...Depression in Children This paper describes the primary issues that encompass childhood depression as it investigates the illness itself, the methods of treating it, and the current scientific thoughts that frame its modern debate. The result shows three main targets that are associated with childhood depression: 1. Childhood depression is difficult to diagnose; 2. There is not a consensus from among experts as to the efficacy of child self-reporting; and, 3. Treatments of this mental illness vary in intensity and in mode. Depression is a terrible mental state that robs people of relationships and experiences that contribute to contented lives. Every person feels down or sad for short intervals. This is a part of life; however, clinical depression can linger for days, weeks, or months at a time, causing the sufferer to lose interest in family, work, and recreation. We are accustomed to adults who have bouts with depression, but when this illness comes down on the life of a child, it causes us to step back and react with disbelief. We question whether a child can be persistently sad or apathetic, or disengaged. After all, we reason, childhood is a happy time. Maybe it is because of some chemical imbalance in the brain. Maybe it is inherited. Maybe it is the result of a chaotic domestic life. For whatever reason, childhood depression is real and is recognized as a powerful detriment to a child’s wellbeing. The literature reflects are growing...

Major depressive disorder also known as unipolar depression or recurrent depressive disorder is the most severe depressive disorder out of all of the depressive in my estimation.  Major depressive disorder is a condition in which affects a person’s family, work or school life, sleeping, eating and general health. Depression

...Depression Teresa Collick HCA/250 April 24, 2016 Depression has always been a major health issue going back for many years. Initially being called “melancholia” it appeared in the texts of the Mesopotamians in the second millennium. It was then thought of a demonic presence that required a priest to be in attendance. The understanding was that depression wasn’t considered a physical issue but a spiritual or mental illness. The Babylonian, Chinese and Egyptian civilizations also believed this. Their treatment for depression was to beat, restrain and starve the sufferer in hopes the demon would leave their body. On the other hand Romans and Greek physicians saw depression as a biological and psychological condition. Their treatment suggested massaging, music and special dieting. Baths and a drinking blend of donkeys’ milk and poppy extract were thought to be a relieving agent for depression. Staats, Nemade, and Dombeck (2007) Today millions suffer and struggle from major depressive disorder to seasonal effective disorder, dysthymia and bipolar disorder. For one to fully understand what a person deals with when they have depression, they need to know exactly what this illness is. Depression is a mood disorder that causes one to feel sad constantly and have feelings of disconnect with normal life. It affects the way one feels, thinks and behave. It tends to disrupts lives emotionally and physically. (Psychology...

...strong and outgoing individual, I just lost it and shut down to the point where I could no longer be the mother I had always strives to be to both of my sons. I shut down to the point I let my sons go live with their fathers. I had always put my children first in my life. I would be at their schools either helping out in their classes or just volunteering at the school. Every day we did family time and every night I read to them. But after my mother’s passing something came over me that I did not understand, and I did not care to understand depression. At each passing day I could see and feel less and less of me until it got to the point I did not leave my house I stayed in bed day in and day out. I was in so much pain after my mother passing. The pain and hurt I was feeling at the time, and the feeling that I did not understand depression grew stronger each passing day until it had total control of me and my life for ten years. Depression itself does not show single handedly, but comes in many different faces. For example: 1. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) normally occurs during the winter months. Symptoms may surface as anxiety, irritability, and day time fatigue and weight gain. 2. Bipolar Disorder which is characterized by extreme lows and are followed by periods of extreme highs. “Surveys from around the world indicate that between 1 and 2.6 percent of all adults suffer from a bipolar disorder at any given time (Merikangas et al.,2007; Kessler et al.,2005)...

Depression

...A potential killer—depression Imagine that there is an illness, breaking out without overt symptoms. More importantly, you may not totally treatable from it because it may emerge and relapsed for many times. According to investigations, there are around 25 millions of people in Japan got this illness and in Hong Kong also reaches almost 5 millions of people. What I am talking about now is not a cancer, not an AIDS. It’s a psychological illness -- the depression. Today I would like to share what I've learned about the affect of depression about the transformation of mood and willpower. People who got depression, most of times are in an obvious and persistent low mood. They lost interests of life and thinks that all the things need to do of life are missions, which is tough to accomplish. It was like, as Andrew Solomon said, the opposite of depression—the vitality of life, seems to seep away in that moment. Imagine that if a person finding his life is meaningless, without vitality, remaining painful and suffering. What would they do? After knowing how it changes a person’s mood, we’ll pass to the willpower. As the saying goes, willpower creates people, so to say the destruction of one’s willpower is also destroying one person. When self-abasement attacks a person directly, reducing his confidence and the person keep on blaming himself, all of these could disaggregate a person step by step. Here are one example, she's a poet named Maggie Robbins...

