Attention Shoppers: Fruit and Vegetable Prices Are Rising

Grocery shoppers may be faced with changes in produce prices. California is a major producer in the nation’s fruit and vegetable market. The state grows 90% of the lettuce consumed, 94% broccoli, 88% strawberries, 97% plums, etc. Being a large producer for the entire nation requires a lot of assistance from Mother Nature. Unfortunately, California has been dealing with a 3 year long drought that will cause an increase in the prices of production of the fruit and veggie market. A drought is a period of dry weather, especially a long one that is injurious to crops.

The market for produce is projected to increase in the upcoming months. A few crops such as lettuce, avocados, and tomatoes could see significant increases. The price of lettuce could go to $2.44 per head, a 62 cent increase. The price for avocados could increase to $1.60 each, a 32 cent raise. And tomatoes could cost up to $2.84 per pound, increasing the price by 45 cents. The following price changes are a brief overview on how the market is going to change.

Consumers aren’t hurting as bad as the farmers. Having a job in agriculture in California is difficult to maintain. California could be faced with up to 800,000 acres of land abandoned due to the long standing drought. The vacant land is accumulating money that is being lost because there are no farmers on that land. Unfortunately, even if farmers can’t grow produce they can’t even raise livestock. The livestock requires an efficient amount of food, water, and vegetative available land. Unemployment is going rise regionally and nationally.

A premade salad package would only go up 13% in comparison to the 62 cent increase on a full head of lettuce. This luxury good will cause a stir in what consumers are willing to pay for all premade products.

Since the market is going to have

Price, Nir Goldman, Mark A. Sephton & Mark J. Burchell http://phys.org/news/2013-09-scientists-cosmic-factory-blocks-life.html In the article it states that when icy comets collide into a planet, amino acids are created. These are the building blocks of life and from the amino acids. This means that amino acids can be created anywhere in the world with these conditions. The article also states that a couple of moons of Saturn have the perfect environment for creating amino acids if a comet hits them. The researchers stated that the comets crash into the ground, which create shockwaves that create amino acids. The scientists figured this out by using a special gun that replicates the crash of a comet. This article is related to science/biology because it helps us understand how life first formed on Earth. I think this discovery will benefit everyone around the world equally because a common question usually asked is how the world was created in a scientific sense. Scientists will be very happy with this information because it would help them keep researching for ideas to satisfy peoples questions related to this topic. Sep. 15, 2013 — Scientists have discovered a 'cosmic factory' for producing the building blocks of life, amino acids, in research published today in the journal Nature Geoscience...

...August 11, 2014 ECO-202 Current Events: Monetary Policy Current Events: Monetary Policy Monetary Policy is the process in which the monetary authority of a country controls the supply of money. This targets the rate of interest for the purpose of economic growth and stability. I found an article on China loosening monetary conditions in the test of credit power. In this article it talks about how china loosened its monetary conditions at its fastest pace in the last two years. Chinas average loan growth rose from 67.1 points to 82.81 in the second quarter. In china the banks are worried about the inflation and financial risks and at the same time the government is worried about growth and employment. On August 9, the inflation showed that monetary growth was easing and will help trigger the gains in the economy. Chinas premier has been targeting certain measures to help agriculture, low income housing and small businesses. Currently the government is trying to help loosen the credit in order to get the economy to going and help the recovery. While the banks don’t want the support the expanding of credit and liquidity any further. The premier of China wants financing charges to be cut short so it will support the growth of the economy. In my opinion I agree with the Premier of China, if loosening credit will help the economy I feel that everyone would need to get on the same page. I understand where the banks are coming from, I see that they are worried about offering...

...Tobenna E. Okoro II @02642435 12-2-13 Current Events Paper One of the most controversial topics in the news today, would be the suspension, extended suspension, and eventual reinstatement of the once three time pro bowl running back for the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Rice. Rice was initially suspended for 2 games after video surfaced of him dragging his unconscious fiancé out of a casino elevator. They both had been drinking and after a heated dispute, it was clear an altercation had occurred. The events that occurred in the elevator were initially ambiguous and no charges were immediately filed. Ray Rice and his wife were allowed to go home and after months of arbitration, damage control and lobbying to the commissioner, rice was able to walk away with merely a two-game suspension. The media backlash was immense; the NFL had never seen more scrutiny. The public was simply outraged by the “slap on the wrist ” approach the NFL had taken on its stars. Several fans traded in their Ray Rice jerseys for refunds or other players in a nationwide program hosted by the NFL. This was an issue as serious as domestic violence and the light suspension indicated the lack of seriousness the NFL was giving it. What made the situation worse was that prior to the start of the season the NFL had suspended wide receiver Joshua Gordon for the entire season for Marijuana abuse, which is now legalized in several states and decriminalized in others. Things took a turn for the worse when the...

DBB Singapore is also using a type of crowdsourcing. The Breast Cancer Foundation has hired DBB Singapore as their advertising agency to deliver their new design for awareness against breast cancer. Since October is the month for breast cancer awareness, DBB Singapore thought it would be a good idea to try something new. Most websites usually have the Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram logo/link somewhere on their main page in a corner. DBB Singapore came up with creative idea to use these links and redesign them to spread awareness. The design would include Facebook and Twitter’s logo as cupped hands and Instagram’s logo as a breast. The cupped hands indicate one performing a breast exam on themselves. The way DBB Singapore is using crowdsourcing is by having people vote on the redesign of these three logos. If enough votes were casted, then the major media giants would redesign their logos temporarily. Crowdsourcing I believe is a good way to gain appeal and attention through having consumers involved in a new product idea. When consumers feel involved, the campaign becomes more personal to them. This triggers their leverage point because it taps into their value system. I think DBB Singapore came up with a brilliant idea. The new redesigned logos would be presented alongside with a tagline that says “if only...

