Database Search

...The two databases that I searched were the British Journal of Nursing and RCNi (Royal College of Nursing). I chose them because I wanted to focus on the actual practice of critical care nursing and knowing how to notice if a patient was deteriorating. I thought that these databases would have the most relevant articles to what I was looking for. The first article that I found was on British Nursing Journals. “All of the articles from this database are written by nurses and are subject to review by leading authorities in the profession” (British Journal of Nursing, 2016). I thought that this would be most helpful because it is coming from someone who has actually has experience in the profession, not just someone who is doing research on it. The article that I found discussed how it is important to not only assess the five main vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and pulse) but also take into account a patient’s pain, level of consciousness, and also watch their urine output. According to Elliott and Coventry (2012), this will help the nurse to recognize that the patient is deteriorating. The second article that I chose was from the Royal College of Nursing (RCNi). RCNi is included in a group of 11 publications by Nursing Standard and is the United Kingdom’s top selling journals (RCNi, 2016). I chose this database for the same reason that I chose the first. This particular article was written by a nurse who was observing practices...

Nurs 439 Discussion Question Week 2

...conduct an effective search of the literature to be certain you have not missed important sources of information. I know I have been challenged in the past with being certain I had investigated all potential sources of evidence. For example, many times, I am researching educational literature and I often find that I can locate information from a variety of sources including nursing databases (Cinahl). One of the most helpful things I have found to do is when I am conducting a search is to look in the reference list for the articles I am choosing to discover if I am missing an important article or book from a source I haven’t explored yet. I look forward to learning about the challenges you faced in your literature search and how you overcame those challenges. I can assure you that we will all learn a lot from this discussion. The Course Outcomes (COs) we will apply in Unit 3 include: • Examine the sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice. • Apply research principles to the interpretation of the content of published research studies. Review the guidelines, grading rubric, and brief video (link found in guidelines) that explain the Research Database Assignment due in Week 4. Search for one research database that is relevant to this assignment, and briefly describe the issue you are investigating, the name of the research database, and where it may be found, that is, the URL. Briefly describe your process for locating databases that contain relevant...

Secondary Index

...Abstract—A database index is a data structure that improves the speed of data retrieval operations on a database table at the cost of slower writes and increased storage space. This paper describes data indexes in database management system and the types of data indexes and how the data organized. It focuses on the secondary index in the database and a secondary index on a non key field implemented. Index Terms—Database Indexes, Indexes, Secondary Indexes. (keywords) database system would look up an index to find on which disk blocks the corresponding record resides, and then fetch the disk block, to get the account record. Keeping a sorted list of account numbers would not work well on every large databases with millions of accounts, since the index would itself be very big; further, even through keeping the index sorted reduces the search time, finding an account can still be further time-consuming. Instead, more I. Introduction An index for a file in a database system works in much the same way as the index in any normal books. If we want to learn a particular topic (described by a word or phrase) in this book, we can search for the topic in the index at the back of the book, find the pages where it occurs, and then read the pages to find the information we are looking for. The words in the index are in sorted order, making it easy to find the word we are looking for. Moreover, the index much smaller than the book, further reducing the effort needed to find the word...

Database Encryptin Solution

...Database Encryption Solution Introduction Critical data in a database needs to be protected against internal and external threats. A database encryption solution can be used to achieve this protection in addition to providing the regulatory requirements. In the past, access control was used as a means of protecting information against access by unauthorized users. Access control did not prove very effective and this has led to the adoption of encryption where information is transformed into some form that cannot be understood by unauthorized users. Decryption is the process by which the transformed text is retransformed into a form that can be understood. This paper will seek to analyze a database encryption solution that will protect critical data against internal and external threats and at the same time meet regulatory requirements. 2. Choosing the Point of Encryption Encryption can be done at different places within an enterprise. Encryption is used to minimize the number of people who access the encryption keys. Before encryption, implementation decisions needs to be made (Mattsson, (2005, p.2). The most important thing is choosing the point of implementation. This helps in determining the work that needs to be done so that integration is effective and also determining the security model. Data needs to be protected both when at rest and during movement between applications and the database. 2. 1. Database-Layer Encryption In this case, an enterprise...

...must first start with a set. A set can be numbers, objects, people etc. When you have sets of things, they can be combined to create a union or have elements in common. For example, if a company were looking for an employee within the database system they could search using last names. Say department A has Smith, Jones, Brown, Doe. Department B has Doe, White, Turner, Smith. The union of these sets would be written as follows: A U B = {Jones, Brown, Doe, Smith, White, Turner} The sets intersect with the two names in common, Doe and Smith. That would be written as: A n B= {Doe, Smith} The logical “and” and the logical “or” are important for database retrieval and flowcharts to help the system or reader to understand which way they need to go to seek out the information requested. Simple and compound statements help understand this notion. To help understand this let’s refer back to the original example. If the person searching the company database wanted to find a specific employee they would search for the last name and maybe first initial. This would take the search from a simple statement to a compound statement. The database would then need to search for the last name first and when it found the right name, Smith, it would then need to search for the first initial...

