As many as 20% of teenagers will suffer from depression by the time they reach adulthood (“Teenage”). That is one in five teenagers. Depression does not discriminate between age, race, or even social class. Actress, singer, and songwriter Demi Lovato has suffered from depression. In 2011, Demi was diagnosed with a specific type of depression called bipolar II disorder (“Demi Lovato Recalls…”). Demi Lovato’s story of depression and very successful recovery has brought a voice to many teenagers across the world suffering with similar issues. Demi’s story lets them know that they are not alone and getting help is okay.

Demetria Devonne “Demi” Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Dallas, Texas to parents Patrick and Dianna (DeLaGarza) Lovato (“Biography”). When Demi was 4, her parents divorced and her father is not a really part of her life anymore. Demi participated in beauty pageants, and for the talent portion, she would sing. She began to take singing lessons. To pay for the lessons, Demi began acting at a very young age. Her first role was at the age of six as Angela in “Barney & Friends” (“Biography”). She was still enrolled in public school, but when she was 11 and 12, she was bullied very severely. Students once signed a petition saying, “We hate Demi Lovato,” along with being called fat (“Demi Lovato: Stay…”). It got so bad that she had to drop out of school to be homeschooled by her parents. At age 11, Demi first recalled cutting herself, and at age 12 was when she had begun to purge and eventually developed bulimia (Russo). She kept these issues to herself because she felt shameful that she was suffering with them. She would often eat dinner with her family, then excuse herself to go to the bathroom, only to purge what she had just eaten (Russo).

Demi guest starred in many shows, including “Prison Break,” “Just Jordan,” and “Grey’s Anatomy” (“Biography”). In 2007, she began to work with Disney Channel and was cast as Charlotte Adams in the Disney short “As the Bell Rings” (“Biography”). A few months later, she was cast as Mitchie Torres in the Disney movie “Camp Rock,” opposite the Jonas Brothers. (“Biography”) After the movie premiered, Demi’s career skyrocketed. She was thrust into stardom and became a role model for many young children around the world. Soon after “Camp Rock” premiered, she released her debut album “Don’t Forget” (“Biography”). At this time, her self-harm and bulimia had spiraled out of control, and Demi began to party and experiment with drugs and alcohol. She didn’t feel like she was a role model at that time, because she didn’t believe that anyone should be like her (Russo).

She would receive drugs from clubs and stores so that the store would get publicity from her being there (Russo). She began to spiral out of control. She wouldn’t be able to hold a meal down, she would often do shows on an empty stomach and she was slowly ruining her vocal chords from purging. At one red carpet event, a picture was taken of her and the cuts on her wrist were visible. This photo captured publicity for a short period of time, and then was soon forgotten (Russo).

In 2010, Demi went on a world tour with the Jonas Brothers. Demi’s condition finally got the best of her while on tour, and took out her frustration on one of her back-up singers, getting into a physical altercation with her (Canning). Demi had to cancel the remaining dates of her tour and was checked into Timberline Knolls Treatment Facility in Illinois in October of 2010 (Russo). At first, Demi was reluctant to go because she thought that her fans would turn against her and she would receive ridicule. The outcome was the complete opposite. Demi received much support from her fans and the public eye (Canning). Demi was released from Timberline Knolls in January of 2011, after completing the rehab program.

After being released, she took a break from her career. She eventually completed the album, “Unbroken,” she had been in the process of recording before she entered treatment. The album was released in September of 2011, making it her third and most recent album (Russo). Demi also made appearances on many talk shows such as “20/20,” “GMA,” and “Ellen” to discuss her struggles with bulimia and self-harm (Russo). While on the shows, she would promote recovery. She would send positive messages to her fans, called “Lovatics,” by telling them that they are beautiful and deserve to life a happy life.

She scheduled a headlining tour, and while on this tour, she began filming for her documentary “Demi Lovato: Stay Strong” (“Biography”). Her documentary premiered March 6, 2012 on MTV. She wanted to document her post-treatment life, and to bring awareness to such taboo topics as eating disorders and self-harm (Russo). Demi is very vocal about the issues she suffers from, and lets people know that they are not alone. She goes into intimate detail of her struggles and how she is able to cope with them. She discusses her daily battle with food and how difficult it is for her to feel good about herself. She also talks about her recovery and visits the treatment facility she was in for three months to talk to the girls that were in there for similar issues.

