Fear

...order for us to prevent our terrors to become a weakness. Being afraid of something can mean that you are facing a superior force in which you feel inferior to. Knowing you’re facing something bigger and more powerful can trigger that effect on your body and mind to try to abstain away from danger. One great example of fear is the one they instituted in North Korea. This nation is a ‘’population mind control by fear’’ (psyche truth). Despite the terrible and horrible living conditions, the North Korean people have never protested against their communist government. If you’re accused of political dissension the military will take you and your family into a labor camp, in which you will endure hard labor until the day of your death. They will never protest because they fear that 3 generations will be doomed to death (psyche truth). Another example of a group controlling or incorporating fear to achieve their personal goals is the news. They show how dangerous the outside world is and we’re intrigued by the fact there is something out there that will put our life into risk, this makes us want to know more about the subject, therefore; news will get more and higher ratings. Instead of fearing danger we find ourselves attracted and pulled into it which is odd to...

Alcohol Abuse

... Sarah looked over her shoulder, Reyes and Emma talking… A lot. Like almost sense she came off stage. Why did this make her feel sick? Not morning sickness sick, just worried sick. She turned around and mechanically began following her classmates out when Sean who was at the head of the group stopped and craned his head around in Emma’s direction. The queasy sensation doubled and for a second she wondered if she was just imagining beginning to sweat or if that was really happening. His expression was neutral, so maybe this had nothing to do with her. They were all teachers, teachers talk to one another, she tried to reason. He was talking in his normal voice to the class, giving instructions to go to the danger room and wait for an instructor, ok totally normal. Then he called her out, would he have said only for a moment if Reyes had said… No, well maybe… no way to tell, Banshee had always been far nicer of the two instructors. She forced a smile and let herself be led from the room. ……… At the back of the auditorium Brice watched his girlfriend, ordinarily he loved her passion...

Food Safety

...PREPARATION AND THE TEMPERATURE DANGER ZONESafe temperatures mean 45 F or below and 140 F or above. Any temperaturebetween 45 F and 140 F is considered to be in the TEMPERATURE DANGER ZONE.Food products have to be in the danger zone at some time during their preparation. However, 3 hours is the maximum time that a food can be in the danger zone withoutbecoming dangerously contaminated. After 3 hours in the danger zone, enoughbacteria can grow to cause foodborne disease outbreaks. Unfortunately, a food doesnot have to be in the danger zone for 3 consecutive hours to become a health hazard. The time accumulates; that is, each separate period which exposes the food to dangerzone temperatures counts toward the 3-hour limit. For example, a frozen food is to beprepared. First, the food has to be thawed. The thawing period places the food in thedanger zone. Later, the food may be mixed with other food items or chopped or cut. This again exposes the food to dangerous temperatures. In addition, the food may becontaminated from contact with other foods or utensils. If the food is left sitting at roomtemperature, it once again is in the danger zone. From this example, you can see that itis very easy for food to stay in the danger zone for 3 hours or more. When inspectingfood preparation procedures at a full-service food facility, you must determine thatpersonnel are following procedures to minimize the time that potentially hazardous fooditems remain in the danger...

Grey Album

...In 2004, one of the most notorious albums was made, The Grey Album. It consisted of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatle’s White Album. DJ Danger Mouse created this mash-up album without the permission of Jay-Z or The Beatles. The album included acapellas and instrumentals from both of the albums. As of result of this, recording company EMI filed a cease-and-desist letter to Danger Mouse as he started to distribute and sell the album. A fellow music group by the name of Negativland released a song with the name U2 on the front cover. Negativland sampled the song “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking for” and outtakes from the host of American Top 40, Casey Kasem. Negativland never received permission to use any of U2’s work. As soon as Negativland released the album for retail, recording company Island Records and Warner-Chappell Music filed a lawsuit against Negativland and their record company. The lawsuit ended with Negativland recalling all the copies of the single and having to pay over $70,000 in damages and legal costs. Artists should not be allowed to use each other’s work. According to the case study, Negativland claims “Our work is an authentic and original whole, being much more than the sum of its samples”. In other words, Negativland does acknowledge that they in fact did use U2’s work but it should be looked at as more than that. Negativland’s work is not original and is just refurbished pieces of some other artist’s work. It’s been said that true creativity is...

Dangers of Obesity

...Sandra Brown ENC 1101_09076 April 10, 2011 “Dangers of Obesity” Obesity is a leading cause for hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. There is a growing problem with obesity in America, which is leading to many health problems at a younger age. Hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease is more likely to occur to someone one with poor diet. Poor diet is the leading cause of obesity. According to Roland Strum’s article “The Effects Of Obesity, Smoking, And Drinking On Medical Problems And Costs” obesity has roughly the same association with chronic health conditions as age, smoking, and drinking. Hypertension is one of the many results of obesity. Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure. Obese people develop a resistance to insulin and that cause the blood pressure to rise. High blood pressure is more common in people that are overweight, than those that are not. “Many medical studies have shown that obesity presented an increase in the cardiac output and the blood volume, and in the arterial resistance. In fact, obesity induces a high secretion of insulin in trying to decrease the excessive sugar concentration in the blood. This insulin secretion is very high compared to a non-obese subject.” (www.blood-pressure-hypertension.com). Hypertension can be very dangerous if you do not get the proper medication and health care. One of the best ways to control high blood pressure is losing weight and proper diet. Diabetes is another result to obesity. Obesity is one...

