Chapter 7: Demand Management, Order Management, and Customer Service
Discussion Questions 1-5

1. What is the relationship between demand management, order management, and customer service?

Demand management
There is a key link between order management and demand forecasting, in that a firm does not simply wait for orders to arrive in order to learn what is happening. Forecasts are made of sales and of the inventories that must be stocked so that the firm can fill orders in a satisfactory manner. There is also a key link between order management and customer service because many organizations analyze customer service standards in terms of the four stages of the order cycle.

2. Discuss the three basic demand forecasting models.

There are three basic types of demand forecasting models: Judgmental, time series, and cause and effect. Judgmental forecasting involves using judgment or intuition and is preferred in situations where there are limited or no historical data, such as with a new product introduction. There is the use of survey forecasting that contains statistical information that helps with judgmental forecasting. Time series forecasting involves a group of forecasting techniques that is based on the idea that future demand is solely dependent on past demand.

3. Discuss several demand forecasting issues.

Demand forecasting issues include the situation at hand, forecasting costs in terms of time and money, and the accuracy of various forecasting techniques. With respect to the situation at hand, judgmental forecasting is appropriate when there is little or no historical data. As for time and money, survey research, for example, can cost a great deal of money and/or also take a great deal of time depending on the media. Forecasting accuracy refers to the relationship between actual and forecasted demand, and accurate forecasts have

Supply and Demand Concepts: Goodlife Management Company

...Supply and Demand Concepts at Work: Goodlife Management Company Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at Work The two microeconomic concepts at work in the simulation were the law of demand and supply. According to the law of demand, more quantities of a product or service will be bought at lower prices than at higher. As the Goodlife Management Company lowered their rental rate, their vacancy rate decreased thus indicating there was an increase in demand as the prices were lowered. According to the law of supply, as the price of a product or service increases, supply of that product or service increases. As the Goodlife Management Company, raised their rental rates, they leased more apartments since they were valued at a higher price. Shifts in the Supply and Demand Curve There was a shift in the demand curve when Lintech Inc. moved their business into the city of Atlantis resulting in an increase in population and thus an increase in demand for Goodlife Management’s apartments. Due to the shift of demand for apartments due to the increase in population, the equilibrium price and quantity will also increase. Thus, Goodlife will lease more apartments at a higher price due to the increase in demand and equilibrium price. There was a shift in the supply curve when Goodlife Management converted some of their two bedroom apartments into condominiums due to the sustained decrease in demand for apartments as the population’s income increased. Due to the shift of supply of apartments...

Yes, I do believe that organizations with proper strategy implemented and managed stand a better chance and have better competitive advantage over their counterparts. Strategic management is used by organizations to analyze and learn from their internal and external environment. It is about going forward (where to from here) It is about establishing a strategic direction. It is about establishing a strategic direction Strategic management is also about implementing strategies that would satisfy customers. The nature of strategy, which needs to be managed, is formulated around the 5 Ps (Louw and Venter 2010:15) Plan, pattern, position, perspective and ploy. As a plan, strategy has been viewed as something that an organization has, and strategy as a perspective viewed as something that people do. Strategy is influenced by extra organizational practices and inter-organizational practices. Therefore there is a reciprocal relationship between intra and extra organizational strategic activities. - Strategy as a plan: Provides overall direction and course of action. As a plan, strategy formulation is a formal process. This approach ahs been criticized for being a rational, top-down approach, hoever research shows that formal planning contributes...

...Demand Side Management Working Group on Power for 12 Plan th Chapter 5 DEMAND SIDE MANAGEMENT ENERGY EFFICIENCY & ENERGY CONSERVATION 5.0 INTRODUCTION Improving the efficiency with which energy is used to provide economic services meets the dual objectives of promoting sustainable development and of making the economy competitive. Energy Efficiency & Conservation has also assumed enhanced importance with a view to conserve depleting energy resources. Over the past one decade energy efficiency in India has been increasing at a good trot, and energy intensity declined by about 20-25%. Yet there are places where energy efficiency opportunities continue to exist largely because of a range of market failures, information, risks and split incentives. This has led the Government of India through the Energy Conservation Act and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to launch several programs. The Energy Conservation Act (2001) is the most important multi-sectoral legislation in India and is intended to promote efficient use of energy in India. The Act specifies energy consumption standards for equipment and appliances, establishes and prescribes energy consumption norms and standards for designated consumers, prescribes energy conservation building code for efficient use of energy in commercial buildings, and establishes a compliance mechanism for energy consumption norms and standards .Large scale energy savings can be realized through strengthening of the existing policies, schemes...