Demi is continuing her ever-growing career by scheduling a tour for summer 2012 and recently signed on to be a judge on “X-Factor USA” with Britney Spears, Simon Cowell, and LA Reid (“Biography”). Demi Lovato uses her voice, not only for singing, but also to raise awareness. The awareness she has brought to these very serious issues have saved so many young lives by letting teens know that they are not alone.

...Skyscraper Lyrics by Demi Lovato Skies are crying, I am watching Catching teardrops in my hands Only silence, as it's ending, like we never had a chance. Do you have to make me feel like, there's nothing left of me? You can take everything I have  You can break everything I am Like I'm made of glass Like I'm made of paper Go on and try to tear me down I will be rising from the ground Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper As the smoke clears I awaken and untangle you from me Would it make you feel better to watch me while I bleed All my windows, still are broken, but I'm standing on my feet You can take everything I have  You can break everything I am Like I'm made of glass Like I'm made of paper Go on and try to tear me down I will be rising from the ground Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper Go run run run I'm gonna stay right here Watch you disappear yeah Go run run run yeah it's a long way down But I'm closer to the clouds up here You can take everything I have You can break everything I am Like I'm made of glass Like I'm made of paper Ohh Go on and try to tear me down I will be rising from the ground Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper Like a skyscraper Skies are crying, I am watching Catching teardrops in my hands Only silence, as it's ending, like we never had a chance. Adversity

...who we are. So consequently adversity plays a crucial role in developing a person’s character. In Richard Rodriguez’s Hunger of Memory, Rodriguez is left feeling socially disadvantaged from his inability to speak English. He also had Mexican immigrants as a child which coupled with all his other “disadvantages” led him to be studious. He became distant from his family and chose to become a student, looking towards teachers for role models. Without this disadvantage adversity, he wouldn’t have realized his true potential as a student and writer. Those who truly experience pain and misfortune and are willing to work to improve their life will be much more motivated, which in the end leads them to newly discovered abilities. For example, Demi Lovato, the Disney star, also singer was bullied all throughout her childhood. She was constantly ridiculed for being overweight and having an eating disorder. Up until now she is still terrorized by the crude comments made by the world. As a way to express herself she began communicating...

Positioning and Differentiation with Health Care Organizations

...Positioning and Differentiation with Health Care Organizations Two health care organizations located in the same area are Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and City of Hope Research Hospital, both in Los Angeles. Both facilities cater to and are championed by Hollywood celebrities, so in many respects they are similar. Their positioning and differentiation is distinctive in other respects, however. This paper will examine the positioning and differentiation of both organizations, noting their similarities and differences. Cedars-Sinai can boast that “Many a star has been born, literally” there (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008). Its location, “where Los Angeles meets Beverly Hills and West Hollywood,” ensures that it serves movie stars and other Hollywood celebrities, and this visibility prompts exceptional care (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008). In addition to its star-studded patient list, the hospital is also known for being a teaching and research hospital that has approximately 600 different research programs (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008). Even its Board of Directors boasts such notables as Steven Spielberg and Sherry Lansing, and it enjoys celebrity supporters such as Barbra Streisand, Denzel Washington, Mel Gibson, and others (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008; “Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” n.d.). Cedars-Sinai’s positioning and differentiation are both related to its celebrity image. It has positioned itself as the hospital to the stars by extending...

...Princess Rosalinda (Demi Lovato) of the small Spanish-speaking nation of Costa Luna is about to be crowned queen upon reaching maturity. Inexplicably, General Kane, the dictator of a neighboring country (Costa Estrella), is able to massively infiltrate her palace with his agents during her coronation rehearsal, and attempts to assassinate her while effecting a coup d'etat against her regime. Luckily, Joe Mason, an agent of the Princess Protection Program, a secret organization funded by royal families that looks after endangered princesses, is able to whisk her away to safety via helicopter because Gen. Research Proposal

