Introduction In order for the body to operate properly, it is necessary for homeostasis, or a relatively stable environment, to be maintained. The cardiac center is the medulla oblongata regulates the heart rate to maintain a stable environment. It is composed of two neural pools. One is the cardioacceleratory center and the other is the cardioinhibitory center. Each regulates the heartbeat through the sympathetic cardiac nerves and the parasympathetic fibers of the vagus nerves respectfully. Many factors affect the heart rate including sensory and emotional stimuli as well as receptor input from proprioceptors (in …show more content…
Materials
• Daphnia Magna
• Microscope
• Depression slide
• Eyedropper
• Substance: Asprin, Adrenelin, acetylcholine, sleeping pills, coffee, alka seltzer.
B. Methods
1. Obtained a microscope, depression slide and eyedropper.
2. Used eyedropper to capture Daphnia from stock culture and placed it on the depression slide.
Placed slide onto the microscope stage.
3. Adjusted microscope on the 4x objective to find Daphnia and locate the heartbeat.
4. Monitored the heartbeat for 15 seconds and multiplied the number by 4 to get the beats per minute. Recorded data on the table.
5. Obtained aspirin and placed two drops onto the slide with Daphnia.
6. Monitored the heartbeat for 15 seconds and multiplied the number by 4 to get beats per minute after substances was used. Recorded the data.
7. Used eyedropper to remove the Daphnia from the slide and returned to post experiment jar.
8. Repeated steps 5 through 8 for the other substances listed.

With each Daphnia, we tested various simulative and depressive substances and monitored the heart rate for changes. Each Daphnia started with a heart rate of about 180 beats per minute. After establishing initial heart rate (180 bpm), we added the first substance, aspirin to the Daphnia on the depression slide. After approximately 15 seconds, we retested the heart rate (finding it to have decreased to 20) and recorded the change (160 bpm less). Based on this change we established a percent change (89%) between the starting rate and the rate after the addition of substance. This continued on for the following 5 substances (which you can see in the table above). With this data, we were able to visually see the effects that chemical had on the heart. As expected the stimulate substance (adrenalin, acetylcholine, coffee) increased the heart rate. The same was true of the depressant substance (aspirin, sleeping pill and alka seltzer) in that they decreased the heart

We know that it is vital for our health, but not the reasons why. We celebrate dreams that provide inspiration, but often dismiss sleep as a chore.
