DATA WAREHOUSE
Introduction
In todays competitive and information packed age, management, executives and business users need well organized data for decision support and for the organizational planning. Decision Support Systems (DSS) were developed to aid executives and managers to better understand the information and facilitate at making better decisions. But DSS has its own limitations. Due to the information requirement and their complexity, it was difficult for Decision Support System to extract all necessary information from the data. Therefore to overcome this drawback, a new data storage system, called the Data Warehouse was developed.

What is a Data Warehouse?
A data warehouse is a relational database. It is not used for daily routine transaction processing. It contains remarkable (having great significance) data derived from the transaction data. It also contains data from other sources like external systems, or applications. It is designed for query and analysis.

Data Warehouse Vs Traditional Database
A database is a collection of the relational data. Database system comprises of a database and database software. Similarly, a data warehouse is a collection of relational data as well as supporting system. If we look closer at it, we will find that both the traditional database and the data warehouse have indexes, fields, keys, views and etc. We will notice that there is no difference between the traditional database and the data warehouse. But actually there is a difference between the two of them. The traditional database stores transactional data like relational, object oriented, network or hierarchical. While the data warehouses are mainly developed for retrieving historical transaction data for management, executives

Dbms (Obms & Oracle 91)

...MC0067 - 01 Marks - 40 DBMS (OBMS & ORACLE 91) 1. Write a note on File based system/ Data base system Solution: File-Based Systems: Conventionally, Before the database Systems evolved , data in the software’s Systems was stored in and represented using flats files. Drawbacks of File-Based Systems: File - Based Systems [pic] As shown in the figure, in a file-based system, different programs in the same application may be interacting with different private data files. There is no system enforcing any standardized control on the organization and structure of these data files. • Data Redundancy and Inconsistency Since data resides in different private data files, there are chances of redundancy and resulting inconsistency. For example, in the above example shown, the same customer can have a savings account as well as a mortgage loan. Here the customer details may be duplicated since the programs for the two functions store their corresponding data in two different data files. This gives rr.>e to redundancy in the customer's data. Since the same data is stored in two files, inconsistency arises if a change made in the data in one file is not reflected in the other. • Unanticipated Queries In a file-based system, handling sudden/ad-hoc queries can be difficult, since it requires changes in the existing programs. • Data Isolation Though data used by different programs in the application may be related, they reside in isolated data files. ...

Financial Intelligence

...8 IDEAS FOR ACCOUNTING BI SUCCESS Business Intelligence (BI)is a phrase that can mean many things. This white paper is focused on the topic of Business Intelligence for the accounting department. Your accounting department’s BI solution should serve your needs effectively. BI for accounting should be considered successful when the authorized accounting department staff have all the necessary software tools required to see the information in all necessary formats to answer all questions asked in the allocated time. Accounting departments need to have a window into the hundreds of tables of data that are stored in databases controlled by the accounting software. They also need to be able to manipulate that data for both compliance and ad-hoc purposes. Lastly, they need the ability to do this without taxing IT resources. If your organization is involved in, or considering a BI implementation, you know there are a lot of options out there. Many solutions are even providing specialized platforms for supporting line-ofbusiness applications. The promises of these BI options are shortened implementation cycles and reduced costs. Many vendors have gone a long way towards making data warehousing and BI tools more available and affordable for the mid-market. However, the mid-market accountant’s true needs are often underserved, resulting in large additional investments. These additional costs are due to the fact that you also need to spend time building on top of the platform that the...

Data Mining

...Data Mining Objectives: Highlight the characteristics of Data mining Operations, Techniques and Tools. A Brief Overview Online Analytical Processing (OLAP): OLAP is the dynamic synthesis, analysis, and consolidation of large volumns of multi-dimensional data. Multi-dimensional OLAP support common analyst operations, such as: ▪ Considation – aggregate of data, e.g. roll-ups from branches to regions. ▪ Drill-down – showing details, just the reverse of considation. ▪ Slicing and dicing – pivoting. Looking at the data from different viewpoints. E.g. X, Y, Z axis as salesman, Nth quarter and products, or region, Nth quarter and products. A Brief Overview Data Mining: Construct an advanced architecture for storing information in a multi-dimension data warehouse is just the first step to evolve from traditional DBMS. To realize the value of a data warehouse, it is necessary to extract the knowledge hidden within the warehouse. Unlike OLAP, which reveal patterns that are known in advance, Data Mining uses the machine learning techniques to find hidden relationships within data. So Data Mining is to ▪ Analyse data, ▪ Use software techniques ▪ Finding hidden and unexpected patterns and relationships in sets of data. Examples of Data Mining Applications: ▪ Identifying potential credit card customer groups ▪ Identifying buying patterns of customers. ▪ Predicting trends of market...

