Dead Poets Society

Dear dad

I am writing to you because I would like to tell you about my situation right now. I don't feel that there is a reason to live anymore. I can’t live any longer. It may well be that you are my father but for that reason you should not decide everything for me. I am old enough to take care of my own life. As you know, is I soon an adult, and I can take my own decisions and I will be able to take the consequences of my own choices.

It’s nice that you want help and advise me in which way I should go. You should know that I really value that, but most of all, I need to take care of my own life, and then go after my dreams. You should support me. As you know have I always wanted to be an actor. It is really difficult to follow my dreams. When you keep holding me back.

This is my dream, and I don´t care If you agree or not.

It was your choice to bring me at this school; instead of I could go for my dreams. But now you may take the risk for your choice, and this will be my death. When I am dead I would be sitting up in the sky at the most beautiful star, where i will be looking at you and the boarding school with all the good boys and specially Todd Anderson.

I have thought about it in long time, now I stand here with a gun in my hand. And these are the last words for you. I really love you, but not the way to be my father.

By the way, you must give Todd Anderson my compliments and say what happen for me and say that I love him and he have a special place in my heart and I will never forget my best friend.

Love from me Neil Perry

Dead Poets Society

...Dead Poets Society I’ve read the book Dead Poets Society and I’m going to tell you about on of the characters in the book. His name is John Keating and he’s native American between 30-35 years old. John works as an English teacher and he has just got a new job at Welton Academy, which is the best boarding school in USA. John worked as Chester school in London a couple of years before Welton. Mr. Keating himself graduated as a student from Welton. In this essay I’m going to discuss and prove why I believe John Keating is a great teacher. The first time I noticed that John was a great teacher was at his first lesson with his new class. My reaction was that he was a good leader because he advocated important things like “Carpe Diem", which means seize the day. Another thing I observed was how he spoke to his students. He had good confidence, which infected in a positive way and gave the students self confidence. In the beginning of the lesson he started to say “O captain! My captain”, and then he wanted that the guys should call him Mr. Keating or “O captain! My captain!” These simple words made attention from the students. Another scenario was that he very quickly got good contact whit the students. His relationship with the guys was very good because he talked with them a lot. I think he was more like a friend then a strict teacher who hated the students. Neil had some problems whit his father about what he may do or not may do. Then Neil picked John to...

Dead Poets Society

...Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American film about a teacher and the impact he has on his students. The main theme of the movie in carpe diem, or seizing the day. Watching the movie really makes you wonder, “How much time are you wasting?” There are a whole bunch of different types of characters in the movie. Some appeal more to the theme then others, and some help you understand the meaning even more. The whole movie Mr.Keating talks about making the most of your day, and living life to the fullest. Neil Perry, CHarlie Dalton, and Knox Overstreet all took it to heart and really tried living their life, and seizing the day. Neil Perry was one of the characters who admired Mr.Keating’s lessons the most. Neil made the decision to do what his heart wants and join the play. Neil also started the Dead Poets Society so the boys could do something together. Knox Overstreet was in love with a girl from another school, and he showed up with a poem he wrote for her. Charlie Dalton is another character that I admired because he stayed true to his beliefs and did not sign the paper about Mr.Keating. The majority of the characters understood Mr.Keating and looked up to him. There were a few characters that didn’t listen to him until the very end of the movie, and a...

Dead Poets Society

...Dead poets society-essay At the end of the novel Dead Poets Society, Neil who has been very actively involved in the Dead Poets Society kills himself. Neil Perry was though a very confident and popular student who thrived at school, which his collection of achievement pens represents. He was also well liked by both his peers and teachers and was a natural leader. Inspired by his passionate English teacher, Mr. Keating, he reestablishes the Dead Poets Society. This shows that he was prepared to challenge authority. He does this when going behind his controlling father’s back and auditions for the schools musical. It ends in a complete disaster and his dad catches him. As a result, Neil commits suicide at the end. Some might accuse Neil’s father who denied his son the chance of living his dream. That he was too harsh and mean. I on the other hand think this is a huge misunderstanding. I think that like many parents Mr. Perry wanted what was best for his son, which led to extremely high expectations. Where as Neil wanted to explore who he was and what he wanted to do. The huge expectation could defiantly have played in as a factor for Neil’s decision to kill himself. Neil probably also saw this as more as an act of a tyrant, and not as tough love. But the biggest factor was probably Mr. Perry’s need to control his son’s entire life. And Neil probably saw suicide as the only way to escape his father’s grasp. Which is why I think Mr. Perry caused his son’s death. Others...