Customer-Facing Supply Chain Practices -- the Impact of Demand and Distribution Management on Supply Chain Success

...and Gernot Kaiser. "Customer-Facing Supply Chain Practices -- The Impact of Demand and Distribution Management on Supply Chain Success." Journal of Operations Management 30.4 (2012): 269-81. Print. Research Classification: The authors of this research performed an empirical based study and outlined three objectives to their study: 1. …to provide empirical evidence of whether or not demand management (DeM) does indeed have such a substantial positive impact on supply chain performance; 2. …the simultaneous evaluation of the impact of customer-facing SCM practices related to both DeM and distribution management (DiM); 3. …the analysis of a potentially existing relationship between DeM and DiM, (p270 et al. 1-3). To meet the objectives of their study, the authors “identif[ied] relevant practices to DeM and DiM” through literature reviews and expert interviews, and from here, the authors created a conceptual model and utilized the partial least squares to test their hypothesis, (p269 -70). Statement of Problem: This journal article aims to examine the “relative impact of relative practices associated with demand and distribution management,” (p 269). Defined by the authors as “…the ability of a company to understand customer demand and requirements and balance them against the capabilities of the supply chain,” demand management (DeM) is becoming more and more popular in the operations management field; however, DeM has not been comprehensively analyzed in terms of supply...

Electricity Demand Side Management (Dsm) in India – a Strategic and Policy Perspective Electricity Demand Side Management (Dsm) in India – a Strategic and Policy Perspective Electricity Demand Side Management in India

...ELECTRICITY DEMAND SIDE MANAGEMENT (DSM) IN INDIA – A STRATEGIC AND POLICY PERSPECTIVE S. PADMANABAN & ASHOK SARKAR Office of Environment, Energy and Enterprise US Agency for International Development, New Delhi, India. Overview The Indian power sector has more than tripled its installed capacity, from 30,000 MW in 1981 to over 100,000 MW in 2001. Despite this growth in supply, its power systems are struggling to overcome chronic power shortages and poor power quality. With demand exceeding supply, severe peak (around 18%) and energy (around 10%) shortages continue to plague the sector. Shortages are exacerbated by inefficiencies in power generation, distribution and end-use systems. The inefficiencies in the end-use systems is due to irrational tariffs, technological obsolescence of industrial processes and equipment, lack of awareness, nascent energy services (ESCO) industry, and inadequate policy drivers (such as energy efficiency standards and labeling system, financial incentives) in India. The elementary problem being faced by the power sector is the poor financial conditions of the State Electricity Boards (SEBs) or successor entities in most states. Over the years, the SEBs have been causing an increasingly larger drain on the State Government budgets, contributing to 10-15% of the state fiscal deficits adversely impacting much needed investments in the social sectors of health and education. The power sector is operating with very low or no returns...

...Recently, more than 150 Chinese citizens in Beijing took part in World Car Free Day by riding bikes to fight against air pollution and traffic jams. A majority of the participants were between 20 and 3o years old who conventionally drove to work. However, the traffic congestion in Beijing was so serious that it wastes myriad of people’s time on their way to work or home. Intending to broadcast the idea of “ green transportation”, the 150 citizens wore green T-shirts and rode around Wangfujing Street is a popular tourist destination. Lots of tourists looked curious and excited when they see the row of people on bicycles and they all came closer to see what was happening. In addition, government officials took part in this campaign by putting up posters that talk about how to live in a green way and assigning policemen to each part of the street. Indeed, World Car Free Day originated in France and launched China in 2007. Congestion Charge

...Congestion has become one of the fundamental problems confronted by big cities. There are those who argue that congestion charge is the most effective way to make alleviate the situation. As I shall argue, reasons why congestion charge can reduce traffic jam will be explained in this essay. According to London transport data (2012), before 2003 more cars went to the central London than buses in the weekday morning peak. After applied congestion charge policy in 2003, the number of people using bus and motorcycle have increased dramatically while the number of people commuting by car have experienced the opposite trend. It is clear that congestion charge has had a positive impact on congestion situation of London. The charge force people to find other environment-friendly vehicles to use such as buses and motorcycles, rather than using cars to go to work (Livingstone, 2008). There are those who maintain that in spite of traffic jam reduction, the congestion charge has brought many disadvantages to the society and economy (Morris, 2008). Firstly, many retailers in the charging zone have faced problem that people tend to go shopping outside city center for their larger purchase. With regard to a report produced by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a quarter of business leaders were thinking of moving their businesses outside the zone. As a result, there will be a big transformation of streets and shops in London and these streets will no longer attract visitors to...

