David G. Farragut was a naval officer in the american civil war and played an important role in some battles. He was born in Campbell’s Station, Tennessee on July 5 1801. Farragut lived for 69 years until he died on August 14, 1870 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He died a peaceful death of natural causes. In his early life, Farragut’s father served in several wars, so he was sent to live with Captain David Porter. David Porter eventually became his official adoptive father, which made David Dixon Porter his “foster brother”. Farragut started his career as a sailor and commanded a prize ship that was captured during the war of 1812 at the early age of 12 years old. In April of 1862 while he was commander of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron “Flag Officer” Farragut took the city and New Orleans. In honor of this act, the Union created the military rank of Rear Admiral. Later, in July 1862, Farragut passed the batteries that were defending Vicksburg, but he was unsuccessful and was forced to retreat. In 1863 he acted poorly on his own account at the Siege of Port Hudson. The plan was for Nathaniel Banks’ army to create a diversion while Farragut’s flotilla passed through the confederate forces, but instead of beginning on the morning of March 15, Farragut begun in the evening of March 14 and had to retreat suffering heacy
