Objective: The purpose of this lab is to identify what the unknown object is made of.
Procedure:
Object was placed on digital scale to measure its mass in grams(g). -Mass 1:23.7g Water was poured into graduated cylinder and initial volume was recorded by looking at meniscus in milliliter(mL) -Volume measurement 1: Initial Volume-31.0mL Object was placed into graduated cylinder carefully and final volume was recorded by looking at meniscus in milliliter(mL). -Volume measurement 1: Final Volume-34.0mL The measured volume was calculated by subtracting the final volume from the initial volume in milliliter(mL). Volume measurement 3: Initial Volume-29.9mL and Final Volume-33.0ml Measured Volume:3.1 mL, Density:7.6 The density value was calculated using the following equation by adding the three density and dividing by the number of trials. x ̅=(∑x)/N x=7.8 The possible error for the density value was calculated using the equation for standard deviation. s=√((∑(x_i-x ̅ ))/(n-1)) s= ±0.1 After taken the error amount under consideration, the object identity was chosen by picking the choice that nearest to the given density.
Results and discussion:
Density #1:7.9, Density #2 :7.9, Density #3:7.8, Density Value:7.8, Error: = ±0.1
A limitation occurred because the amount of water being poured into cylinder wasn’t consistent. A conclusive conclusion of the unknown was made. With the error, the range of unknown density was between 7.7 and 7.9. The only possible choice of the unknown was iron because its density was 7.9 g/cm3 and 7.9 was included in unknown density range. The density should be recorded with two significant figures. The graduated cylinder limits the required significant figures because it gave three significant figures instead of two. This means that when the density was calculated rounding to two significant