Supply and Demand

...Supply and Demand Goodlife Management was the only firm in Atlantis that rented apartments. This gave Goodlife Management an advantage in the housing market. Detached rental homes owned by Oakridge Builders were the closest substitute to the apartment rentals. Without a substitute for rental housing in the Atlantis area, Goodlife Management maintained a monopoly in this market. Many factors cause changes to the supply and demand of a product or service. Companies need to make adjustments to pricing, supply, and demand to reach the equilibrium. Microeconomics With a vacancy rate of 28% Goodlife Management made the decision to lower the rental rates decreasing the vacancy rate down to 5%. The decision to lower the rental rates also enabled Goodlife Management to increase revenue. This product, two-bedroom apartments, demanded more quantity at a lower price and the supply quantity remained constant. This decision allowed the vacancy rate to decrease, revenue to increase, but still leaving a surplus of 100 apartments not rented. To rent the remaining apartments Goodlife Management would need to reduce the rental rate even more. Macroeconomics The increase in the population of Atlantis after new companies began developing businesses caused an increase in the demand for two-bedroom apartments. Lintech Inc, expanded its operations to Atlantis resulting in the population of Atlantis to increase. The demand has increased and the supply has stayed the same. The rental...

Supply Ad Demand Simulation Paper

...The Supply and Demand Simulation that was taken through the University of Phoenix utilizes the principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics concepts and theories. These concepts and theories are explained and relate to the principle of microeconomics and macroeconomics. The simulation actually presents relative reasons in the supply and demand curve, as well as an explanation for the shift. Each shift in the supply and demand curve is analyzed, which forecasts the effects of equilibrium price, decision making for the company presented and the quantity. The obtained concepts in the simulation will enable me to utilize and apply them to my current workplace. With the explanation of price elasticity, one can understand the effects that demand has on the pricing strategy for consumers and companies and how important a strong strategy is relevant to success. Atlantis is a nice neighborhood within the simulation that has many amenities that consumers look for (University of Phoenix, 2012). The simulation neighborhood of Atlantis utilizes two bedroom apartment rentals to present the effects of supply and demand for potential customers. The simulation also presented many other scenarios that the management company encountered with the two bedroom apartment rentals, such as how the apartment rental price can affect supply and demand while trying to stay competitive in the market of real estate. The simulation utilizes microeconomics concepts to illustrate the reasons for change in...

Supply and Demand

...and the Law of Supply and Demand Microeconomics and the Law of Supply and Demand ECO/365 February 12, 2012 Supply and Demand Simulation This week our facilitator assigned each student to participate in an economics simulation that allowed us to be in control over a property management company, named Good Life Management. In this simulation the student was able to use experimental economics and natural experiments. Atlantis is the city in which Good Life Management operates their seven apartment complexes. Atlantis is also a very desirable place to live, and keeps prices competitive. The simulation changed the economic, social, and political factors, and left the student to determine the correct market price to list the apartments. According to Colander, D. (2010) “Theories, models, and principles must be combined with knowledge of real-world economic institutions to arrive at specific policy recommendations”. Microeconomic and Microeconomics In this simulation there were many examples of how micro and macro economics influenced supply and demand. According to Colander, (2010) “Microeconomics is the study of how individuals choice is influenced by economic forces”. In the first simulation Good Life Management had 2,000 two-bedroom apartments with 28% vacancy rate. At this point the simulations recommendation is to lower the rent amount in order to get 15% vacancy which would maximize revenue for Good Life Management firm. In the simulation...

Supply and Demand Simulation

...Life Management is the premier choice for tenants seeking two bedroom apartments and also is the only choice. Often times in the real estate rental industry rental apartments experience a higher degree of vacancy and Good Life is looking to reduce the vacancy rate from 28% to 15%. Lowering the amount of available units was no easy task for Good Life management and likely would not have been achieved with a solid understand of the principles of the micro and macroeconomics and the supply and demand curve. This simulation has taught the importance of economics and how the play an important part of everyday life. Micro and macroeconomics play a key role in the everyday lives of people and corporations. In the simulation in this weeks assignment Atlantis is a prime example of just how often people come into contact with situations with two important factors of economics. The two important factors are supply and demand and they affect everything that we as people do in everyday life. Understanding supply and demands makes consumers, the supplier and us, determine when it is best to buy and best to sell. Understand this principle enables us to make more informed purchasing and selling decisions. There are a number of real world examples of how micro and macroeconomic principles appear in this weeks assignment simulation, but mostly macroeconomics come into play because it is in the perspective of the business franchise, Good Life Management. Supply and demand are two...
