Deception In Dracula

The Art of Deception in Dracula "Be not deceived with the first appearance of things, for show is not substance" (English Proverb). Abraham Stoker, the author of Dracula, initially presents Count Dracula as a man of nobility, moral decency, and kindness. However, as Jonathan Harker learns more about Dracula, he discovers the otherworldliness, deceptiveness, and cruel intentions of Dracula. Stoker illustrates the Count in this manner to remove the disguise of the Victorian era. From 1837 to 1901, the people of London, England cloaked themselves with wealth, peace, and confidence through their expansions of land and population. However, Londoners were corrupt with their expectations of gender and society, while their city was grimy and impoverished. …show more content…
"Dracula presents three types of women... The first includes the passive, virtually asexual, victims; Lucy before her initiation by Dracula... The second category, clearly modeled on women in Dracula's castle and Lucy after her transformation, includes the ravenous and sensual vampire-brides... Last are the fully developed human beings who defy our attempts to categorize them: Mina" (Senf). The three women Jonathan Harker encounters in Dracula's castle are an antithesis to the traditional Victorian woman. Stoker characterizes the female vampires in this way to hint that behind every Victorian lady lies a vampiress. Bram Stoker creates a family structure between Dracula and his three brides as a guise to represent similarities in the common Victorian family. "Thomas B. Byers... sees Dracula as the head of the family, the father figure, with his four brides, the three female vampires and eventually Lucy. In keeping with family structure of the day, the father ministered to the needs of the women. He was the sole provider: Dracula" (Welsch 48). Stoker does this to give readers a clear comparison between the behaviors of the typical Victorian woman and female vampires of the novel. Ladies of the Victorian age were taught to suppress their sexual feelings and not be sexually dominant in their

Weird Sisters In Bram Stoker's Dracula

...Weird sisters are seen in many novels, but two famous ones about three supernaturally evil sisters are Dracula and Macbeth. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is about an old vampire coming to London and some vampire hunters trying to track him down. After he kills someone they love, and turns her into a vampire, the hunters realize what is going on, and to try to save their precious woman, Mina, they go on a journey. Their journey is to rid the world of Count Dracula and his vampire girls. Dracula’s vampire girls are three sisters in the book seen in Dracula’s castle. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is about a Thane who gets greedy, and kills to get, and keep the throne. The play then shows and focuses on his guilt from those deeds. During the play, Macbeth becomes fascinated with three witch sisters seen in the beginning by him and Banquo. In...

Victorian Novel Villians and Villianesses

...Clare Whitehead. Write about the ways in which three of the Victorian novels you have read make use of villains and / or villainesses in their plots. The villains and villainesses in the following novels demonstrate the class struggle in society that existed in the Victorian era and that still exists today. The upper class who are described by Marx as ‘the bourgeois’ which (cited in Hamilton) he goes on to describe as; ‘the class of modern capitalists, owners of the means of social production and employers of wage labour’ (1991 p.57) have the power in society. The working class or what Marx refers to as ‘the proletariat’ which (cited in Hamilton) he goes on to describe as; ‘the class of modern wage labourers who having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling labour power in order to live’ (1991 p.57) are controlled by this power which often leaves them vulnerable to the rich. Furthermore, the villains and villainesses appear to be used in order to demonstrate the ‘inequalities of the rich and the poor’ (Eagleton 1996 p.200). The wealth of the ‘bourgeois’ gives them access to many privileges and opportunities that the poor can never have access to. In the first novel Jane Eyre (Bronte 1847) Mrs Reed highlights the selfish nature of the wealthy. She speaks of Jane as ‘such a burden to be left on my hands’ (1992 p.203) because she has no wealth of her own. Mrs Reed sees her as one of ‘social inferiority’ (Nunokawa cited in David 2001 p.145) who is of...

Vampire Diaries

Smith Contents Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter ThreeChapter Four Chapter FiveChapter Six Chapter Seven Chapter Eight Chapter NineChapter Ten Chapter ElevenChapter Twelve Chapter ThirteenChapter Fourteen Chapter FifteenChapter Sixteen "Are you having a good time?" Elena asked. I am now. Stefan didn't say it, but Elena knew it was what he was thinking. She could see it in the way he stared at her. She had never been so sure of her power. Except that actually he didn't look as if he were having a good time; he looked stricken, in pain, as if he couldn't take one more minute of this. The band was starting up, a slow dance. He was still staring at her, drinking her in. Those green eyes darkening, going black with desire. She had the sudden feeling that he might jerk her to him and kiss her hard, without ever saying a word. "Would you like to dance?" she said softly. I'm playing with fire, with something I don't understand, she thought suddenly. And in that instant she realized that she was frightened. Her heart began to pound violently. It was as if those green eyes spoke to some part of her that was buried deep beneath the surface—and that part was screaming "danger" at her. Some instinct older than civilization was telling her to run, to flee. She didn't move. Don't miss these exciting books from HarperPaperbacks! THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: A TRILOGY L. J. Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...
