At Lund International, our brands, and the products under them, are the focus of everything we do. And it shows. It shows in more than 150 product lines we offer, in the care and craft we put into every product we introduce, and in our tireless commitment to leadership and innovation (2008; Lund International).
Lund International has chosen to branch their products Internationally with the main location being the country of Kava. Once we landed in Kava we realized this country was not as we had pictured it. Kava appeared to be a mess which could cause problems with branching Lund products.
I arrived at the office to meet Alex who would be my boss and mentor but to my surprise the office was also a mess which now raised doubts about how successful this task would be. Alex was a one man show. There was no receptionist only Alex so it was clear that Alex and I would be a two man team, I guess you could say we were short staffed.
As Alex was briefing me on the facts about Kava I realized there were numerous problems that would certainly cause problems for us. The population of Kava consisted of 50% of the individuals were under the age of 15 as well as several different languages including English, Spanish and French. Another fact was the economy being mostly petroleum, coffee, cocoa, spices, bananas, tourism, fishing and natural gas which proved there was not much competition in the truck accessory field. This normally would be a great thing but considering that over half the population being under the age of 15 we had to question what kind of need there would be for truck accessories.

The main concern to us was that the country of Kava had numerous disaster threats including Tidal waves, tsunami, typhoons, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes etc. These disasters were the main cause of why Kava was so unappealing. Now with all of this in mind I admitted to Alex that we had our work cut out for us.
In order for Alex and I to succeed, we must put a plan together starting with connecting the dots meaning, bringing scattered pieces of information into some proximity to each other to enable pattern recognition. In order to connect the dots, we must collect the dots. As we collect the information, we will try to make sense of it in some way, so that we can interpret new or revised information in order to start putting our plan into motion (2007; September 2). From our research, we are aware that the majority of the population (over 50%) is under the age of 15. Many native languages are spoken on the island as well as English, Spanish and French. The core economy on Kava is based on petroleum, coffee, cocoa, spices, bananas, sugar, tourism, fishing and natural gas. Also, the island has an abundance of inexpensive, quality labor. The two key benefits I see in the available resources are the multi-lingual inhabitants as well as the inexpensive, quality labor (2007; September 2). There are also challenges that we must deal with. Kava has been faced with numerous natural disasters recently. Tidal waves, typhoons, tornadoes, floods, fires, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes constantly threaten the island. In addition to the natural disasters, Kava’s inhabitants are at high risk to contract HIV and the avian flu. And as is the case throughout the world now, terrorism is also a threat. These factors present challenges, but from what I have seen from the company so far, Lund International is not a company to back down easily (2007; September 2). Alex and I sat down to discuss the information that we have gathered so far. We know that our office on Kava is limited to a mobile home on the property of a current employee. Study shows the island has a stable structure. Organizations are available for assistance such as community and faith based. According to research the government is organized into local, state and national levels and these levels also maintain the military. An advantage in this country is the fact that the government has a desire for us to expand to their island. The government believes the expansion of the truck industry will strengthen the community.

The organization markets to governments, consumers, businesses, and schools worldwide. Hewlett-Packard strategy is to bring the depth, breadth, advantages, competitiveness, and innovation of the company portfolio to consumers in every country (Hewlett-Packard Development Company (2012). Nik has been assigned to assess the potential benefits of conducting business in Kava, a small island country that resides in the South Pacific. After Nik landed on the island of Kava, he realized that his perception of the island was not what he had perceived it to be. However, Nik was sent to Kava to complete a mission; not to enjoy a vacation. The geographic location of Kava presented an issue that could pose as a reoccurring threat. Based on the location of the island, there is no way Kava can avoid the threats of floods, tsunamis, typhoons, and cyclones. Although Kava is an island, fires have occurred in the community. Kava’s community also suffers from avian flu and HIV/AIDS. The threats on the island may pose danger to the locals as well as the entire island. Damages caused by tsunami’s and typhoon’s...