Narcolepsy Dangers

...inconvenient but treatable disorder. There are many dangers in this disorder. There have been many deaths by someone falling asleep randomly behind the wheel of a car, some due to exhaustion or old age, a lot due to the driver suffering from narcolepsy. Others have had their social lives ruined, narcolepsy being a disease many can’t understand and so have been abandoned by family and friends. Without these essential social skills, life would become increasingly difficult in their future. While dangerous, narcolepsy is also extremely inconvenient to have. Finding out you have narcolepsy is a challenge in itself, from what I have read through personal stories and recounts. Then comes the bills from the doctor appointments, and the medication. When a person diagnosed with narcolepsy then tries to work to pay off said bills, they find themselves sleeping 14-17 hours a day, and then falling asleep at work. This begins a vicious cycle. However, there IS treatment for narcolepsy. Xyrem helps those suffering from this disorder get a better nights sleep. Amphetamine-like drugs are used to help get rid of all the symptoms as a whole, if only temporarily. Stimulants give users the energy to get through the day. While most of these are not the healthiest options, there is treatment for narcolepsy and it is not a hopeless cause. Even if narcolepsy is not the most dangerous disorder, it is still an extreme danger to many. The dangers of this disorder are too extreme to ignore. Many of...

Dangers of Texting

...Clivio 1 Thomas Clivio Professor Marie Salamone College Writing I October 17, 2012 Dangers of Texting With the advent of the cell phone came a new means of social media and communication called texting. But with all the benefits an emerging technology can offer, we can’t always predict what the impact will be on our society. This new form of communicating brought with it its own dialogue as well as its own dangers. We’ve seen an increase in accidents caused by distracted teen drivers who were texting, a new medium of bullying in our schools, and the newest trend that’s become popular with teens and young adults known as “sexting”. As cell phones become more popular, and the age of cell phone users gets younger and younger, so will the person who will be exposed to sexting. As our younger generation gets ever more influenced by the proliferation of sexually explicit images in the media and scantily dressed celebrities, the more difficult the job of a parent will become. How many more teens need to die from texting while driving or from committing suicide after sexting provocative images before we recognize this growing problem? With the introduction of texting to our youth and the impact it has on our society, we have been presented with a whole new set of concerns and it is clear that these concerns need to be addressed. The first forewarning of the dangers this new form of communication presented, came in the increase of distracted driver fatalities. The...

The Dangers of Smoking

...The Dangers of Smoking You find that many of your friends have taken up smoking. It is affecting their health. Write an article for your school newsletter on the dangers of smoking. Smoke that kills A smoker can easily be identified in any group. Not only does he reek of stale smoke, he also has bad breath, much to the dread of non-smokers. However, the effects of smoking are far more insidious than the offensive smell associated with smokers. Cigarette smoke contains many toxic substances like carbon monoxide, nicotine and carcinogens that not only cause irreparable damage to the smoker, but also to those around him who inhale the smoke. Carbon monoxide reduces blood capacity to carry oxygen, thus causing fatigue and panting even with the slightest physical exertion. The lack of oxygen in the body acts as a catalyst that accelerates the aging process, causing wrinkles. Nicotine contained in cigarette smoke reduces the activity of the brain and nervous system. It also raises the risk of high blood pressure. Nicotine causes the contraction of blood vessels and decrease of blood supply. This ultimately leads to heart attacks. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing certain kinds of cancers because cigarette smoke contains carcinogens. Long-time smokers often develop cancers of the mouth, larynx and lungs. Smoking not only endangers the smoker himself but also those who inhale secondary smoke -- smoke exhaled y smokers. In view of the many dangers of smoking...

Dangers of Technology

...The Dangers of Technology Major advancements in technology, specifically dealing with health, are a dangerous thing. Whether it be augmentations, medicine, or reanimation there are serious consequences for advancing technology both on an individual, moral level and for society as a whole. When someone decides to make advancements in science it typically comes at the cost of human relationships. New technology drives people away from each other. New technology is always hotly debated in the news. In the end a society has to decide whether or not a new technology is moral or not. Advancing technology also advances power, which is the most dangerous thing of all. The novel Frankenstein and the video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution explore these dangers. Technology is a dangerous tool to society because it has the ability to destroy human relationships, it can be morally wrong, and it can allow certain groups and individuals to gain scary amounts of power. In the beginning of Frankenstein, Victor was social and communicated with his friends and family often. After Victor created the Creature, he ran into Henry who took notice of the effects of the creation on Victor. Henry said, “I did not before remark how very ill you appear; so thin and pale; you look as though you have been watching for several nights.” (Shelley 45). Victor worked tirelessly on making advancements to science and it made him sick. He did not talk or see his friends or family for a long time. The Creature is...

Dangers of Knowledge

...Destruction of Knowledge They say that sometimes the pursuit of knowledge is the force and downfall of man’s quest to discover the unknown. Throughout the history of mankind, man has been faced with the temptations to reach the level of God. The Tower of Babel is the first attempt by man to become as powerful as God when man tries to build a tower that reaches the heavens, which ended in inevitable doom. In Jurassic Park and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley we have renowned scientists who try to accomplish feats that were never thought of and in the midst of things get carried away and things go unexpectedly wrong. This shows that the pursuit of knowledge can be very dangerous and have a catastrophic ending if not carefully planned. In the beginning these two men Victor Frankenstein and John Hammond both had amazing ideas that would change the world forever. But, in the end their experiment came to a stop because their creations turned on them and that’s when things started to get out of hand. Victor suffers because of his pursuit of knowledge and his creation that ultimately destroys his life. As the story goes on the monster starts to change as he gains knowledge. The creature at the start is innocent and means no harm. But, as he gains knowledge, he begins to learn that he does not fit in and becomes angry. This can also be related to Jurassic Park because, as time goes on in the film the dinosaurs also gain knowledge like when they gain the ability to open doors. When both...
