One of the major complications when dealing with the DACA programs is the fact that it is just an executive order. “We need a fix desperately, and the simplest way to get one that works is to enact DACA into law, precisely as it is.” (Epstein) By making it into a clean deal it has the best chance of succeeding as a political compromise. By allowing them to have the ability of obtaining a driver’s license, Social Security, and employment, it reduces the risk that DACA recipients will burden society. This allows the administration to make its case in a new statement verifying the termination of DACA as of April 2018. In recent news for the program, as of May 2018, lawmakers have signed what is known as a discharge petition, a procedural maneuver that can bring legislation to the House floor if it is signed by a majority of members (Kopan). If the petition were to have been signed by enough supporters it could lead to a floor debate on as soon as June 2018. (Kopan) The petition already has more than a dozen Republicans on it already, although it remains unclear if the attempt made will round up enough support to force a House confrontation on the matter. While it starts with a number of Republicans in support, it would still need to roughly double the number of GOP members signing and the pick up of all Democrats in the House (Kopan). Discharge petitions are rare, but they are definitely not unheard of and with DACA it seems to be the best possible choice. Most Republicans have been split about a path to citizenship, "This debate is too important not to have," said Hurd, who has around one-third of the southern border as part of his district, more than any other single member in the House, "Let's have this debate on the House floor and let everybody bring their ideas to the forefront." said Reps Will Hurd from Texas.
