Current Account

...Q1: Define the current account balance fully and explain what it is made up. Specifically, you should show the relationship between the current account and the trade account. A: Current account balance is the difference between a country’s savings (imports) and investments (exports). If it is positive, the country had enough funds to invest abroad; however, if it is negative the domestic investments of the company were financed by foreign investors. Whereas trade account It is defined as the sum of the balance of goods and services exported, net income from abroad, minus the sum of goods and services imported which is included in the current account Current Account = Changes in net foreign assets Q2: What is the sovereign debt and which countries within the EZ are suffering from it? A: Sovereign debt is bonds, securities, or bills issued by a national government (in domestic or foreign currency) to finance the country’s growth. Theoretically sovereign doubts are considered to be low on risks, since the government has different measures to guarantee returns, e.g. increased taxes or print money. Though practically, a number of governments in the past could not repay their debt , and defaulted. The riskier, the investment, the higher the returns. Countries within the EZ suffering from sovereign debt are: 1) Greece 2) Ireland 3) Italy 4) Portugal 5) Spain Q3: What is the external imbalance refer to,......

Current Account Deficits

...1.Read the article Asset Price Booms and Current Account Deficits. Explain the basic premise of the article and describe the impact of the real estate and financial asset prices on the U.S. current account deficit. The U.S. stock market experienced pronounced growth preceding the crisis which hit its peak in 2008. This growth coincided with reduced rates of savings (even a negative savings rate at times) as assets were valued highly and used as collateral for additional debt taken on by consumers to purchase additional goods. Those private investors leveraged heavily in the market and feeling perhaps ‘overly’ confident because of the impressive growth and also the rising value of their real estate, were especially vulnerable when the recession hit. Institutional investors such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were induced by the government to issue loans to lesser qualified applicants. This created a massive asset price bubble which culminated in the economic crisis. This recession coincided with jobs losses, sharp declines in real estate values to the point where mortgages went ‘underwater’ (meaning that the value of the real estate was to a certain extent less than remaining amount owed for the property), and a sharp contraction on Wall Street. Paul Bergin, UC-Davis professor and visiting scholar in the Economic Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, states that “Rising asset values in the United States permitted households to borrow more......

Electric Current Homework

...7. What variables affect the resistance in the wire? The length, diameter, and the number of particles in the system affect the resistance of the wire greatly. 8. What must happen for the wire’s resistance to be at its greatest? For the wire’s resistance to be at its greatest, the amount of particles and length of the system must be at its greatest. Also, the area of the system must be at its smallest. 9. What must happen for the wire’s resistance to be at its least? For the wire’s resistance to be at its least the area of the system must be the largest and the number of particles and length must be at its lowest. 10. Write a summary about the different relationships you looked at in the properties and measurements of a resistor. The relationships that I looked at were the relationships of the area of the system with the length of the system and the number of particles in the system. I found that when more particles were in the system, the resistance would be the highest when the area was the lowest. I also learned that when there were fewer particles in the system, the resistance would be at its lowest when the area was the largest. The length always matched with the number of particles, meaning that when the particles were at its highest, the length had to be at its highest to get the most resistance. And when the particles were at its lowest, the length had to be at its lowest to get the least resistance. I learned in...

Critique: Compensation and R&R Current Issues and Proposed Reform

...| Compensation and R&R: Current Issues and Proposed Reform | A Critique | Manish Gupta Roll No 13 | Current Issues and Proposed Reform The current Resettlement & Rehabilitation policy has set a very high threshold of 500 families or more together in plains and 250 families together in hills, Desert Development Programme (DDP) blocks, and the areas which have been mentioned in Schedule V and Schedule VI of the Constitution of India. This high threshold fails to capture the cases in which the family number is not as high as 500 in plains or 250 in cases of hills. This high threshold totally defeats the purpose of the Resettlement & Rehabilitation policy as it will still cause the families to be traumatized due to loss of land and in most of the cases, means of the livelihood and social status of the families. In Indian society, the families having land have always enjoyed a higher social status than the ones having less or no land at all. Displacement from the land also may result in the families losing the same society of people in which they have been living in prior to land acquisition. The Resettlement & Rehabilitation policy also failed to put stress on an option that causes non-displacement or minimum displacement for the execution of the project for which the land has been acquired from the landowners. The Resettlement & Rehabilitation policy also did not make any provision for prior assent of the affected people before forced......

Usa Current Account Deficit

...| US & the pertaining issue of Current Account Deficit: As mentioned in the given case, “A country with good investment prospects, a large budget deficit, or a low propensity to save tends to have a net capital inflow and a current account deficit”. The onus is on: a) Encouraging consumer spending by giving tax cuts and low interest rates. b) Providing good investment prospects to foreign customers as most of the big-shot investors find American securities less risky as compared to EU or other emerging markets. c) Consistent decline in competitiveness as the country is vastly dependent on importing goods rather than developing providing a boom to economies like India and China. * Ever since early 90s, the US has always imported more than they export. Thus which on the other hand has led to a need for cheaper imports from other countries to sustain an average American household. Since cheap labor is available in foreign countries most of the work is outsourced and hence their production is not up to their full potential. * The government on the other hand focuses on imports rather than improve the supply leading to a poor manufacturing sector. This is an advantage to countries like China which have cheap labor and is a major exporter to the U.S. Also as the government focuses on imports rather than supply to meet the demand major exporters like China get benefited. * The...

Factors That Create a Current Account Deficit

...The current-account balance is a report that covers a certain period; regularly a year, which indicates the difference between the inflow and outflow of money into and out of a country from the trade in goods and services, investment, saving, and income and cash transfers. When a country’s current account balance is positive (running a surplus), the country is a net lender to the rest of the world. When a country’s current account balance is negative (running a deficit), the country is a net borrower from the rest of the world. Therefore, the current-account balance is a way to determine its economic activity and can strongly reflect a country’s overall economic position. Ideally speaking, the current account balance should be zero, in the real world however this is highly improbable. The formula used for calculating the current account balance is CAB = X-M+NY+NCT. Where X = Exports of goods and services, M = Imports of goods and services, NY = Net income abroad and NCT = Net current transfers. It is important to understand from where a deficit or a surplus is stemming because sometimes looking at the current account as a whole could be misleading. In the United States, for example, current account deficit has been increasing steadily for several years now. Among the factors that have created a current account deficit, four of these are described as follows: 1) Consumer spending had been on the rise in the United States, motivated in great part to a growing real......

Balance of Payment, Current Account, Capital Account

...period, usually a year. It represents a summation of country's current demand and supply of the claims on foreign currencies and of foreign claims on its currency. These transactions include payments for the country's exports and imports of goods, services, financial capital, and financial transfers. Current account:The difference between a nation’s savings and its investment. The current account is an important indicator about an economy's health. It is defined as the sum of the balance of trade, net income from abroad and net current transfers. A positive current account balance indicates that the nation is a net lender to the rest of the world, while a negative current account balance indicates that it is a net borrower from the rest of the world. A current account surplus increases a nation’s net foreign assets by the amount of the surplus, and a current account deficit decreases it by that amount. The current account and the capital account are the two main components of a nation’s balance of payments. Capital account:In macroeconomics and international finance, the capital account is one of two primary components of the balance of payments, the other being the current account. Whereas the current account reflects a nation's net income, the capital account reflects net change in ownership of national assets. A surplus in the capital account means money is flowing into the country, but unlike a surplus in the current account, the...
