Assignment 3: Cultural Activity Report

I was lucky to be chosen as a chaperone for my youngest son’s fourth grade field trip. The trip was on Friday May fifteenth and we spent three hours at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia PA after visiting the Liberty Bell. Out trip attendees consisted of one hundred ten year olds and twenty adults as guides and chaperones. We were transported from the school in four large buses which included a bathroom and DVD players to the children’s delight. It took us about forty five minutes to go from the school in Bethlehem to the museum in Philadelphia. Each chaperone was in charge of five children and upon entering the museum you are first greeted by a huge atrium in which a monstrous size Benjamin Franklin sits on a large chair. One of the first things noticed by the children as well as myself was the intricate decorations not only in the large atrium but also on the outside of the building before even entering the museum. I was at first very intimated and one of the children in my group upon entering the museum realized his water in his bag had spilled everywhere creating a large puddle that was now spilling onto the floor of the museum. The Franklin Institute is filled with several amazing interactive displays including the giant heart, your brain, and changing earth to name a few of our favorites. I personally had my eyes set on the third floor which housed the Genghis Khan display with over 200 artifacts from the 1300 century Mongolian empire. It is difficult to choose just two pieces because it was a very large and inspiring collection, most of which was only being displayed for the first time. I had originally planned to visit the National Museum of Art and History in Washington D.C., but I found myself in Los Angeles due to the birth of my Grandson. I attended the museum by myself. The Getty Museum was originally started in 1954 in J. Paul Getty’s home in Pacific Palisades. After Getty’s death, the Getty Trust took over the museum. The collection eventually outgrew the site and the Getty Center was built in the Santa Monica Mountains above interstate 405. After inputting the museum’s address I into my phone, Google Maps routed me through the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. The area seems very affluent as I passed several large homes with private gates. I followed the directions and eventually arrived at the Getty Center parking garage. There is a tram that runs from the parking garage to the museum. The tram was very clean and had a very modern feel. The tram ride is very scenic and the views of Los Angeles are incredible as you climb the mountain towards the museum. ...Cultural Activity Strayer University Humanities 112 Professor Renee Pistone December 7, 2014 Cultural activity has continued to be part be art of the human race since times in history. Due to a major role held by culture in shaping the society, various museums have been set up across the county for remembrance of various historical artifacts and other fine art works. In fulfillment of the assignment in this unit HUM 112, I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. The main aims of the visit are to identify the major artwork kept in the museum in addition to the influences of the intellectual, religious and socio-political forces on the arts. Moreover, it also recognizes the use of technology and information resources to research issues in the study of cultures. The visit involved recognition of the main artworks stored in the museum in addition to the selection of the two pieces of art that would be selected for being saved first in case of a fire outbreak. A visit to Metropolitan Museum of Art that houses more than two million artworks representing five thousand years of history carried out on 5th of December 2014 was used to aid in writing this report. I attended the museum alone so that I would be able to observe the exhibits quietly without being distracted. Regrettably, I have lived near Albany, Georgia for almost three years and had not visited any of its museums. Therefore, on this day I was eager and excited that I had a reason and purpose to attend. The Albany Civil Rights Institute captures the fight for civil rights not only in Albany but throughout the United States. Two artifacts that were intriguing to me were Shiloh Baptist Church, and Quilt Code Patterns. Shiloh Baptist church was founded in the late 1800s. The church has been memorialized and is a part of the Albany Civil Rights institute. The most intriguing information that I found out about Shiloh Baptist Church is that the “Freedom Walk” started there. The Freedom Walk or Freedom March took place during the Albany Movement where protesters marched from the church to City Hall with hopes of ending segregation. The footprints of the march have been memorialized in the concrete of the sidewalk for the trail that was walked. The museum was opened on January 16, 1936, which was during the great depression. I attended the museum with my Fiancé on September 5, 2015 and was the first time attending, for the both of us. It is currently open 365 days a year, and offers free admission other than to any of the special exhibits. Upon researching different museums and events to attend in the area, I decided that this museum would be most appropriate because it has a very extensive American art collection, housing items from the late 17th through the mid-20th century. It is currently hosting the exhibition Spotlight Loan: Eastman Johnson’s Views of Mount Vernon, which I found to be the highlight of my trip. In the text, I noted that there are numerous paintings by Eastman Johnson, an American painter, as well. One that particularly stood out to me was Negro Life in the South, 1959. The painting was of his father’s household slaves in Washington, DC. The slaves were portrayed as content, while playing music, dancing and conversing outside of their quarters. While some saw them as cheerful, abolitionists noted the crumbling architecture of the quarters in comparison to the house beside them, and also their tattered clothing (Sayre, 2015, p.967). There are many reasons on how human activities can lead to he imbalance of biochemical cycling. In reality anything that the can cause damage to our natural environment, change the imbalance, or that our natural environment is not familiar with can damage the balance. Cultural eutrophication and fish kills are mainly caused due to the lack of oxygen also known as anoxia. Although eutrophication is naturally occurring, it is a slow and inevitable process. Yet human when humans speed up that process by adding pollutants into our ecosystem, this will cause the death and premature aging of bodies of water due to the contamination with sewage, chemicals, and fertilizers. This will then cause the slow death of that body of water due to anoxia killing all living things within it. The comparison between opportunistic versus equilibrium populations are as follows: opportunistic species use the “r-strategy” and the equilibrium uses the “k-strategy”. In the Opportunistic species, the “r” defines the species instrinsic rate of increase.
