Conflict in the Florida territory between U.S. settlers and Seminole Indians grew into violence in December 1835. When Seminole warriors murdered Wiley Thompson, a senior Indian agent, and the “Dade Massacre” which resulted in the death of U.S. Army Officer Major Francis Dade and 107 of the 110 Soldiers in his command, starting the Second Seminole War. In September 1837, President Martin Van Buren assigned a force to Major General Thomas Jessup, the Senior Army Commander in Florida, which contained Colonel Zachary Taylor’s 1st Infantry regiment. Colonel Taylor was given an area of operations near swampy Lake Okeechobee and 1,032 Soldiers to hunt and defeat Seminole resistance and move the tribes to the reservation land in Oklahoma. Soldiers. At approximately 1230, the sun shining directly overhead and there was no wind, Colonel Taylor maneuvered his Soldiers squarely into the center of the swamp, and his plan was to directly attack Seminoles. The Soldiers sent forward first were the 132 Missouri Volunteers using European line formations. As soon as they moved within range, the Seminole using guerilla tactics opened with heavy fire. The Volunteers’ ranks were broken, and the commander Colonel Richard Gentry was fatally wounded and unable to rally them. The Seminoles then mounted a counterattack on the remaining soldiers. In the deadly assault some of the Soldiers were scalped. Colonel Gentry had suggested to Colonel Taylor during mission planning to use an encirclement strategy which he rejected, accusing Colonel Gentry of being afraid of a direct confrontation. This could have motivated Colonel Gentry to keep charging the Seminole positions despite the plan had the militia breaking contact at the first sign of enemy fire and reforming behind the regular army lines. This resulted in additional casualties because of the continued charge, when the Missouri Volunteers finally retreated to the rally point, they were too defeated and disorganized to reform as planned. Colonel Taylor followed the volunteers with a rank of

Pedophile

...* * Child Molestation and Homosexuality Ann Landers used to proclaim that the statement “Homosexuals are more inclined to molest children sexually than heterosexuals” is false.1 The American Psychological Association sponsored a work asserting: “Recognized researchers in the field on child abuse,… almost unanimously concur that homosexual people are actually less likely to approach children sexually.”2 Why is it, then, that we read about sex between boys and men in every newspaper? Does it merely reflect sensationalist journalism? We know that heterosexual molestation also occurs. But since there are so many more heterosexuals than homosexuals, which kind of child molestation — homosexual or heterosexual — is proportionately more common? The Scientific Evidence Three kinds of scientific evidence point to the proportion of homosexual molestation: 1) survey reports of molestation in the general population, 2) surveys of those caught and convicted of molestation, and 3) what homosexuals themselves have reported. These three lines of evidence suggest that the 1%-to-3% of adults who practice homosexuality3account for between a fifth and a third of all child molestation. Reports of Molestation by the General Population In 1983, a probability survey of the sexual experiences of 4,340 adults in five U.S. cities found that about 3% of men and 7% of women reported sexual involvement with a man before the age of 13 (i.e., 30% was homosexual).4 In 1983-84, a random survey...

All my life I’ve been a patsy. For as long as I can recall, I’ve been an easy mark for the pitches of peddlers, fundraisers, and operators of one sort or another. True, only some of these people have had dishonorable motives. The others—representatives of certain charitable agencies, for instance—have had the best of intentions. No matter. With personally disquieting frequency, I have always found myself in possession of unwanted magazine subscriptions or tickets to the sanitation workers’ ball. Probably...

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade...
