Dark Hope

Depression… Everything always starts out okay. Unfortunately it doesn’t always stay that way. In the beginning you start to feel dark and cold, as if you’re being followed by an oppressive, grey cloud. You shrug it off as if it’s just another rainy day, nothing you can’t handle. It soon casts a shadow across your world for almost as far as you can see, your faith in yourself diminishes… But there is still that glimmer of sun, the brightness of hope and happiness in the distance.
Run!
You’re trying your very best to make it, trying your hardest to be happy, trying your best to be accepted. But with every step, it seems as if that ray of hope is shrinking, getting further and further away.
Almost in complete darkness, you stop running and look around; everything’s gone, everyone has disappeared… You’re all alone.
You’ve ran so far, trying to make it by yourself, you were certain you didn’t need their help.
But now, you’re lost.
You were so sure you could make it by yourself, but what a surprise, you were wrong - Again - You’re always wrong, always managing to mess everything up. Why did you push them away? They only wanted to help, they were your friends, your family… Now they’re all gone, you forced them to leave, how could you have done that?
The more you dwell on your mistakes the faster the glimmer of hope dissolves into the ever growing darkness, your surroundings start to close in; as if you’re trapped in a box. The air thickens making it hard to breathe, everything feels like it’s colliding together around you. The small bright light of hope suddenly disappeared. You’re trapped; submerged in a misty darkness; all signs of hope and redemption are gone, will you ever escape this torment? Frantically, you look around trying to find the light again - but it’s gone and it won’t be back anytime soon.
Everything starts closing in even faster so you’re forced to start moving again: with every step taken your legs grow weaker and heavier, you’re ready to give up and collapse any minute now.
You fall.
You brace yourself for impact, but nothing happens; you just keep falling, plummeting into the abys. You try to scream, try to call out, but you know no-one will hear you. They’re all gone, remember? They won’t be coming back, not after you pushed them away like that. You try to choke back the fiery tears as they burn paths down your face. What did you do to deserve this? Why are you here? Why did it have to turn out like this?
Then, everything stops.
You hit the ground with a hard thump and strain your head to look from where you came, but see nothing… you’ve reached a point of no return.
After trying so hard you still managed to fail: Your effort wasn’t good enough, you weren’t strong enough, you are a failure. Maybe that’s why the others never came back… you failed them, let them down, disappointed them. Maybe it is time to give up… Maybe it would be better that way… Everyone would prefer it, they would be so much better off without you - You were just a burden to them.
All of these agonising thoughts start to flow through your head, but there is nothing you can do to stop them. In the midst of your panic and frustration, you notice a strange shadow forming in the distance. This strange silhouette seems warm and welcoming, but this idea of the unknown terrifies you.
What good could ever come out of a shadow in the darkness?
With nothing else to lose you decide to walk over there. You pick your tattered body up off of the floor, and slowly drag yourself over there. Surprisingly, the more you walk, the clearer the image is. You can start to make out what it is - You have an idea, but it can’t be true, you don’t want it to be…
You stop.
The dark shadow was now glowing in front of you… This is it, this is your ticket out of here. But this can’t be the only way, is it?
You step up onto the stool. Surely there has to be another way? Your jittering hands grab hold of what seems to be your only option. You put your head through to take a look at this possibility. You let go, leaving it tight around your neck.
You step off.
No turning back now.
The bright flashes of memories fly past you before your eyes…
Then there’s nothing… Nothing but black.

...London L10 9R5 18th June 1865 Dearest Walter, I’m writing to you today with a cup of tea by my side to let you know that I am safe in London. I do not want to discuss much about myself, likewise what I am doing; I want to discuss how Laura is. After I had the message about my letter being delivered to Laura and her not wanting to respond, I felt I ought to write to you. Hearing nothing after I have sent every one of those letters leaves me in the dark. I hope Walter, to not patronise you with this letter nevertheless I feel as though I have to get someone to articulate to Laura that I’m well. Her natural sensitiveness makes me hesitate to write to Laura once more. I do hope that she will find enough courage to compose me back a letter as not only does she needs to know I’m adequate; I need her to certify the same. By Laura not replying I hope I have not misunderstood her silence in thinking she is infuriated with me. I miss her writing to me, of her own thoughts and impressions, amid all the wonders she has seen. I hope you can comprehend my reasoning for leaving you and Laura. I realise it was a selfish act. Walter, as I write this letter to you and my darling sister; I think of Laura sobbing which seems to tear me to pieces. You realise Walter my tears are like mens for they do not flow as easily as they ought. In the year I spent helping you with your children, and situated by the fire reading stories, I learnt two very knowledgeable pieces of information. Firstly...

The Role Of Hope In The Return Of The King

...Doe Zantamata once said “Don’t fan the flames of despair. Light a spark of hope instead.” In the sensational book The Return of the King, many times do the characters “light a spark of hope” in the hearts of others. And the cool thing is that this can happen in real life, too! Hope, when planted in the right spot, can light a fire in someone's heart propelling them to accomplish their goals. But sometimes, sacrifice can give greater hope than anything else. When my Great-Grandpa was serving in World War I, him and his squad was pinned down by a German MG 08. His leader told the squad to stay put and run when he jumped up to attract the attention of the gunner. He jumped up and saved the mission as the rest of his team crawled away. Sadly,...