West Texas is a prime example of a Texas area that is definitely affected by poor water quality. New technologies will soon help to solve this issue for a better future for its residents. Since my background was basically management, the industry was different. It was apparent that there was a need to thoroughly research the entertainment industry as well as the ins and outs of building a business. The research process begins with the gathering of information and analyzing the information to define the how, what, when, and where. I began with researching the entertainment field and how management related to the field. I also research management duties, responsibility, rights and the laws governed the management side of the entertainment field. Once I collected the information that pertained to management, I had to make the decision if this was the appropriate personal choice. Upon deciding that it was an appropriate choice and achievable goal, here is my challenge began. The next step was now to take the same steps that were take with research the industry and apply them to building a business. Once the information was collected and analyzed, a plan was developed and set into motion. A timeline and was are constructed and then the work began. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication in order to start or build a business. I have found that a lot of people do not properly research their businesses, job, or projects. The main objection...

...Football players more likely to develop neurodegenerative disease, study finds By Nadia Kounang, CNN updated 4:38 PM EDT, Wed September 5, 2012 [pic] (CNN) -- Just hours before the 2012 NFL season kicks off, a new study suggests that professional football players are three times more likely to have neurodegenerative diseases than the general population. When researchers specifically looked at Alzheimer's disease and ALS -- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease -- that risk increased to four times greater than the rest of us. The study, published Wednesday in the medical journal Neurology, surveyed nearly 3,500 retired NFL players who were in the league between 1959 and 1988. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a division of the Centers for Disease Control, had been following this group of players since the early '90s, when the NFL asked the institute to evaluate them for their risk of cardiovascular disease. This time, the authors decided to look at the neurological outcomes of the players by specifically evaluating the autopsies of 334 players. "We looked at all the death certificates, and Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and ALS had significant contribution to the death," according to study co-author Elliot Lehman. When tallying those specific diseases, the authors found that among the 334 players, seven had died from Alzheimer's and another seven with ALS. Three players had died with Parkinson's disease, but the authors...

Freedom of speech can be exercised in many ways, but the choice of using it against our country should not be tolerated. Kneeling during the National Anthem is a form of disrespect and betrayal towards our country. Recently, NFL players have kneeled during the National Anthem to exercise their right of freedom of speech. This act of disagreement has caused dispute over the...

Maese Dan Berliner Global Politics 14 March 2016 Current Events Report Wednesday, January 6, 2016, North Korea made an announcement that their hydrogen bomb testing was successful, resulting in “raised cries of indignation from the international community”. In the past the U.N had implemented sanctions against North Korea for continuing their development in nuclear weapons in 2006, 2009, 2013. Yet despite this, on Monday March 14, 2016, DPRK Today reported that a fifth test would be run and a new test involving ballistic missiles would also be included. Mr. Jongun had explained that the reason his country is now involving ballistic missiles is “. . . [so that] the warheads [are able] to survive heat and turbulence while plunging through the atmosphere toward its target, to further enhance the reliance of nuclear attack capability”. It is no secret that North Korea’s leader has had it out for the U.S, but what is the actual reason for creating nuclear weapons? In my opinion, national interest is at play but not because Kim Jongun wants his country to be recognized as a nuclear power as he has mentioned previously. North Korea’s, current leader consolidated authority at the assumed age of 27 in 2011, after his father’s death in December; he is the youngest of his three siblings. Since he has come into power he has ruled just as brutally as his father, killing plenty of his senior officials. One could say that given his “early” age he would need to prove...

...Amari Pipkins-Walker Fraga May 19, 2015 Current Events This article is about South Koreans trying to reunite with North Korea. Thousands of Buddhists pray for peace between the two countries because so much violence has happened since the split. The spiritual leaders of the Buddhists wants to really target Kim Jong Un and the other people who has Buddhism rooted into their hearts. The plan is to use a peaceful routine to soften up Kim Jong Un and also to keep peace between North Korea and the U.S. So the plan is to use the method is to use the non-violence strategy. What I think about this is that I think this might work because other people or one person has tried the non-violence method and has had multiple results either positive or negative. If the results were negative, I think that would help because they can learn from the reaction and use another way to use a peaceful method to reunite with North Korea. If the results is positive then the South Koreans can feel like they have made some progress of finally reuniting with North Korea. Why this affects me is because I really wouldn’t mind the two countries finally getting back together like before. Also, there are a lot of people that I know who are going to visit South Korea, so it would be a god idea for them to be able to experience both countries as one. Also the whole world would probably be happy that the feud between the two countries is over....

...Current Event Report 2 – Shreyas Pradhan There is a new research, which proves that handshakes might have a different reason for its existence: transmission of chemical signals. The study was conducted in Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science and it found that handshake is a way for people to sniff molecules. 280 people were used in this experiment – they were greeted either with a handshake or without one. The experiment also required use of hidden cameras which were used to see how many times people touched their respective faces after shaking someone’s hand. People who were greeted with a handshake had a significantly higher rate of touching their face with their right hand, however this was limited to when they shook hands with a person from the same sex. Additionally, the experiment required the subjects to have nasal catheters so that airflow could be measured. With the use of this technology, they concluded that the subjects were generally sniffing when they touched their face with their right hand. The research argues that the handshake has evolved from being a conscious effort to sample and sniff chemicals to an unconscious effort to sample and sniff chemicals, however, with a social meaning. I believe that this is a truly amazing discovery. In layman terms, one cannot even think for other reasons for the existence of the handshake. However, this discovery proves otherwise. It is weird thinking about it though – we unconsciously smell other people’s chemicals. It seems...
