According to Porter, what factors determine the level of competitive intensity in an industry? Costs Among his factors that affect competitive intensity, Porter mentions a few cost-related factors. These include high fixed costs, high storage costs and low switching costs. When companies invest significantly in fixed costs, they generally compete mightily to sell enough products to cover those costs. High costs of storage prompt companies to compete to make sales quickly. When customers have free mobility to change providers it forces more intense competitive rivalry. Rhetorical Analysis

...Aristotelian Appeal with Logos and Ethos to support that women have been used as depended and overly sensual. Dorian Lynskey in his article “Kapow! Attack of the feminist superheroes” argues that women have always been portrayed as a secondary, dependent and overly-sexualized. It is great to see this trend changing after the introduction of superheroes, such as Kamala Khan by Marvel. The author has given multiple points in support of how people have criticized the portrayal of women in the comics. He has given several examples of how the trends are shifting in the stories of the two comic giants namely Marvel and DC Comics. Dorian Lynskey writes on various topics in the Guardian and the Observer. He is the author of the book named “33 Revolutions per Minute: A History of Protest Songs”. Alan Moore’s “Chapter Twelve” of Watchmen is a series of comic books which were published by DC Comics in the year 1987. Alan Moore is an English writer who is well-known for his work in comic books, including V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and From Hell. The group of vigilantes includes a single woman who is shown to be weeping and scared at all times. The men of the group are in charge of all decision making. ...Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics The DC Comics made a name for themselves in 1939 as they were then set up by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson. During that time its company was known as National Allied by Publications. The initials for the DC Comic books was taken from the Detective Comic series. With that series became Batman. Another line of comic books, known as Action Comics, which had a new super hero named Superman. Over the years these two super heroes became very popular and still two of the most popular super heros to ever appear in comic books and that mad the way for other super heroes. The Golden age was more like a baby boom in comic books. Tones of comics are being produced for the men at war, people all over, which trippled in sales making millions. All comes to and end when the war ends. Super heros "die" when the war ends. In the 1950′s the industry was under attack. Parents of America didn't think the comics were up to standards for children. Either parents were they ripping them up, burning them, or telling thier children to sell thier comics, it was a cultural revolution. The company managed to keep it's success during that time and created some comics about westerns, romance, but it was the recreations of the super heroes which made them so successful in the comic book industry known as the Silver Age. It was during 1965 when the industry introduced a new/old super hero Flash. This character was brought back and "updated" to be placed in more present times...

The Masked Masked Heroes

...Krystal Gladden Professor deLauney ENG 102 05/10/16 The Masked Mask Heroes A costume is meant to mask the true identity of a hero"(2009). But what if the mask is their true identity. In the graphic novel "Watchmen" by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Moore and Gibbons show how that a few of the vigilantes have a problem with juggling their masked persona and their every day persona. We can see a constant tug of war between who the vigilantes truly see themselves as and what is accepted in their society. We see the pull or hold that each vigilante masked persona has on them on a daily. So, we constantly see how Rorschach and Dan are battling within themselves about who they truly are. Rorschach is one of the first masked heroes we get to meet. We meet Rorschach after the death of another masked hero Edward Blake aka The Comedian. We go throughout most of the graphic novel without knowing the identity of Rorschach or his "real name". We quickly learn that Rorschach is a very black or white type of person, there is no in between with this guy. Rorschach is unapologetic too; he doesn't go by what society sees as bad or good, but off of his own judgment of right or wrong. He is also the only masked hero still fighting crime even though the Keene Act made it illegal to do so. It is not until the end of chapter 5, we get to actually see the human face behind the mask. Rorschach happens to be "The End Is Nigh" guy from earlier chapters, whom "real" name is Walter Joseph Kovacs. We learn...

Video Games Neil Gaiman

...Professor English 15 May 2015 Birth of the New American Gods: The Video Game God There are gods, old and new, among us and little do people know they are born by humans. The Video Game god is a new god because people spend time, money, and worship games in a new ways which allows this new god to exist. People can say it’s in the past where gods have been created through worship but the creations of these gods haven’t stop just because people just stop worshipping certain named deities, but only have been forgotten. These gods still live today and are still being created by human beings; in similar ways gods have been created in the past, but people subconsciously do it. A new god that can be seen today in our time can be the Video Game God, and this god has been created by people all over the globe. The Video Game God is a new god that people spent hours, days, even weeks on enjoying the entertainment, influences and effect the god has had on human, and what the god provides to his people. Before proving that there is a Video Game God that exists in the modern world, one needs to understand what a god truly is. After reading Neil Gaiman novel one can grasp a better understanding that religion isn’t needed for a god to exist and that, “Religions are, by definition, metaphors, after all: God is a dream, a hope, a woman, an ironist, a father, a city, a house of many rooms[…]” (Gaiman). In this part of the chapter people can understand how religion isn’t needed and is...