Dead Poets Society

...Dead Poets Society Due to John Keating’s unorthodox way of teaching it brings out many different themes in this movie. The main theme of this movie is the Latin word Carpe Diem which means “seize the day.” The very first day of class Mr. Keating explains to them that opportunities will come in life, that are time on earth is limited and we must take advantages of opportunities we have. Neil Perry in my opinion is the first character of the Dead Poets Society to start to understand Mr. Keating’s way of teaching, and apply it to his own life. Neil finally understands what he wants to do in life after being in Mr. Keating’s classroom. His opportunity comes when a play is being casted and the main role is open, which cause Neil to say to himself seize the day. Neil winds up getting the part, but after his father finds out he tells him he is not allowed to participate in the play the next day. This caused another theme to come out in Neil thinking for his self and stop listen to others sometimes. He finally stood up to his father who tried to force him to be a doctor and go to school for that. When he finally found his passion for acting he followed through it and though for himself. This decision also leads to his death but he got to do something he loved for his life and was happy about it. I believe so many students had a positive impact from Mr. Keating’s type of teaching because it was different. He was so passionate about teaching in his own way it caused another side...

Dead Poets Society Conformist

...Not all people are capable of fully thinking for themselves and choosing to forge their own path that society may not agree with. For such people, taking great risks is likely not possible so subconsciously they choose to live their life as a conformist. The film Dead Poets Society illustrates the success a conformist may experience. From the moment he first appears in the story, the audience is made aware that Cameron is not destined for greatness. An extremely shy rule follower, Cameron lives life as “quote here” (Citation). Ultimately, when push comes to shove, Cameron decides to betray his friends telling the school all about Mr. Keating’s influence on Neil Perry and how he encouraged the recreation of the Dead Poets Society club. In the dramatic final scene of the...

Review: “Dead Poets Society”

...Review: “Dead Poets Society” by Peter Weir In 1990, Dead Poets Society won the 62nd Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Peter Weir as the director who succeed in narrating a story about youth and death, dream and despair. From my point of view, it is a profound movie that intended to inspire and provoke thoughts; at the same time, to bring a combination of humor and drama to the audience while pushing a non-conformist ideology at the core of the story. Besides, there are many brief quotations from Tennyson, Herrick, Whitman and even Vachel Lindsay, as well as a brave excursion into prose that takes us as far as Thoreau's Walden. The director Peter Weir can make good use of the poetry to transfer a spirit of personal freedom. In this movie, the Hollywood star Robin Williams as the mercurial John Keating, a teacher of English at the exclusive Welton Academy in Vermont -- the "best prep school in America" -- in the year of 1959. Actually, that was an age of “killing the individuality”,and perhaps we are still living in the same age. At the beginning of the plot, the director indicated two different ways of education. During the ceremony of Welton Academy, all the students were required to dress the uniforms and repeat the school motto togeher:“tradition, discipline, honor and excellence”. At that moment, the school hall immerged itself with silence. On the contrary, when the new teacher Mr.Keating was walking at a brisk pace towards the...

