In today’s organizations, there is more pressure than ever to remain competitive. One way to ensure an organization remains competitive is to remain innovative through creativity and design. This paper will define the terms creativity, design, and innovation as well as detail how these concepts can have implications on an organization.
Creativity, Design, and Innovation Defined Creativity, design, and innovation are commonly used terms in today’s business world. These coined terms are heard in the boardrooms, in the staff meetings, and in the marketing and advertising campaigns, so it is important to understand their meaning.
Creativity
Creativity is coming up with ideas and is the essential building block of innovation. Use of force or mandate does not allow for creativity, as creativity is usually a product of intuition. Following the creation of a new idea, the implementation takes place.
Design
Design can be defined as “the conscious decision-making process by which information is transformed into an outcome, be it tangible or intangible” (Stamm, 2003, p. 12). Essentially, design is taking the idea from the creativity stage and making it become reality. The successful implementation of a creative design then becomes innovation.
Innovation
Once the idea has been made, and the process by which to implement the idea has been designed, then the product or service has arrived at innovation. Stamm’s defines innovation as “the art of making new connections, and continuously challenging the statues quo – without changing for change sake” (2003, p. 7). Stamm further mentions that innovation is a state of mind, not an action.
Application in the Business World Innovation is the product of successful implementation of a creative idea. Staying innovative in today’s marketplace is more necessary than ever. Allowing creativity in the workplace is the building block of becoming and staying innovative. This can be accomplished by having an encouraging atmosphere for employees as well as support through training. Once a creative idea has been born, the design and implementation should begin. The goal of the design is to develop a successful implementation. When a good idea is successfully implemented, an innovative product or service is born. Innovation can come to the marketplace in several forms such as (a) new-to-the-world products, (b) line extensions, (c) me-too products, and (d) product modifications (Stamm, 2003).
• New-to-the-world products – is introducing a new product or service to the world. An example of a new-to-the-world product was the concept of digital music when the iPod first hit the market.
• Line extensions –is introducing a new product or service to the marketplace but not a product or service that is new to the company. An example of a line extension is when McDonalds first opened a franchise in Israel. McDonald’s has been a round for years, but only hit the marketplace in Israel in the late 1990’s.
• Me-too products –is a product or service that is new to the company but not new to the marketplace. An example of a me-to-product is the Dell DJ Ditty. This is an MP3 player, which was designed, and market by Dell to compete with the iPod. Dell did not develop the idea of digit music on a compact piece of equipment, but they took the creative idea of Apple and designed their own digit music player.
• Product modification – is taking an existing product or service and modifying it into something more innovative and improved. An example of a product modification is also the iPod. The iPod originally came to the market as s digital music player. Through several redesigns, the iPod now has an external speaker, a camera, can stream video, and many other new improved features.
Each of these innovation forms is important o keeping the business world progressing and improving.
Conclusion
Creativity is an idea, which is put into process by design and once implemented, become innovation. Through the definitions and examples provided in this paper, it is easy to believe and understand the important of creativity, design, and innovation in the business world. Without new ideas, and all levels and categories of innovation, the world would cease to evolve and improve.

Market Definition Paper

...Definition of marketing One could pose a simple request like “Define Marketing” and you would have a barrage of answers as unique as the individual defining the word. For this paper I will present two definitions, as well as present my personal definition or understanding of the marketing. To begin, Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines marketing as “the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). This definition is clear and pretty simple to comprehend. Next, the class textbook, Marketing Management, defines marketing as “the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals” (Kotler, 2012). This definition lends a more academic view, but still is comprehendible and simply stated. After reading and reviewing the above definitions, I have come to my own personal definition. Marketing, as defined by Carla Posey, is the process which encompasses everything involved with the purchasing and selling of services and goods. This includes all work and research to effectively satisfy the needs and wants of the consumer. Importance of Marketing Marketing is important because it is the little voice to the consumer that says “hello, I know you need me and I want to give it to you”. A successful company has caught your attention and you have shown appreciation by buying into that brand. This......

...Definitions Paper Kathy Meadows ECO365 February 14, 2013 Tarron Khemraj Definitions Paper Economics What is economics? “Economics is the study of how human beings coordinate their wants and desires, given the decision-making mechanisms, social customs, and political realities of the society” (Colander, page 4). Three main problems that need to be solved in the economy are what and how much to produce, how to actually produce it, and whom is it being produced for. Of course we all want more that can be produced, which causes a scarcity of the products. Microeconomics What is microeconomics? “Microeconomics is the study of individual choice, and how that choice is influenced by economic forces (Colander, page 15)”. In other words, it is the study of how companies’ price their merchandise, whether or not I should buy something, what resources are going to be needed. Opportunity cost is associated with microeconomics, and is the benefit that you can get if you choose an alternative. For example, if I spend all my time on homework then I will have less time to watch television. The invisible hand theorem is also associated with microeconomics, through price mechanism. Basically, when quantity supplied or demanded is greater than what is available, the prices will rise or fall. Law of Supply What is the law of supply? “The law of supply is based on substitution and the expectation of profits (Colander, page 90)”. Supply is the mirror image of......