Database Environment

...The Getty Provenance Institute’s database (The Gettys research institute, 2012) contains 1.1 million records. All of these records can be used for a wide variety of research. According to the institute the database can be used for assistance in finding information for Projects, and for the Study of Collecting. According to the Database, “The J. Paul Getty Museum acquired The Entombment (ca. 1612) by Peter Paul Rubens in a Christie's sale in 1992. At that time, the provenance of the painting could only be traced as far back as the mid-19th century. The number 146, located on the face of the painting, appeared to be an inventory number (the Getty Research Institute, 2012). A search in the Provenance Index's Archival Inventories database retrieved a single record in which the artist name (Rubens) and item number (146) matched. The search lead to a 1651 inventory preserved in the Archivo de la Casa de Alba, Palacio de Liria in Madrid, which lists this Rubens painting. Possibly its first owner was Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán Carpio (1629–1687)”. Other Institutions are not as lucky some. Some Museums are not so fortunate to find the item number associated with the picture. When it is time to introduce the collections into a database, curators of small museums find themselves in a little bit of trouble. The features and capabilities offered by the newer commercial and professional collection systems are more than they will ever need, more than they can support and more than they...

MySQL 4.1 added the ability to override the default system collation at the database, table, and field level. The default collation in MySQL, latin1_swedish_ci, works fine for English because English contains no special characters such as accents. phpMyAdmin allows you to edit the collations of your database, tables, and fields if you desire to support languages other than or in addition to English.) 2- Create a table with fields (data types) * Click on the webapps database on the left * Enter the table name and number of columns – employees, 6 *...

...Downloaded By: [Schmelich, Volker] At: 10:58 11 March 2010 Focus THEME COMPETITIVESTRATEGY FOR ELECTRONIC COMMERCE In many respects, Korean economy has been coordinated by the visible hand of the government. The world economy is becoming a borderless one, which directly affects the Korean economy driving it into an open economy. The rising cost of production factors, wage rates, interest rates, and land costs stalls economic growth. Both internal and external economic environment casts doubt over the prospects of the Korean economy. Both public and private sectors are looking for ways to maintain their competitive edge by improving economic efficiency, and one of those efforts is the use of IT. They are making an utmost effort to build the information-communication infrastructure, and promoting EC to explore new business opportunities. Various efforts are being made to facilitate the diffusion of the EC in Korea. The diffusion of proprietary EC within a conglomerate may be made quickly with little trouble. The IOS or EC within a conglomerate is highly likely to be a closed one, which is not unusual among Korean conglomerates. This may result in a situation that goes against global technological future: an open EC system. Korean corporates have recently devoted a vast amount of effort to business process reengineering using IT to improve efficiency. In contrasts, SMEs lack appropriate IT skills requirrd for such innovative movements. This may result...

...idea of database evaluation. The author believe that there are several different areas of the database that should be looked at such as the color of the site, the way the search screen are made and more. He believes that learning this gives to the true understanding of the database evaluation. Brooks sees that sellers will describe the databases in the way of the numbers of printed work that is available in complete written material. But Brooks believes that for evaluation and direct comparing of information is not suffice. He thinks that people that evaluate these things should look at subsets of the numbers to get the complete truth and understanding of the treasure of a good developed database. Brooks shows that two databases created to reach the research needs of an educational group. An example of a question in a database could be “How many of the publications are in complete text?” The database also had a list of the complete texted publications and it tells you how many of the publications that were active and the ones that were peer-reviewed. It also told about the complete text that is continuing being published. The article did speak about embargoes which is a delay in the time the completed text material is available. The idea with the embargoes is that anyone that is using the system should understand that any other material that is similar to the one material will normally have a delay too. Basic Functions of a Database for a Business

...data is a critical element to a firm’s success. No matter what form of business one is involved in - whether it be a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation - having at least one quality database is a must if he or she expects favourable results. With effective and efficient databases, companies are able to deliver great service or produce the required units of merchandise on a timely manner. It is an established fact that running a business is no easy feat. This is especially true for a relatively new one, which is still struggling to make a name for itself while trying to generate more capital for its operations. Because of the sheer number of challenges an emerging proprietor faces, he or she needs as much help as he/she can have when it comes to managing his/her business. Databases provide great help for this very problem. Listed below are the several purposes databases generally try to serve to a typical business: * It helps organize important information – information is a key factor to any business, and having systematically arranged records help the user know what needs to be done, how it must be done, and who it is being done for. * It helps save time – with a database, instead of spending precious time going through piles of papers just to search for the necessary information, the user is just a query away from retrieving what is needed. * It aids the communication among employees – due to the different functions involved in conducting...