Data Mining

...Data Mining/Data Warehousing Matthew P Bartman Strayer University Ibrahim Elhag CIS 111– Intro to Relational Database Management June 9, 2013 Data Mining/Data Warehousing When it comes to technology especially in terms of storing data there are two ways that it can be done and that is through data mining and data warehousing. With each type of storage there are trends and benefits. In terms of data warehousing there are 5 key benefits one of them being that it enhance business intelligence. What this means is that business processes can be applied directly instead of things having to be done with limited information or on gut instinct. Another benefit of data warehousing is that it can also save time meaning that if a decision has to be made the data can be retrieved quickly instead of having to find data from multiple sources. Not only does data warehousing enhance business intelligence and save time but it can also enchance data quality and consistency. This is accomplished by converting all data into one common format and will make it consistent with all departments which ensures accuracy with the data as well. While these key benefits another one is that it can provide historical intelligence which means that analayze different time periods and trends to make future predictions. One other key benefit is that it provides a great return on investment. The reason being that a data warehouse generates more revenue...

Business Intelligence Applications

...Business Intelligence Applications Paul Villela CSCI 4304:Database Systems Dr. Carolyn W. Green 2 December 2014 Business Intelligence Applications On the May 4th, 2014 episode of Mad Men (appropriately entitled “The Monolith”, a clever nod to the iconic black monolith which provides the impetus for the evolutionary leap from beast to man in Arthur C Clarke’s novel “2001: A Space Odyssey”) Sterling Cooper & Partners, the fictional ad agency around which the show revolves, purchases and installs a brand new IBM 360 computer. While the vast majority of the office greets the massive, expensive machine with much apprehension (“What man lay on his back counting stars and thought about a number?” asks Don Draper, head of the Creative Department (played by John Hamm)) (Stevenson, 2014), Senior Partner and visionary Jim Cutler (played by Harry Hamlin) understands the power and potential of just such a machine, particularly in the field of advertising. Sterling Cooper & Partners gain an edge that their competition would not have for several more years, as well as a service they can offer their customers, one many of whom would not provide for themselves for even longer. What Jim Cutler was envisioning was a strategic idea currently referred to as Business Intelligence. A Brief History of Business Intelligence The concept of Business Intelligence (BI) began as a direct descendent of an information system called the Decision Support System (DSS), a system used for complex...

...this remote data will be stored locally thereby increasing the replication factor by one. It also uses a replication budget to limit the storage consumed by the dynamically created replica. An Elephant Trap , a mechanism to find the largest flows in a network link structure is used to replicate popular files. A probabilistic approach is also used for the ageing mechanism. • Advantages 1. Improves data locality with no extra network overhead. 2. Turn around and slow down time is improved. 3. It is scheduler agnostic, so it can be used in parallel with other schemes. • Limitations 1. Storage requirements are high. More data structures and synchronization mechanisms are needed. 2. Intense modification of Hadoop is required. 7. CHEETAH: Datawarehouse built on top of Hadoop with flexibility and scalability is Cheetah[7]. Cheetah combines both data warehouse and Map/Reduce technologies. It makes easier for SQL user to work. Since data is usually stored in column format, it has the overhead of query reconstruction and cannot guarantee that all fields of the needed record are present in the same Data Node. Cheetah provides only identical layout for all replicas and no column grouping. For processing any data in the cell, it has to decompress the whole cell which will result in unnecessary column reads and I/O throughput is limited. • Advantages : 1. It provides a simple query language which is easily understood by people having little SQL knowledge. 2. It utilizes Hadoop's optimization...
