HOW DAGUPAN CITY GOT ITS NAME

In 1583, Bacnotan (or what is now known Dagupan) was said to be a marshland thickly covered with mangrove and nipa palm trees. Natives lived along the shoreline and riverbanks. Before the arrival of Spaniards in 16th century, Lingayen Gulf was already a prosperous place visited by traders from various Asian countries. The natives also had experience with pirates from Japan and China, and one of this is Lim Feng or Lim A-hong, a Chinese corsair who was later known in Philippine History as Limahong. In the year 1574, Limahong together with his men and the Spaniards had a long battle.
During the Malong Revolt in 1661, a big fire hit Bacnotan. Malong sent 3,000 supporters, most of whom were Zambal tribesmen to Ilocos and Cagayan to fight the Spaniards. The people of Bacnotan joined the Spanish in repelling the Zambal marauders, rebuilt the town and renamed it Nandaragupan, meaning where once stood the commercial center. Nandaragupan became a town in 1720, but the name was simplified to Dagupan. The city's name is derived from dagupan in the local Pangasinan language meaning 'gathering place' as the city has been a regional market center for centuries.S In 1762, Dagupan would be one of the first towns to join the Palaris Revolt against Spain.
In 17th century and onwards developments in the place took place with the opening of the docking station in Pantal (or what is now known as Pantalan Port) and eventually became a trading center. Bangus industry and fishponds also flourished, and Spaniards built roads connecting to Pangasinan and the Cagayan Valley. In 1891, Manila – Dagupan Railway was completed.

However, on March 7, 1898, the Dagupeños unveiled a coordinated attack on Spanish forces which was known as the the Battle of Dagupan that appears to have been planned months in advance. The revolutionary forces are armed only with bolos and lances and they attacked the Spanish with an ingenious rolling trench made of several banana tree trunks, wrapped in sheets of dried nipa palm leaves. The trenches were seven feet in diameter.

On June 20, 1947 after the World War II, Dagupan became a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 170. It was signed into law by President Manuel Roxas on October 15, 1947. Since this time, commercial establishments grew rapidly, more roads were built, schools and public markets were constructed. On July 16, 1990, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck northern Luzon. The worst hit cities were Cabanatuan, Baguio and Dagupan. A lot of public and private structures were destroyed or damaged when river banks slid into the Pantal River and dry land into the swampy areas.

Dagupan has risen since then to what is now as the commercial center of Pangasinan.

Background Study of Sex Workers

...INTRODUCTION Background of Study Prostitution is the performance of sexual acts for payment. It exists throughout the world, largely in urban areas. Some prostitutes work for themselves. Others work for men known as pimps or for woman called madams. Some prostitutes seek customers on streets and in other public places and this happen especially in developing countries where poverty is the main reason. (Shedlin, Michele G, World Book p.15, 2007) The idea of sex workers fighting for their human rights is a foreign concept to most people, even those who identify politically as progressives or feminists. Sex workers have lived on the margins of society through most of human history, and despite the prevalence of this work all over the world, sex workers are often treated as less than human, both in cultural attitudes and public policy. In fact, it cannot be said enough: sex workers are people—friends, neighbors, family members, wage earners, and parents—and they deserve the same human rights as everyone else. (http://www.ontheissuesmagazine.com/july08/july2008_1.php) Feminists and advocates of all stripes have argued that they want to work for the human rights of sex workers, often without an analysis of what human rights for sex workers might look like. While many people would agree that access to human rights includes the right to be free from harm, to have access to health care and housing, and to seek safe employment that pays a living wage, there is fierce...

...three children. After her training, Lourdes utilized her skills and now she sells homemade Longganisa, Tocino, Tapa, and Leche flan to government offices, schools, and her neighborhood to sustain the family’s income. SOLO PARENT 2 There are various cases of solo parenting in Dagupan City due to a number of reasons such as death of spouse, battering, abandonment, and infidelity. One of these cases is the case of Olive who was widowed at the age of 44 years old and left with four children (two girls and two boys). Olive was married to Armando, a person with disability due to polio and he was self-employed as a shoe repairman along A.B. Fernandez Avenue in Dagupan City. Armando had a habit of drinking alcohol after his work and he usually spent half of his daily earnings to sustain his alcoholism. Olive and Armando would end up arguing due to financial constraints which was brought about by his alcoholism. Armando’s drinking problem escalated and reached its saturation point which resulted to a number of illnesses such as hypertension and heart failure. He was brought twice at the Region I Medical Center through the hospital’s indigency program but sadly, during his second...

With a population of 161, 375, it is located along the seacoast and at the eastern margin on the delta of Agno River (Dagupan City Disaster Coordinating Council, 2011). It has a total land area of 4008 hectares with 31 barangays. It lies one meter above sea level and Pantal River flows through the city.
