The decline in Convention and Exhibition Industry

With well-facilitated exhibition halls, multi-purpose halls, theaters and meeting rooms, Hong Kong is crowned as a giant of organizing international events and conferences. There are numerous conventions and exhibitions held in Hong Kong every year ranging from Mipim Asia, HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair to Hong Kong International Jewelry Manufacturers' Show. Given the regular and occasional exhibitions and conferences held in Hong Kong, Convention and Exhibition Industry seems to be extraordinarily successful at first glance. However, recent newspaper clips and figures provided by the authority shows that Convention and Exhibition Industry is declining bit by bit.

The Industry of Convention and Exhibition in the territory is beset with myriad problems which prevents such industry from being premier and cause the industry to decline. The decline in Convention and Exhibition Industry can be ascribed to internal and external factors. Regards to the internal one, it would be low competitive edge of its own. For the external one, the threat of surrounding competition would be taken into consideration. The following paragraphs would be the examination of internal and external problems while a series of solutions to the issues would be further provided.

Regarding to the internal factor, its low competitive edge has brought Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Industry a heavy slump. Although we are told that the infrastructures of conventions and exhibitions are well-furnished and are praised as “preferred location in holding conventions and exhibits”, the shortage of land would be a challenge to the industry. In the light of accommodating a large number of guests such as visitors, exhibitors, businessmen, sufficient spaces would be in need. Meanwhile, the industry faces the shortfall in human resources.