...Decisions in Paradise, Part 1 John Jones MGT/350 July 28, 2011 Professor Jacobs Decisions in Paradise, Part 1 There are many obstacles that you encounter when trying to expand your growing business into an island in the South Pacific. The island of Kava has many issues because of many disasters that have taken place over the past few years. Over half of the population is under the age of 15. This age issue exists because of the diseases that are present in Kava. There has been widespread illness due to HIV and the high risk of the avian flu. There are some religious differences due to having a fairly diverse set of beliefs on the island. There is a strong ethnic mix that includes indigenous South Pacific tribes, French, African, Spanish, Asian (mostly Chinese), and since the 1940’s, a large amount of Americans. There is a language barrier that consists of the indigenous dialect, English, Spanish, and French. The economy is comprised of trade of coffee, spices, cocoa, bananas, sugar, natural gas, and petroleum. There is also tourism and fishing in Kava. The labor on Kava is high in quality, but also it is inexpensive. Many natural disasters have impacted the country, such as tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. ...Decisions in Paradise Business Scenario Vanita Lash University of Phoenix MGT/350 Professor Courtney Wilson March 12, 2012 Plan for Kava Part 1 Organizational processes Inadequate organization structure and work processes may hinder an organization from accomplishing their goals. The first task that needs to be addressed is focusing on the customer. The company needs to gather information on their target customers. An example would be finding out what are the target age ranges, gender, and economic class that the company will be catering to. Once the company has the information the next step is finding a way to supply their target customers with the product or service that they need. Once the product or service is determined, the company has to find a way to supply the service or product at a better rate than their competitors. Planning plays a key role in the organizational process. As stated by (Strategic planning-the basic idea, 2012) “The process is about planning because it involves intentionally setting goals and developing an approach to achieving those goals.  The process is disciplined in that it calls for a certain order and pattern to keep it focused and productive.” Asking questions is another critical aspect of the organizational process. An example would be asking “what is the most significant problem that needs to be solved first?” Once the organization knows what problem they...

As with many things in my life, things are not always what you imagine them to be. My perception of what Kava was going to be like was nothing like the reality of Kava, as with my co-worker Alex. The issues that face us in this journey is getting Kava the communication services it needs to be a productive island, which would conceivably bring in more tourism and secure Kava’s future. The issues that Alex and I are faced with are many. To start out with, the disaster threats alone are enough to make you reconsider any business at this location. These disasters range from tsunami’s, tornadoes, floods, fires, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. Manmade threats such as HIV/AIDs, avian flu, and petroleum spills are also issues we will have to deal with. However, my company is dedicated to helping communities and providing them with quality telephone and internet service, no matter how rural the area is. One obstacle that we will face while building a new infrastructure in Kava is finding ways to have our technology installed and resistant to or as resistant as possible to the threats that face Kava. I just graduated from college with my degree and I am really happy I landed a job in a solid organization. During the first week at BD, I received the overview of the company along with HR procedures, organizational processes, an overview of Kava, and flight arrangements. The second week I will fly to Kava and no one could tell me what I would be doing there. I will work with Alex, the director of strategic planning and Chris Morales will be helping us out. ...residents, which will be done through profit allocation. To promote new businesses in the economy, the government of Kava puts forth incentives like tax breaks and licensing at low costs. Thus, now is the perfect time to bring this plan to fruition. Sikorsky Aircraft already is a player in the global market, and I assert that a Kav’ian subsidiary would be a smart investment. In recent years, Kava has experienced multiple natural disasters. As a result, the community has been ravaged and many families are now experiencing poverty. Sikorsky’s production facility there would give job opportunities to the local people: they could work in the low-level line production jobs that would help the production of the standard H-60 Black Hawk airframe. Part of the profits that would be earned thanks to the cut in labor costs would be dedicated to a revival for the local community. Sikorsky plans to make contributions to community centers, improved housing, disaster relief, activities, and the educational system. Of course, some organizational obstacles block the path of a successful establishment of a Sikorsky Aircraft facility on Kava. The most noteworthy obstacle is the gap in education between the residents’ knowledge of the construction of helicopter frames, and what would be necessary for them to know so that their finished product would be a quality one. It is fortuitous that the residents of...