...Definition Paper Heather Spencer OI 361 October 23, 2014 Reanna Smith-Hamblin Definition Paper This paper will compare and contrast the topics of innovation, design and creativity. The importance of these three topics in meeting organizational objectives is innovation creates new technology and ideas. Design is important to meeting organizational objectives because design is the way products are made. Without design, nothing could be produced. Creativity is important to meeting organizational objectives because without creativity, no new products or services could be offered to customers. This could hurt any business profit that suffers from a lack of creativity. Innovation is defined by Dictionary.com as “something new or different introduced” (Dictionary.com, 2014). Innovation is important to any business that strives to be successful. Innovation brings new technology and new life into business. The down side of innovation could be the unwillingness of people to change. Some people could resist the changing of business and procedures, therefore, blocking innovation. People need to be approached in gentle ways that show the business and procedures are changing for the better and their job and job security are more secure with these changes. “Design is the conscious decision-making process by which information (an idea) is transformed into an outcome, be it tangible (product) or intangible (service) (Stamm, 2003). ...Definitions Paper Stephanie Martinez OI/361 September 6, 2011 Dr. Baron Smith Definitions Innovation, design and creativity in businesses today are crucial in keeping our competitive edge. Utilizing creative people and their ideas allows us to move forward in any area of industry. I will define each concept in their business implications, and compare and contrast all three. Creativity is explained by the text Managing Innovation (2003) “creativity is not something where someone who has never worked in that field suddenly gets this marvelous idea. Creativity is relating a concept to a particular body of knowledge. The existing body of knowledge is as vital as the novel idea and really creative people spend years and years acquiring and refining their knowledge base-be it music mathematics, arts, sculpture or design” (pg1). Creative people have certain traits and personalities. Having a team of creative people is important because one person may not have all the needed traits. Creative Intelligence (2004) supported the idea that “personality is a major factor contributing to the success of productive creative people. Identified are the following key personality attributes that contribute to creativity; being imaginative, having insight or intuition, being open and perceptive, being willing to take risks, and having a high tolerance for ambiguity”. Innovation is defined in the textbook Managing Innovation (2003) as creativity and implementation combined.......

Globalization is a historical process that began first began 100,000 years ago when the first group of humans moved out of Africa into other parts of the world. These individuals traveled throughout Europe and brought their customs, ideas, and beliefs with them. 50,000 years after that a second group arrived in Asia. The agents of globalization in its early stages were made up of traders, preachers, adventurers, and soldiers. The desire to improve the lifestyle in various countries is what initiated the first trade agreements in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. ...has been estimated that every year there are about 3.3 to 10 million children exposed to domestic violence in the confines of their own home (Moylan, Herrenkohl, Sousa et al. 2009). According to research conducted by John W. Fantuzzo and Wanda K. Mohr(1999): “exposure to domestic violence can include watching or hearing the violent events, direct involvement (for example, trying to intervene or calling the police), or experiencing the aftermath (for example, seeing bruises or observing maternal depression)” (Fantuzzo &ump; Mohr, 22). The effects of exposure can vary from direct effects such as behavioral and developmental issues to interpersonal relationships, all of which lead to detrimental prospects on the child’s development. This paper will explore those effects and how it affects children.  Exposure to violence in the first years of life brings about helplessness and terror which can be attributed to the lack of protection received by the parent. The child can no longer trust their parent as a protector (Lieberman 2007). This lack of trust early in life can bring about serious problems later in life, as there is no resolution to the first psychosocial crisis, trust vs. mistrust. For these children exposed to domestic violence, the imaginary monsters that children perceive are not only symbolic representations or a dream. The monsters that children who witness domestic violence have to deal with carry the reflection of their parents. Children who witness......

