Telecommunications Industry

...The telecommunications field is a vast field that contains terms and acronyms which can be confusing to those who are not familiar with the terminology. Therefore, the following paragraphs will compare and explain some common terms used when referring to the telecommunications field and will entail some old technology with some new. To be included within the discussion is comparisons of telephone dialing sounds, Wide Area Telecommunications Services (WATS) versus leased lines, Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) or Centrex, and the International Organization for Standardization-Open Systems Interconnection (ISO-OSI) model. What are the differences between Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-frequency (DTMF)? Rotary dialed phones were round and "spun" to make a phone call. The disk had the numbers 0-9 and one had to place a finger in the hole next to the number they wanted to select and turn the dial completely around then let go. When the disk spun back to its original position it would create a series of frequency pulses that corresponded to the number dialed and was known as "pulse dialing." The phone company switching network would recognize the number of "clicks or pulses' sent and would switch to the appropriate line. On the other hand DTMF uses a "tone dialing' method to place a call. A push button phone uses the "tone" method of dialing. Each time a number button is pushed on the phone, the circuitry in the phone makes a two toned sound for each number and sends that sound to the...

(Sheldon, 2001) The Regional Bell operating companies are important to telecommunication because they remove the monopoly that the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) had and they provided the fixed line, wireless and data service to the subscribers. The Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC) is a local telephone company in the United States that was in existence at the time of the breakup of AT&T into the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs). (Unknown, Incumbent local exchange carrier, 2012) This ILEC was providing local service when the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was enacted. The Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier is important to telecommunication because they were the established providers of telephone access. The Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC) is companies that are known to provide an alternative service to the RBOCs within its territory. CLECs compete against the RBOCs in the local service areas. ...who direct or provide services to those with disabilities emphasized to Congress the importance of technology and support services in technology for people with disabilities.Access to information technology is critical in employment and education for people who are blind. The Telecommunications Act of 1996, a comprehensive law overhauling regulation of the telecommunications industry, recognizes the importance of access to telecommunications for people with disabilities in the Information Age. Section 255 of the Act requires telecommunications products and services to be accessible to people with disabilities. This must be easily accomplishable, without much difficulty or expense. If manufacturers cannot make their products accessible then they must design products to be compatible with adaptive equipment used by people with disabilities, where readily achievable. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released Sept. 29 new rules that are designed to give greater access to telecommunications technologies to the disabled. The rules and policies, serving to implement the Telecommunications Act of 1996, will require manufacturers of telecommunications equipment and providers of telecommunications services to accommodate the needs of the disabled whenever possible. The introduction to the report on the new rules states that they "are the most significant opportunity for the advancement of people with disabilities since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in...

...Members: Anthony Combes Jerick Angeles Industry: Telecommunications I. Introduction Telecommunications is a universal term that is used for a vast range of information-transmitting technologies such as mobile phones, land lines, VoIP and broadcast networks. It is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, especially in the developing countries. It is a process where in an exchange of information occurs by means of electronic and electrical over a distance. An example of a complete arrangement of this process is that, it is made up of two or more stations provided each with transmitter and receiver devices. There is this so called transceiver, a single co-arrangement of transmitters and receivers that may also be used by telecommunication stations. In telecommunications, information is passed through forms of electrical signals which are the carrier waves that are modulated into analog or digital signals for transmitting information. Telecommunication all began in Africa, some parts of Asia and the Americas with the use of smoke signals and drums. Until, in the year 1830’s, electrical telecommunication systems started to appear already. E-Learning

...What is eLearning? The teaching and learning methodology is a four-step progressive / recursive design adapted from experiential education theory. Using this methodology, material covered during this training will be systematically presented (Step A), practiced (Step B), assessed (Step C) and reviewed (Step D). Starting at the top of the circle to the right, Step A represents the introduction to new materials such as theory and skills. Progressing to Step B, participants will practice the application of the newly presented materials. Once applied, participants will assess their work in Step C, which will lead to a reflection or review of lessons learned in Step D that will inform and influence the next progressive iteration the learning cycle, beginning with Step A. A full progression of this methodology will be attempted each day of the training event. For example, the first day of this training will focus on the fundamentals of eLearning, where materials will be presented during the initial part of the day (Step A) and learning activities centered on the application of these materials will be conducted during the latter part (Step B). Concluding the day, participants will be asked to assess their understanding of the fundamentals of eLearning (Step C) and to identify questions and unresolved related issues for the next day’s session (Step D). The second day will build on the materials introduced and practiced during the first and will be guided by the participants’ assessment...

Unit 2 Assignment 1

...NT1310 Week 2 – Unit 2 Assignment 1 Service Provider Types There are five different types of telecommunication types to date. First of which is RBOC – (regional bell operating company) which was a telephone company created as a result of the breakup of AT&T. The seven original regional Bell companies were Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, NYNEX, Pacific Bell, Southwestern Bell, and US WEST. The reason why this was so important was because these companies are what provided local telephone service while AT&T provided the long distance phone service. These are what made up the Local Exchanges or the LEC’s. ILEC or incumbent local exchange carrier was a telephone provider that provided local service prior to the telecommunications act of 1996. These play a major role because these carriers are what own the local loops/exchange and facilities in that area. CLEC’s are the exact same thing except they are the competitor to the ILEC’s but provided their own networking and switches for local service. MSO or Multi system Operator – is owner of multiple cable and satellite television systems. This ties into what an ISP is. An ISP is simply and Internet service provider that provides a mean for accessing the internet. MSO is majorly known for being cable companies, because of this cable companies are providing internet to cable customers (usually as bundles with their plan). They work within each other because they...