Dead Poets Society Review

...Film title and date: Dead Poets Society, 1989 Director: Peter Weir Actors playing the teacher(s): Robin Williams plays the role of Mr. Keating. Context: John Keating is an English teacher who has passion for teaching. He is different from other teachers. He uses unique methods to enlighten students. He told his students about Dead Poets Society and encourages them to discover love and passion in life. Each of his students is inspired in their own way and their lives have changed. View of teaching: Mr. Keating is different from other teachers. He taught in a way that his students would have never learned from any other teacher. His students turned to enthusiastic about poems, savor their life and language because Mr. Keating reminded them to seize the day “Carpe Diem”. He involves students in the need for poem to let out their passion for life. He said “in my class you will learn to think for yourself again. You will learn to savor words and language.” He guides students to free their mind and they should contribute the future instead of being constrained by the past and see things from different angles. He doesn’t just teach how important the textbooks are but teach the boys about being themselves. In the first class he showed the boys the photo of alumni who were once where they were standing, but they are now dead. He makes the boys think about what legacy they would leave to mankind in the future and how to love themselves. Mr. Keating’s teaching philosophy has a profound...

Dead Poets Society Essay

...This essay will be about the movie Dead Poets Society and the rules which are imposed by the teacher Mr. Keating and also how the teachers deal with students who break the rules. In the movie we can see that the teacher is a hero to his students, the teacher uses different types of methods and applies different rules to which the school applies, this in a sense is very important as one must be aware of the context in which they are teaching. The rules applied in this movie may seem to show that Mr. Keating is a very good teacher, but as the context is not appropriate for his teaching methods it portrays him as being a bad teacher. Firstly, I will be talking about the teacher’s style of teaching, Mr. Keating is a teacher who wants his students to think for themselves, and encourages them to do what they think its right even if they are told the opposite. He also mentions that words and ideas can change the world, assuring the students that they can do whatever they please because their thoughts matter. Mr. Keating pushes his students to find their own voice. Mr.Keating does not apply simple classroom rules he makes students rip out from books because he believes they are unnecessary, he also does not use the classroom like it should be, students are allowed to stand up tables to prove a point, he also takes his students outside of the classroom teaching in different environments such as in the courtyard or applying poetry with physical education. It also seems as if the teacher...

Final Paper on Dead Poets Society

...jumprope. Everyones lives interconnected throughout. Once i moved into my new neighborhood i started to notice quite the opposite the neighbors barely knew each other everybody just sort of minded there own business and only speak on a need to know basis and were also much more judgmental. So for me i have found myself to be less social with people from higher class then i would be with people from the lower class because i feel like you can just talk to them about anything there not constantly spell checking you and judging your actions so heavily. Women i don't believe to always be at a disadvantage to men in some ways they can be certainly but in others not so much it just depends on the scenario. You could make the argument that the society is patriarchal but i believe that to do that you would have to find a country or nation where it is better and comparatively i think the U.S would stack up with lots of others in the discussion of women's right. Race and racial relations is something that is really in our heads more or less. Scientist have proven the as far as dan between “races” in human beings they have no distinct way of identifying a...

Examples Of Transcendentalism In Dead Poets Society

...The film Dead Poets Society illustrates how belief in transcendentalism can sometimes have a dangerous effect. Mr. Keating a transcendental has inspired his student Neil, who tried to take a dangerous risk and eventually took his own life. During Mr. Keating first day of teaching, he introduces the saying “ Gather ye rosebuds while ye may… Carpe Diem” (?). Mr. Keating wanted his students, including Neil to take out of this quote the importance of seizing the day and seeking opportunities in life. He wanted them to act for themselves in order to live up each day the way they want it to be. This expression is interpreted from a transcendentalist point of view and has greatly impacted Neil’s decision of pursuing an acting career. According to...

Search for Identity in Dead Poets Society

... the search for self is an extremely crucial step in actualization of our unique attributes. Without an identity, a person is merely a shell; it is each person’s unique personality that makes every person different from the other. The film Dead Poets Society clearly traces the search for identity and how every individual has a unique identity. It is easy to see that each character represents a certain quality. Todd's individual traits, especially his newfound confidence, portray Emersonian attributes. Charlie's fearless character who leads the group represents Thoreau's qualities. However, Neil is a meld of both qualities through his desires to please himself and not conform to his father's ideals. Todd, the initially reclusive member of the group, shows Emersonian ideals in that he eventually breaks out of the shell conforming him, preventing him from fully interacting with his peers; he finally shatters the barrier restricting him from freely being himself by reading his poem to the class, finally expressing the Emersonian ideal of nonconformity: “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist” (Emerson 279). At the beginning of the film, Todd is too shy to be comfortable with the people around him, thus already estranging him from society. However, as he spends more time in Mr. Keating’s class, he learns to open himself up to people and be comfortable with his own personality. Eventually, he reaches the breaking point where he must take a complete step out of his comfort zone...