Term Definition Paper

...Term Definition Paper Term Definition Paper Economics, similar to any part of analysis, has its’ own vocabulary. It's important to know the vocabulary, the philosophy behind it, as well as the effect or importance it has to our daily lives. For instance, some economical principles to concentrate on which can provide details to the state of the economy are: gross domestic product, real gross domestic product, joblessness rate, inflation rate, and rate of interest. Knowing the present economical conditions and just how that influences different markets can be challenging. But, using a few of these economical concepts or principals might help a person know the present economical situations. Additionally, having knowledge of the connection between companies, families, and government in the economical cycle is essential. The vocabulary of economics is complicated, full of vocabulary and ideas which can appear as foreign as language of distant tradition. For that reason, an overview of some fundamental economical principles and vocabulary is essential. To begin with, is gross domestic product, that is “the value of all finished services and goods produced inside a country’s borders in a particular time period” (“GDP“, p. 1). Together with gross domestic product is a similar expression used known as real gross domestic product. Real gross domestic product is just the worth of gross domestic product revised for inflation as well as deflation. The reason behind this adjusting......

Term Definition Paper

...Term Definition Paper Gross domestic Product GDP is a measure of a country’s economic output. It is the market value of all final goods and services made in the borders of a country within a year. It is often positively correlated with the standard of living, alternative of measures to gross domestic product for that purpose. (Colander, 2008). There are four parts to Gross Domestic Product: consumption, investment, government spending and net exports. Consumption is people spending money on goods or services, investment is different than normal investing it doesn’t mean investing in stocks or bonds; it actually means that businesses are spending money on factories and equipment for production. Government spending is money the government spends on goods and services. Net exports are when foreigner spends money on goods and services that are made in the United States. Workplace Definition Paper

...Workplace Definition Paper: Being a Doctor A doctor is a person trained in the art of healing and certified to practice. A doctor can be a physician, veterinarian, physician, or dentist. For many years, a doctor has been one of the most revered members of society. Sages of native tribes were respected for their comprehension of the healing art. The general practitioner not only treated patients but also offered guidance and counseling. That seems to have changed in our today’s society. The relationship between a doctor and a patient represents a personal contact between two exclusive individuals. Good doctors care about their patients. Doctors must talk and pay attention to their patients. The tool bag of a doctor cannot miss a pressure cuff, which is used for taking blood, a tape measure, a patella hammer used for checking reflexes, an otoscope for checking ears, and a stethoscope used for listening to body sounds. As expected doctors interact with patients and as such the communication or language between them is vital. The social distance between a patient and a doctor should be greater than that of a secretary and a manager. A secretary and a manager are individuals who normally work together on a regular basis, and in fact, in many offices, contact between them is often friendly or even informal. On the contrary, a patient and a doctor have less regular contact. Moreover, a doctor has a prevailing position compared to the patient. A doctor can......

What Is Philosophy?

...Reaction Paper #1 Cryptic is defined as having a hidden meaning, and as I have quickly learned, philosophy is a very mystifying subject and is open to a wide variety of interpretation. Due to this obscurity, each person will have a different view on philosophy and will likely have changing opinions and views as they continue on their path. Heidegger describes this path as one of responding to life. More specifically, “responding to the voice of Logos which he defines as the Being of all beings, One, One which is all, Life.” As previously stated, this is a very cryptic definition that takes much deeper thought than simply reading off the page.   Despite being cryptic, this vague definition gives a strong guideline to the basic idea of philosophy while still giving the reader an opportunity to interpret the definition in their own way. This definition shines light on both the basic idea of philosophy while also showing that everyone will interpret philosophy in their own way. By saying that philosophy is the One which is all, it shows that each individual person makes up a greater being which is Life. Each individual person provides their own interpretation based on their own lifestyle and past. Therefore, philosophy is the sum of all lives that can only be defined with the sum of everybody’s views and opinions. With this is mind, philosophy will be ever changing as people grow older and more people are brought into the world. What is most important about this definition......

Independence Trait for Accoutant

...This short paper will cover the trait of independence, and it will answer a few questions posed to look at the trait of independence from a few different angles. These angles include personal definitions of the trait and how a person should be able to demonstrate that trait. The paper will cover how the AICPA looks at Independence, how the State of Texas vies this trait, and a look at a current article showing the impacts of the trait independence. Upon the conclusion of this paper the reader will have a better understanding of how independence in accounting is defined and how to identify it As we see defined in our class text on page 162 is that independence is defined as, "the state of mind that permits the performance of an attest service without being affected by influences that compromise professional judgment, thereby allowing an individual to act with integrity and professional skepticism. To appear to be independent, the CPA should avoid circumstances that might cause an informed third party to reasonably conclude that the integrity, objectivity, or professional skepticism of a firm or member of the audit (attest) engagement team has been compromised." Within the frame work of my own personal definition I define independence as having the ability to have both the personal courage and institutional ability to analyze, state conclusions, and act in the best interests of the public. As pulled from http://www.tsbpa.state.tx.us/firms/alt-business-structure.html......
