It was precisely that moment, when I was lying in bed, contemplating where everything fell apart, where I was stuck wondering how I got to this point, where exactly had a fallen off course, where exactly had my life crumbled, to leave me wondering in my own dark despair? It was one of those cold, dark nights, after yet another helpless day, the kind of day that drags out, and noting seems to go right. That was the moment I realized something needed to change. Depression, it’s a messy subject, and is harder to explain to someone who doesn’t understand. It’s not having the motivation to get out of bed in the morning. It’s total lost of self motivation. Now take that lack of motivation, and sprinkle some anxiety into it. The small holes poked in the depression is filled with anxiety, the terrorizing fear that if I don’t turn an assignment in on time I won’t graduate, but at the same time wanted nothing to do with starting the assignment. A constant battle with my own brain, is as if two divorced parents are at dinner together. That’s what I was under, constant pressure, fear, doubt, and a swelling in my chest. Session after session with my councilor, and nothing gets better, the motivation is still gone, the fear is still present, and my life is still spiraling out of control. Having something to believe in, having answers to questions recently unanswered. That night, in my room, I was going to establish a relationship that had since faded away with God. In the first few days, I didn’t have much of a clue what I was supposed to do, or where I was supposed to turn for guidance, so I started by praying. In fact, the newly discredited ideas are not too different from the old, suggesting that Keynes may have overestimated the ability of people to learn from their mistakes. I discuss the parallels between these two watersheds in recent economic history in three steps. The first and most important step is the causes of the crises and their relation to economic theory. The second step is the spread of the crises as they affected the whole world. I close with the final step, recovery—at least as far as we can see it at this point.
