Antonio’s quest to understand is long and with every one question answered, two more come up. At the beginning of the book, he is a innocent boy with no sins and a young and pure mind. He did not have many questions besides the questions a normal boy would have. There was one questions that was always on his mind, the question was to be a priest or to be a cowboy. His mother wants him to be a priest but his father wants him to a cowboy. He is not drawn to one more than the other. The father was a cowboy when he was young so he probably wants him to be like him because he knows how great it is to be one. There was many people that had a big impact on his life and how they shaped him into the young man he was. There was one person that had a bigger impact him than any other person on him, Ultima. Ultima was with him from the beginning literally she helped his mother help her deliver him. From what the book tells us is she helped deliver antonio but she was not there for a couple of years till he was around six years old. That's when she arrived at his front porsche and changed his life forever. Ultima changed his life but she also changed his ideas about the afterlife and the gods that are real to him. She showed him that there are things that can not be explained at that time with a scientific answer. The things Antonio saw changed his beliefs by they made him question how and why his god would not do something about all the evil that was happening right in front of his eyes. Here is one quote that made Antonio really question what he really needs to do with his life “I do not want you to waste your life in dreams, like your father” (15.86.87). Ultima said that and she also said this too “I saw the old woman who had delivered me from my mother's womb. I knew she held the secret of my destiny.”