The Catcher in the Rye/the Dead Poets Society

...The Catcher in the Rye/The Dead Poets Society Holden Caufield, narrator and main character in The Catcher in the Rye, is a young man coming of age, searching for who he is and what he wants to be in life. Holden wants to escape the conformity and others expectations. He came from a fairly wealthy family whose parents are estranged in a way. John Keating, a new English instructor played by Robin Williams in The Dead Poets Society, uses bold teaching techniques to motivate his pupils. This causes his students to rebel against school and parental norms. Could a teacher like Keating with his un-uniformed teaching methods tap into Holden’s potential? In this essay I will argue that he could not. Holden Caufield is a troubled young man, alienating himself from his peers and the world around him. He also manages to get kicked out of prep school for the third time. I think Holden failing every class except English is not due to a lack of intelligence, but a way of rebelling against the expectations of others and avoiding becoming like everyone else. He feels most people are phony, yet in a way Holden is a phony also. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, “Phoniness is described as artificial, counterfeit, or hypocritical.” These are all actions displayed by Holden at several times throughout the novel. Phony is one of the words heavily used by Holden to describe the actions of others, but not himself. Before judging others he should take a look at himself to evaluate his faults...

Dead Poets Society Movie Review

...A. Having watched the film “Dead Poets Society”, discuss the notion of the importance of liberal arts. Liberal arts, according to Merriam Webster Dictionary, are areas of study that are intended to give you general knowledge, rather than to develop specific skills needed for a profession. To simplify the definition, liberal arts enhances the intellectual capacities of the person, it enhances his/her reasons and judgement. This movie did and did not really show the real ideals of the importance of liberal arts. As stated in the definition, liberal arts enhances the person’s reasons and judgement, the film did a good job with the development of the characters but there is no enhancement of judgement (of the characters) present in the film. Dead Poets Society, for me, did not really show me the real meaning of liberal arts because of the way the characters decide for their own fate. For example is Neil Perry, because of his amusement to the new teacher (Mr. Keating), he joined the bandwagon and went to acting even though his parents doesn’t allow him to. I know people might contradict me with do-want-you-want statement but I will argue with them about know the consequences of your actions and decisions and how it will affect the people around you. (I know there is a theory about that but I already forgot what it is.) Todd did warn Neil about what will happen but Neil insisted. Another from Neil is him killing himself, Mr. Keating told them, “ ‘….what good amid these O me...

Dead Poet Society

...Film i Engelsk Bilag 1a FILM ANALYSIS – an introduction (Source: http://www.filmeducation.org) – bearbejdet af Mi og LK, Favrskov Gymnasium Reading a film is just like reading a book, except that instead of looking at a written page we are looking at the cinema screen. Reading a film works in exactly the same way as a written text, or a picture, except that the tools that are used to create meaning are different. We call these tools film language. The opening sequence From the moment we first start watching a film, we begin to get involved. The first few minutes of a film (the opening sequence) are very important to us as they give us lots of clues about the film: 1) what will the film be about (conflicts/themes); 2) who are the most important characters (hero, villain, love interest); 3); what is the setting of the film (time and place); 4) the genre; and finally, 5) what sort of film language characterizes the film? We look at all these elements and begin to put them into context. Based on their environment, how they look, what they say and what we see them do, we make assumptions about the characters, their roles in the film and their relationship to each other. We also recognize so-called genre markers (things we associate with one particular genre) which tell us if we are watching a Western or a Sc-Fi film and, thus, form specific expectations about what is going to happen during the rest of the film. At the same time, we listen to the sounds and the music...
