Abstract
Alcohol is an organic compound group that contains OH, meaning a hydroxyl, which is a functional group. Alcohols contain various properties such as boiling point, which is much higher than its parent hydrocarbon due to polarity and hydrogen bonding. They are soluble in water, due to this as the alcohol chain increases the solubility of water will decrease which shows of an inversely proportional relationship. Their chemical properties consist of combustion, as this is true because alcohols are able to burn because the end product they produce is water and carbon dioxide. A very obvious reaction they undergo is dehydration of course since they break down and produce water. In this lab, three different types of alcohols are evaluated …show more content…
Taking your three tubes, place each alcohol in them separately and add 1ml of cyclohexane.
2. Rattle the test tube gently to see if there is any change and evidence of miscibility within the tubes.
3. Repeat the first and second step but instead of using Cyclohexane, replace it with water. \
4. In the mixture with Cyclohexane, and in the mixture of water, take litmus paper and record the color change shown.
5. Dispose the contents carefully and with care along with notifying your supervisor and/or teacher.

Thus each of them does melt and boil at different temperatures. As for being soluble in Cyclohexane, both Butanol and Propanol were successfully diffused with the solution. But as for ethanol it was not able to be miscible with the cyclohexane. In regards to solubility and water, butanol and propanol were unsuccessful enough to be soluble in water, but ethanol was soluble in water. In regards to all the alcohols overall, as their carbon chain increases, their polarity will decrease leaving these two to be inversely
