PreviousNext → Dell Porter’s Five Forces Analysis Posted on September 1, 2015 by John Dudovskiy Porter’s Five Forces analytical framework developed by Michael Porter (1979)[1]represents five individual forces that shape the overall extent of competition in the industry. These forces are represented  below: Porter’s Five Forces Threat of new entrants to consumer electronics industry is not significant due to cost and financial, knowledge and technological barriers. However, it is important to note that new businesses may overcome these barriers if they are able to introduce new products to the market based on innovative concepts. Large players such as Dell, Apple, HP, Samsung and Acer derive extensive benefits from the economies of scale and this fact represents an additional entry barrier to the consumer electronics industry. Bargaining power of buyers is immense due to the abundancy of offer and little differentiation amongst products. Moreover, there are usually no additional costs for Dell customers to switch to the competition and the majority...

Our Social Responsibility

...Cynthia Sims Our Corporate Social Responsibility There is a law in the United States of Separation between church and state government, but some things should not be separate. We should all pull together to help make our environment healthy and the people in this environment healthy and financially stable. Many churches have been known throughout the years for promoting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by giving out a helping hand to those that are in need and speaking out of injustice. Now that the economy is in a terrible condition, companies and everyone have to promote CSR wherever they can. I am convinced that there is no need for traditional CSR where the main focus was only on the bottom line or company accountings. I believe that traditional CSR should be enhanced. Let’s look at how some companies promote CSR. Regarding promoting CSR, Ford (2012) reports that businesses in the Western country operate in a manner that benefits neighbors’ customers, staff and their environment with the concepts of CSR. He discussed two cases that have launched strategies in CSR. The first case is Panasonic. Panasonic is a Japanese company that promotes human rights and protection of the environment. This firm has a requirement that their suppliers must meet what they call a clean procurement policy and fair business embedding which calls for the supplier to supply safety and quality. The suppliers also must implement the Green procurement which is conserving the environment, and...

What Company Can Benefit from Shared Value and Why?

...For example I came across an article about how Starbucks, the worlds largest coffee company leveraged strategic CSR initiatives to gain competitive advantage to secure premium coffee from Etiopia and gain successful market access into India. Starbucks faced the risk of losing Starbucks Fair Trade coffee market share in the long-run. As a solution to this problem Starbucks developed partnerships to invest in coffee farmers in Ethiopia. As a result coffee yield from farmers increased due to the farming best practices they now could adopt, coffee quality increased and Starbucks developed long running relationships with these quality suppliers. In addition, the farmer’s standard of living also increased thus integrating business value and social progress. Secondly Starbucks when aiming to make a market entry in India adopted a India-specific CSR strategy to raise the domestic coffee industry to Starbucks standards and thus gain the government approval to enter the India market. Starbucks’s inital attempts to enter the Indian market had failed due to lack of political support, however with this startegic CSR startegy Starbucks was able to gain the local government support. It worked with Conservation International and the Coffee Board to raise coffee farmers to C.A.F.E. and Fair Trade standards and thus not only secured market entry but also secured local coffee supply thus reducing costs. It created a win-win situation as the farmers benefited as well and the initiatives raised their...