The humans of Earth are slowly being segregated to join either the Avengers or the Justice League. Or at least read the comics and buy the merchandise of one. But only one! Sacrifice Of Heroism

...When the word “hero” is first mentioned, it is commonly thought as the kind of hero who is generally male, with a cape that chases and flows behind his back, a skin tight costume, and the mighty strength that he possesses to defeat criminals and villains. These super heroes that are seen in comic books, television shows, and movies always end up with the damsel in distress adoring them or some kind of acknowledgement; they lift their chins up, and chests forward portraying confidence and no struggles or worries when it comes to saving the day. While in reality, true heroes can be ordinary human beings where “saving the day” becomes a risk and where something valuable may get lost. Although heroes receive recognition in response to their success, sacrifice contributes more to heroism because, it portrays selflessness, courage, and it earns a warrior the title of a hero. Sacrifice demonstrates selflessness in a hero. One of the most important traits that characterize a hero is humility. A hero is not self centered and takes care for the good and well being of their people, state, community, or something of importance. On September 11, 2001 during the terrorist attacks in New York, many responders voluntarily sacrificed their lives to rescue others who were in danger. These volunteers were called heroes for risking their lives to help others. Although giving up something valuable like life for someone else’s does not always result in success, their sacrifice still makes them unconditional...

Batman V Superman: Dawn of a Disaster

...Rant: Batman V Superman Well, I may be a week late to the party, but that won't stop me from writing about this terrible movie. That's right, I said it. This movie is trash and there is no debate. Of course, you can enjoy this movie and like it, that's your opinion, but you can't say that this movie was 'good' in any way. Why have I decided to write about this movie? Well, I was on Instagram the other day and there were way too many comments on various posts actually DEFENDING this piece of shit. I got into a number of arguments with random people because they were just trashing on other people and the critics for disliking the movie. I cannot believe how hard headed some blind fanboys are. To the point where I knew I clearly won the argument because their next replies were always something like: "You're just a dumb fag who hates on movies go kill yourself". I'm not exaggerating. These people need to be stopped. They need to open their eyes and see that this movie was not good AT ALL. Some more examples of comments I found on Instagram were like "This movie is perfection" or "Everyone who hates this movie is stupid and wouldn't understand the dark theme because they only like light-hearted Marvel movies". What exactly was wrong with this movie? Everything. I mean the fight scenes were pretty cool, but that's about it. It was just an overall mess. The story jumped around everywhere and couldn't focus on anything. Let's start with the first thing wrong, the title. It shouldn't...

Superman Returns: Does The World Need A Savior?

...Does the World Need a Savior? Superman Returns and the Man of Steel are all two movies that adapted from the comic and they all talk about the story of Superman. They have many places in common. The main characters’ names, Lois and Clark, are the same. They all depict the Superman, the son of El, with super power. Superman helps humanity to keep the order of the world. However, the figures of superman in Superman Returns and in the Man of Steel have some theological differences. In the film Superman Returns, the main character has a more divine nature. He is more monophysite, which means Clark in the movie has a human body, but he holds a divine nature. Throughout the movie, he is Clark when he works for the magazine. He is superman when he changes into the Superman costume. He uses the Clark’s body to conceal his divinity. Lois Lane, the women he loves, and all the people who work with him do not know Clark is the Superman. When he is Superman he does not want the other people to notice his human part, he wants the other people to pay attention to his divine part. That means he recognizes himself as a divine. In one clip, when Lois gives interview to Superman and asks him where did he go, Superman answers that he went to his planet, Krypton. This shows that Superman does not see Earth as his own home and has more divine nature. However, in the film Man of Steel, Superman shows more of his Clark’s side, the human side. From the beginning we know that his father sent him to Earth...

Batman Research Paper

...Who is your favorite superhero? The list of answers can be endless. However, in terms of who is the greatest, the answer is simple, Batman. Batman is one of the most if not the most popular superhero in the world. Batman is known from movies, comics, video games, and even cartoons. But what makes Batman the greatest superhero is not his fame, it's his attribute and skills. One reason why Batman is the greatest superhero is his alter ego. His real name is Bruce Wayne, a millionaire playboy and CEO of Wayne Enterprises. He is a rich man with no need to worry about money or income because of his vast wealth. Also according to DC Comics, he is an exceptional martial artist. This alter ego is certainly better than working as a reporter for a...

