Scenario 1 There are quite a few fields that should be tracked when moving and tracking equipment in this manner. Some examples would be type of equipment, the shipping company, the shipping method, shipping/delivery date, the people who packaged the equipment and the status at time of shipping and time of delivery. The easiest way to track would be to assign each item and/or different category separate ID’s. A couple of key relationships to look at are going to be shipping company versus amount of damaged equipment arriving on destination and then the relationship between the people packing the equipment versus how much damage is being caused. Excel can handle the data needed to find the relationships in the data. It would be relatively easy to handle, but may cause more time doing data entry for analysis. Using a database would make data entry a lot simpler, but it is unnecessary. If you know Excel, it can do a lot for you. Also, I do not believe an enterprise database would be necessary in this scenario since the information collected would be used internally. None of this information would be used across a company or across organizations. The data would be used to make more informed decisions in regards to this one job. In this instance a decision support system (DSS) would be beneficial. The DSS could analyze the data and develop patterns and trends to make predictions (Kroenke. 2014, Chapter 9). By using these predictions, you could easily choose a shipping company or method based on the equipment, location, distance being shipping or by any other variable that could and should be considered.
Scenario 2 Although small, this company is spread out and not in a single location, they would require a WAN. LAN’s are used more for business operating within the same facility that could use a wired connection; whereas a WAN utilizes a wireless connection due to