Stigma Of Depression

...Ultimately, a person’s mood fluctuates over a period of time. At certain points, one can be happy, and it will continue this way for a couple of days or weeks or months. Then one day, they’re not having the greatest day or week and they begin to feel a bit gloomy. There are some who suffer from major depressive disorder, which is a bit more intense than one’s normal standard of sadness, and this makes it harder for them to go about their every day lives. How The negative stigma behind mental illness, and depression in particular, is unwarranted. Depression has become a serious issue these days. Whether it’s seen in adults or teenagers or children, it has been ignored and belittled causing the outcomes to become more tragic. In 2007, a study was conducted in students to determine a percentage of students that felt sad or hopeless, considered attempting suicide, and made a suicide plan. It has shown that 28.5 percent of students felt sad or hopeless, 14.5 percent considered attempting suicide, and 11.3 percent made a suicide plan (Growing Up, 2010). Our society has made it a priority to overlook...

Causes of Depression

...2. What are the causes of teenage depression? How can teenage depression be treated? According to Focus Adolescent Services, depressive ailment in children and teenagers is defined as an illness when the feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and despair persist and interfere with a child or an adolescent’s ability to function. Depression can describe a normal human emotion; it also is referred to as a mental illness. There are many factors that contribute to depression in teens such as having and making friends, separation or divorce of parents, and breakup of a loved one. Peer relationships contribute significantly to social and cognitive development. In reality, the single best childhood is not receiving good grades, and not classroom behavior, but rather, the ability to get along with another child. Children that are mainly disliked, who are aggressive and disruptive, who are unable to maintain close relationships with other children, and who cannot establish a place for themselves in the peer culture are more susceptible to depression. Teens without friends tend to be more lonely and unhappy. They have lower levels of academic achievement and develop low self-esteem. As the teens get older, they are more apt to drop out and become involved in delinquent activities such as drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, and rebelling against authority. Another factor, which contributes to depression, is the divorce of parents. Divorce is a difficult adjustment for...

It states that 5% of teens in the United States suffer from depression (Poncelet, 2015). As a Psychiatric RN, most types of depression have passed this way. There are two types, but both can intertwine at some point. Noticeably now a days, many are coming into the unit depressed by bullying. The cause of picking this topic was something this writer came across in the community paper. It was a high school student who did not know what depression was and what she was feeling, until her best friend died. She went to the Board of Education meeting to bring up teaching this subject in their curriculum. It has still not been decided. Another concern was the rate of suicide over the past few years in the community. After just explaining the rational for this paper, you will also learn the summary of the teaching plan chosen to get the information of depression to teens, how it felt and the experience learned while doing it, the response of the lesson taught, and lastly what areas of strengths and weaknesses could be worked on further. The Depression

...reach broader layers of the public. The rise of social unrest during the Depression heightened the political concerns of artistic works, while New Deal programs gave artists both federal recognition and the funding and space to work out new cultural forms. Technical changes, like the popularization of the radio, changed how accessible culture was and to whom, and an international break from formalism and modernism also worked to produce a popularized, socially conscious tendency in American art. During the Depression decade, Washington State, often seen as marginal to national art history, hosted some of the most innovative theatre, musical, and performing arts work in the nation, with sometimes global resonance. It is one of the ironies of the Great Depression that the emblematic cultural institution of Washington State, the Seattle Art Museum, was created and privately funded during the darkest days of the economic crisis, when tens of thousands were losing jobs and homes. SAM was a gift to the city from art collector Richard Fuller and his wealthy mother Margaret Fuller. In 1931, they hired UW architect Richard Gould to design a museum sited in Volunteer Park and pledged much of their personal art collection to the city. The building, which now houses the Seattle Asian Art Museum, opened to the public in 1933. The SAM story reminds us that not everyone suffered or even lost money during the Depression and reminds us too that philanthropy accelerated in the 1930s, as some...

Depression

.... The Great Depression was a period of unprecedented decline in economic activity. It is generally agreed to have occurred between 1929 and 1939. Although parts of the economy had begun to recover by 1936, high unemployment persisted until the Second World War. Background To Great Depression: * The 1920s witnessed an economic boom in the US (typified by Ford Motor cars, which made a car within the grasp of ordinary workers for the first time). Industrial output expanded very rapidly.  * Sales were often promoted through buying on credit. However, by early 1929, the steam had gone out of the economy and output was beginning to fall. * The stock market had boomed to record levels. Price to earning ratios were above historical averages. * The US Agricultural sector had been in recession for many more years * The UK economy had been experiencing deflation and high unemployment for much of the 1920s. This was mainly due to the cost of the first world war and attempting to rejoin the Gold standard at a pre world war 1 rate. This meant Sterling was overvalued causing lower exports and slower growth. The US tried to help the UK stay in the gold standard. That meant inflating the US economy, which contributed to the credit boom of the 1920s. Causes of Great Depression Stock Market Crash of October 1929 During September and October a few firms posted disappointing results causing share prices to fall. On October 28th (Black Monday), the decline in prices turned...