...one gets enclosed in the maze itself. There is no way out but it is filled entirely of false hope that only gets devastatingly crushed over time. This false hope is brought by the possibility of finding one of the keys to 10 doors with one supposedly leading out of the maze but it is all a lie there is no way out once you get trapped in you stay there for all of eternity. This maze is darker than the deepest void of existence; its sole purpose is to morph your soul into one of despair, sorrow, rage, and agony and shut out all light from within and engulf you in the darkness of your negative emotions. I would not wish this fate upon even the people whom which I hate the greatest for no one deserves a disastrous fate such as this. As I finally came out of mental shock I realized my eyes were as if they been shut off and I was completely discombobulated I heard a door way open and suddenly a dark force pulled me into the next chamber I rag dolled as I was forced forward further into the darkness. I am slowly losing it more and more with every passing second. My sight had yet to return, still no escape route has been located, I may well be trapped here forever. However I will not give up I have someone I need to meet and nothing will keep me from doing so. The discombobulating feeling from the first room still lingered but had begun to lessen. I stumbled blindly around the room in hopes of finding a door but it was to no avail. I decided to just wait for it to be all over. I waited...

Araby Analysis

...English 1020 01 October 13 "From Boy to Darkness"         In "Araby" by James Joyce, we look into the quest of an un-named boy as he holds onto his last bit of hope while taking the relentless step into adulthood. Instantly, the boy has a sense of unimportance, for he is unnamed. He is desperately searching for a sense of purpose, and change. The boy progresses from an innocent child, to an adult riddled with anguish as a result of his journey to the bazaar. His complications run anywhere from lost religion, and infatuation with a girl, to becoming ecstatic for a bazaar, only to experience his "first bitter taste of reality"(Coulthard97) when he arrives.         The story begins by taking the character down a blind street, which foreshadows that the upcoming pursuit is doomed for an abrupt end that leads nowhere. Also, at the blind end of the street is an uninhabited house that was once occupied by a priest who has passed on to the grave, leaving his earthly possessions to the educational system. The priest is a representation of  the church and religion, which is now deceased and, "detached from its neighbours in a square ground" (Joyce213). Behind the house is an overgrown, unmanaged garden that revolves around a lonely tree. Some could see that this represents the Garden of Eden, and it is obviously being neglected after it's caretaker (the priest) has died. Therefore, the boy starts the story with already questionable faith to religion before his encounters with Mangan's...

Walt Whitman On The Beach At Night

...Even in despair, our will determines us. To have hope; to not give up. To shine as if we are Immortals; like a star. This emphasis and description of hope remind me of a poet named Walt Whitman. In the Walt Whitman poem, “On the Beach at Night” the poet describes the clouds as ferocious and mad tempered as he says, “While ravening clouds, the burial clouds, in black masses spreading, Lower sullen and fast athwart and down the sky”. He then mentions Jupiter and the sisters the Pleiades. He describes them as this “calm belt of ether”. He uses these lines as a way of showing the comparison of the light of the sky and the dark clouds. Walt Whitman says “something that shall endure longer even than lustrous Jupiter. Longer than the sun or any revolving...

If Winter Comes Can Spring Be Far Behind?

...If Winter Comes Can Spring be far behind? – Essay Day is followed by night and night by day. Similarly, in life every period of sorrow and despair has at last to come to end. It is followed by a period of peace, comfort and joy. We must have a firm belief in the goodness of things and have a strong self-confidence. There is no occasion for feeling dismayed. “If hopes are dupes, fears may be liars.” Life is full of tears and smiles, tears predominate. Sufferings and misfortunes may loom large on the horizon. They may make life worthless. Despair and disappointment may look endless. It does not mean one should cease to live. Deep and dark clouds of failures may eclipse the sun of success, but for how long! Failures and frustrations must give way to hope and happiness. The words of the poet convey a note of optimism when darkness surrounds us. They goad us to keep up high spirits and never be pessimistic in life. They assume that smiles and joys will come to our life In spite of the failures, sorrows and sufferings that dampen our spirit. Many situations come when man wants to quit the stage of life. If desires are not fulfilled life, becomes worthless. If man gets no response in love he wants to commit suicide. If his friend leaves him in the lurch he frets and fumes and does not want to survive. He gets many heart-breaks when his dreams vanish like particles of smoke Into the air. Lying on the bed when he takes stock of his life and broods over his misfortunes, he feels like...