Everybody's Definition Of A Hero

...Everybody's definition of hero is you have to have super power x-ray vision, the ability to fly, or a magical hammer to squash villains. Like Superman, Green Lantern, and Batman are heros to everybody. However, that is not what a hero has to be. A hero is just someone that’s always there when you need them, and someone that cares for you. That is what makes a hero a hero. Everyone has different opinions on heros. A good characteristic to have as a hero is to always be there for others no matter what is going on. A hero is like a parent -- they are always there for you when you need them. For example, my mom and dad are always there for me when I need to talk to them about something, or even when i'm having a really bad day. A hero can also...

Personal Narrative: My Super Hero

...So a majority of people have heard of Marvel. Spiderman, the Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor, a part of that. But who has heard of My Super Hero? What My Super Hero? Right? Who? What? Huh? Well, My Super Hero, a man-sized dill pickle guy, with a classy top hat, fights crime, mostly dolphin-face man, in style. He has three main superpowers. His best ability, to transform into any shape, helps a lot. The limitation to this stunning ability makes My Super Hero unable to physically change his atoms. Changing the atomic makeup of himself would cause mass radiation so he can’t. Staying always a pickle, he changes into a limited version of an object. He can become a mechanical machine that could fight crime, and help citizens. Becoming really small would potentially create a black hole since he can change his density. Splitting apart circumvents this. Speaking still of superpowers, another of them arrives a harmless form. He can change the opinions of people. He doesn’t just control their mind or something. He has persuasion skills that travel far beyond any normal person, but his persuasion can’t change completely anyone’s mind. Listening becomes a trouble for many. Dolphin-face man’s stubbornness sits far higher than the tallest thing that ever stood on the earth. So the persuasion of dolphin-face man lays as an impossibility. Even more superpowers, My Super Hero’s last and most harmless ability stings the eyes of the enemy with dill pickle juice. The useful superpower can stop x-ray...

Shannon Is My Hero

...When we were young, we all had some kind of hero. Some of the heroes as a kid consisted of ones like Batman, Robin Hood, Hulk, and Superman. All of these characters did heroic actions that made kids love them, or even idolize them, but as we grow older heroes change. Growing up, I never thought about who my hero was until I was in high school and realized that she had always been right beside me. My hero is Shannon Clover; my elementary enemy, middle school best friend, and life-time hero. Shannon is my hero because she is able to overcome tremendous obstacles, go after her dreams, and is hard working. Overcoming obstacles is something that everyone will have in their life, but the way you overcome it can be something amazing. When Shannon was twelve years old, her mom had a stroke and was in the hospital and then in rehab for a long period of time. During that time Shannon had to learn how to do laundry, dishes, and cook for herself, unlike most twelve year olds. Later in her life she found love, or so she thought. Shannon was in a relationship that brought her down both mentally and physically. While both the stroke and the relationship affected Shannon’s life immensely, she was always still able to stay on top of school and put her problems to the side when needed, which leads to the second reason why she is my hero. Shannon is also my hero for going after her dreams and not letting anything stand in the way of that. Shannon was and always has been at the top in everything...

Boys Will Be Men

...Roger Logan Professor Garvin English 1010 Paper #3 Comic Book Boys Peter Middleton’s essay “Boys Will Be Men” begins with simple anecdotes about the relationships between boys and men of different ages. Middleton then changes his focus towards comic books, where his focus remains all the way through the rest of the paper. Circling back to his original thoughts, the focus on comic books leads to an analysis of comic books in regards to children and their development into men. In his conclusion to the essay, Middleton states, “Nevertheless, action comics for boys are certainly damaging because they offer false solutions to the difficulties of growing up which both sexes face” (Middleton 141). Often Middleton points out that the reason that little boys read such comic books is that their true role models, their fathers, are not home. So in their absence, the children latch onto the traits found inherent in the superheroes they read about. However, the newly found role models, and superheroes, do not represent that which should be portrayed to our children. Throughout many comic book series there seems to always be portrayed a sense of masculinity gone wrong or hypermasculinity. Along with others, though primarily in the comic series of both Batman and of Spiderman, this specific form of masculinity being shown to the children is expressed through a relationship between the superhero, and the law. In the end, comic books become what is essentially a display case for the extremes...