...Joneice Butler 26 September 2011 Eng. 112-01 Research Proposal Writing Have you ever had a topic that touch’s you deep inside your heart? Have you ever had that feeling like you tried to help but nothing works, as if you have no say at all? The topic that I would like to discuss in class would be child depression. This is a touchy topic to me because I am dealing with it right now with my little sister, it is a serious issue that most parents or teachers feel as though it isn’t a serious thing but it can lead to multiple other types of issue such as suicide and bullying. As a little girl she only grew up with my mother and I and her dad was in jail for about 8 years of her life so she never had a father figure. Then when she was 10 he got out of jail, he wasn’t really there that much as she hoped but she was willing to accept it. Then her 8th grade year he went back to jail and that hurt her a lot, because she was losing him all over again. That was when her attitude started to change then my first year of college she became depressed and never wanted to talk to anyone about her feelings. She felt as though everyone was leaving her and her and my mom weren’t the closest. When I came back for Christmas break that was when my mom told me that my sister had been cutting herself on her stomach and wrist and she had been seeing a therapist since I left for school. When I heard that it made me break down crying because no child should feel that way or do that kind of stuff to...

Biggest Fear

...Life is full of battles and battles are a choice. The choice could either be good or bad. A good choice takes more courage; good courage grows into good memories. The farther life goes the more questions appear. A bad choice can be as simple as one little mistake on a test when a person is in a classroom, full of students typing away, and this one student is in a state of panic because their grade is depended upon it. Every person is full of courage, and courage determines a person’s character. Courage comes from friends and also from foes. Look at Demi Lovato’s song called “I Really Don’t Care”. This song is about a breakup but it can be about any loss and overcoming. Courage sprouts from inspiration. Inspiration can come from anyone, anywhere, or anything. The more you live the more courage it takes and that is just how life goes. Life is not just a representation of emotions but it is a way of dealing with circumstances of the emotion. The monster that I have battled was moving from Connecticut to South Carolina. When I moved, it felt like one of the worst things that could have ever happen to me. I felt like my life was over. I can tell you that I was the person that took it the hardest. I had to leave my friends, my school, my neighbors, my church and my old house. I had to leave everything to be forced to a place where I knew nothing and no one. It was like leaving your favorite childhood blanket. I was going to a place where no one who knew my name better yet they...

Compare Two Psychological Approaches to Health and Social Care Provision.

...Compare two psychological approaches to Health and Social care provision. Case Study. Demi Lovato is a well-known actress and singer from the USA. Demi Lovato was diagnosed with bulimia, bipolar and self-harm in 2010. She had struggled with a “really unhealthy relationship with food" since age 8 after suffering bullying, and her self-mutilating behaviour started at age 11 as a means to “cope with her emotions and depression”. Demi attended rehab for these mental health illnesses, and from this is now back on track and has had a very successful career. Approach 1: To help treat Demi’s bipolar and self-harm, the cognitive approach would use talking therapy, where a therapist/counsellor sits with the individual and allows the individual to talk about their problems and with this find ways to help the individual work out how to deal with negative thoughts and feelings and make positive changes. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an active type of counselling. It is the first-line treatment for outpatients with bulimia. CBT is used to treat the mental and emotional elements of an eating disorder. Approach 2: The behavioural approach would help to treat Demi’s bipolar and self-harm by using techniques to minimise stress levels. Behavioural therapy aims to change harmful and unhelpful behaviours that an individual may have e.g. eating disorder. The behavioural approach system controls approach motivation and goal-directed behaviour to achieve rewards. It is activated...

The Media’s Role in a Woman’s Beauty

...The Media’s role in a Woman’s Beauty For such a long time, for as long as anybody could remember women have consistently been perceived as the inferior and weaker sex. Many may argue and say that this isn’t the case anymore but unfortunately it is considering the fact that although women now have equal rights as men and aren’t necessarily controlled by them anymore, men still are considered the dominant, stronger and more powerful sex. Due to this, women's physical appearance plays a very important role in society. Because of women being perceived in such a way, the only thing that gives women absolute power over men is their physical appearance, a man goes weak for a beautiful female. The sad thing is that we have let society define the beauty of a women and a major part of this society is the media. Women have always been perceived and portrayed as sex symbols, as if that is what they are only good for. Men and others in society don’t care about a woman’s intelligence if they look good. Our society has let a woman’s looks overshadow everything else that she is. Our society, has constructed itself into a society so image obsessed when it comes to women, in which color, body figure, and every aspect of a woman’s face is the source to why people approve or disapprove of that woman. Media affects the way young girls and adult women all around the world view themselves. This is why our generation of women is so self-conscious about their physical appearance, and this...