While There Is Life, There Is Hope

...“There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow” (Marden) Hope, is a word used too commonly but not defined very clearly. When people hope on something, they are simply wishing for it to happen. Think of a woman who has been diagnosed with cancer. Her husband has died and her children have moved away. She has no one to care for her so she hopes every day that she will become better, and by doing that it can give her peace of mind and relieve stress. It can let her see a positive outlook in her life, which leads her to eating the right foods, taking her medicine, and exercising more. To her, hope is the small spark when everything else in her world is dark. Hope is driving her to do things and get the best end results on her life. She plans for the worst, but hopes for the best. You will suffer, you will despair, you will cry and you will feel sorrow. It’s unavoidable. But guess what! There is good news, there is Hope. It means that life doesn’t have to be all gloom and doom. Every moment you live is a chance to turn things around, change your perspective, find your focus, achieve your goals, and continue on your mission. All you need is hope. Even if all things seem lost, as long as you have hope, things might just change for the better. Now, it takes more than hope to make a positive impact against your struggles, but hope is the start. “Hope never abandons you; you abandon...

Hope In Laura Hillenbrand's The Awakening

...“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” (QuotesGram). During the darkest moments in someone's life, someone may believe that they have nothing at all. In reality, they only need to have one thing, and that is hope. Louis “Louie” Zamperini was an Olympic runner and World War II veteran. During the war, he was sent out with an unreliable B-24 plane, often referred to as a “Flying Coffin,” in an effort to find missing soldiers, but his plane crashed in the ocean. This launched an unfortunate chain of events that left a permanent dent in his life. He was imprisoned at four Japanese camps during this dark chapter in his life. Instead of giving up, he uses hope and resilience to endure the most difficult...

Health

...Coping with events Numerous people appear to be quite resilient to significant stress struggles that may possess an orientation to events that are resistant to such threats. We propose that one significant aspect of this orientation is the tendency to view adversities as something that can happen to anyone and is reflected in the tendency of people entering uncertain contexts to prepare by imagining a range of possible outcomes. Positive psychology represents a branch of psychological science concerned with understanding the development of well-being, virtue and resilience. One standpoint is that wellbeing, virtue and resilience are achieved by complex strivings that are not attributable simply to being optimistic. Meaning focusing on the positive, expressing positive emotions and leaving the negative behind. This does not mean that there are no negative thoughts or emotions but rather that it plays an important role in health, wellbeing and personal growth ( Davis, Asliturk). 1. Build Positive Beliefs in Your Abilities Research has demonstrated that self-esteem plays an important role in coping with stress and recovering from difficult events. Remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments. Becoming more confident about your own ability to respond and deal with crisis is a great way to build resilience for the future. 2. Hope

...Hope is something everyone needs. To be without hope is to have a dismal future. Without hope, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Hope is something that everyone needs when there is nothing they can do in a seemingly miserable situation. I was placed in this position not too long ago. It was like any other day, I was walking home from school with my siblings. When I entered through the front door, I instantly felt a sense of tension in the air. My mom, older brother, aunt, uncle, and grandparents were all sitting in the living room, with looks of weightiness upon their faces. My mother told me and my little brothers to have a seat next to her. We sat down and she grabbed my hand, then she told me the horrible news. She told us that she had Cervical Cancer. The announcement struck my heart to the core, the tears started to gradually fall from my eyes. Those were the tears of a broken heart. They started flowing until there are no more tears left to express my pain. Once I finally stop crying my mother gave me big hug and looked at me and said everything was going to be okay. From that day on I told myself that would be her rock, and she could depend on me. Months have passed, and I have gone to every surgery and chemotherapy appointment my mother has had. The first month had went by like a breeze, it really did seem like she was going to come out of this healthier than she went in. As the second month started to approach, I started seeing changes in my mom. She...

He entered Canada with hope. This eventually leads to the final question, “Was it that far-gone?”. The question indicates his past, in which he states he’s not sure if it’s too far out of his reach. His response leads into a paragraph about his hope in Canada. While answering “Was it that far-gone?”, Max’s tone changes. Max’s tone takes a few dramatic turns throughout the passage, beginning in the first paragraph. In the first paragraph, he’s obviously tired and distressed. ...Identify examples of bias, fallacies, and specific rhetorical devices in the speech. Bias: Political Bias In the beginning of the video, the campaigner states “the fighting liberal, the friend of the working man,” showing bias towards liberals. The speaker’s comment makes the audience think that only liberals are friends of the “working man.” Fallacies: Scapegoat The speaker says “Boss Jim W. Gettys' political machine -- now in complete control of the government of this State! I made no campaign promises, because until a few weeks ago I had no hope of being elected.” The power of Getty’s “political machine” is purely to put blame elsewhere as an excuse for the speaker’s neglect to make campaign promises. Scare tactic The speaker says “The working man and the slum child know they can expect my best efforts in their interests. The decent, ordinary citizens know that I'll do everything in my power to protect the underprivileged, the underpaid, and the underfed!” in an attempt to scare the audience into thinking the opposing party will not protect the underprivileged, underpaid, and underfed. Ad Hominen: Multiple times the speaker attacks “boss Jim W. Gettys’” but neglects to ever mention specific policies of Gettys that he disagrees with. It appears as though he simply has a personal vendetta against Gettys. Strawman: “Well, I'd make my promises now if I weren't too busy arranging to keep them.” This statement’s vagueness appears to be an effort for the speaker...
