Quant Investments Probability

...Investments”, mused Alain over his pate de foie gras and champagne. It was lunchtime on Christmas Eve, and his three colleagues Belén, Carlos and Dawood had already set off on holiday to far-off, exotic locations. The four of them had worked as a close team of analysts for the past 15 months since graduating as MBAs, and Alain realised that their performances had not come up to expectations. Alain feared that all four may lose their jobs shortly. At this moment of low spirits, Xavier, one of the senior partners whom Alain had always found remarkably candid, joined him for lunch. “Well, Alain, I’m sure you have heard rumours about the board meeting this morning. The future of the four of you was discussed and a decision was taken to release one of you. I can’t tell you who - the Chairman is writing to you all immediately. However, I can say that we were unable to make the decision on merit, so we made it at random. The Chairman took one of four cards, each of which had one of your names on the back!” “So, I have a one in four chance of being out of work after Christmas”, said Alain. He felt relieved, as he had thought the odds might be worse. “But of course you know definitely who it is”, he added. Alain felt he could leach rather more out of the partner. “Since we both know that at least two out of Belén, Carlos or Dawood will definitely have a job here next year, if you tell me the name of two of them who will keep their jobs, it will still leave me in the......

A Comparison of the Tale of “Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp” and the Disney Movie Aladdin: a Cultural Study

...A Comparison of the tale of “Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp” and the Disney Movie Aladdin: A Cultural Study According to N. J. Dawood, the translator of The Thousand and One Nights, “Aladdin has been retold or presented to so many different generations all over the world that it can perhaps be rightly described as the most renowned story invented by man”. Interestingly enough, “Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp” was not part of the original collection of stories that composed The Arabian Nights. No one knows exactly when a given story is originated, but it is obvious that some stories circulated orally for centuries before they actually were collected or written down. The story of Aladdin appeared for the first time in Antoine Galland’s (1646-1715) translation of the Thousand and One Nights, the first major European version. Before Galland, there was no known Arabic version of Aladdin and his lamp. The first Arabic version showed up after Galland’s version and very well could have been translations of Galland’s French version. One of the more recent and most popular versions of “Aladdin” was an animated feature produced in 1992 by Walt Disney Pictures. Aladdin made over $217 million in revenue in the United States, and over $504 million worldwide. Even though the American film and the medieval Arabian tale share common elements and are both plotted around a young impoverished boy named Aladdin, the moral lessons they offer differ in ways that can be described through the......

Quantitative Methods

...James W. Taylor February 2012 Imperial College EMBA 2012 Quantitative Methods Individual Assignment This assignment consists of two parts. Part A is worth 50% of the marks, and Part B is worth the remaining 50%. Your report for the two parts should consist of no more than 1,500 words. Part A – Blanket Systems Blanket Systems is developing and testing a new computer workstation, OB1, which it will introduce to the market in the next 6 months. OB1 will be sold under a three-year warranty covering parts and labour. The company has decided to subcontract the service support for the warranty and has entered negotiations about the support contract with Fixit Inc. Fixit has proposed two different pricing schemes for the subcontract. The first involves the payment of a fixed fee of $1,000,000 and the second a variable fee of $250 per workstation sold, subject to a minimum fee of $350,000. Under both schemes, the payment will be made one year after the introduction of the workstation to the market at which point the product will be replaced by newer models not covered by the warranty service subcontract. At the moment, there is uncertainty about the sales potential of the new workstation. Sales of OB1 are expected to come from two sources: (i) the successful closure by senior management of a major purchase of 2000 units by a long standing customer, (ii) the efforts of regional sales offices. Given the state of the negotiations with the long-standing customer, the current estimate......

...------------------------------------------------- Definition Religion is a belief system that is based on faith rather than objectively verifiable criteria. Most religions share most of the following characteristics: * belief in one or more supernatural agents that take interest in and affect our fate; * worship of and prayer to these supernatural agents, in hopes of bringing about events beyond human or natural means * purported answers to some fundamental questions of human existence, e.g. * How did the world around us come to be as it is, and especially how humankind? * What happens to us when we die? * Why do good/bad things happen to us? * a moral code, i.e. a set of rules for adherents to live by; and * a culture and community of adherents, based on the religion. ------------------------------------------------- Malay[edit] See also: Malaysian Malay Traditional Malay attire is the "baju melayu", a loose tunic which is worn over trousers and usually accompanied with a "sampin", which is a sarong which is wrapped around a man's hips.[1] It is also often accompanied with a songkok or cap, on their head. Traditional clothing for men in Malaysia consists of a silk or cotton skirt and shirt with a scarf like piece of cloth tied around his waist. Zakat

...this zakaat becomes obligatory. Reasons for zakaat al-fitr and what Islam says about it Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made zakaat al-fitr obligatory as a means of purifying the fasting person from idle talk and foul language, and to feed the poor. Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is an accepted zakaat, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is just a kind of charity (sadaqah).” (Reported by Abu Dawood, 1371. Al-Nawawi said: Abu Dawood reported it from Ibn ‘Abbaas with a hasan isnaad). “Purifying” means purifying the soul of the one who has fasted Ramadaan. With regard to the word “foul language”, Ibn al-Atheer said: “ ‘Foul language’ refers to obscene speech. ‘Feeding [the poor]’ refers to food that is edible. ‘Whoever pays it before the prayer’ means before Salaat al-‘Eid. ‘It is an accepted zakaat’ – here zakaat means sadaqat al-fitr. ‘Just a kind of charity’ means a kind of charity that could be given at any time.” (‘Awn al-Ma’bood Sharh Abi Dawood). It was said that this is what was meant by the aayah in Soorat al-A’laa (interpretation of the meaning): “But those will prosper who purify themselves, and glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in Prayer.” [al-A’laa 87:14-15 – Yusuf Ali’s translation]. It was reported that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez and Abu’l-‘Aaliyah said: “He [the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] paid zakaat al-fitr then he went out for the......

...Risk Management in Construction Projects Using Combined Analytic Hierarchy Process and Risk Map Framework Satyendra Kumar Sharma* This paper aims at developing a risk management framework for project risk management in construction projects and demonstrate its application in an ongoing construction project in Amravati, Maharashtra, India. The various risk factors encountered in construction projects and various risk management methods already in use are identified and then a framework is developed which combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and risk map methods. The data was collected from various stakeholders in the construction project. The findings reveal that the proposed framework helps managers to objectively find out the most important risk factor associated with the project and accordingly work towards risk minimization. Introduction Construction projects in today’s world are marred by risks which delay the completion of projects on time or result in excessive cost overruns. These losses are multiplied if the size of the project and investments made are huge. These risks may include unavailability of materials, erratic weather changes, lack of funds, low quality of sub- contractors (Wu and Olson, 2009), etc. Though the managers realize the importance of these risk factors and mitigating them, they fall short of an objective method to manage these risks based on a priority basis (Martin, 2006). They mostly use ad-hoc or unscientific methods like rule of......
