...This may be the last you ever hear of me, so I figured that I might as well write to you about my experiences of life in the trenches. Basically it’s a living hell, everyday I go through the constant fear of disease and death. Never knowing when the enemy will attack. Never knowing when my life would end. I’ve seen it happen to, too many already. The weather conditions here only enforce death. It’s below freezing, and when the night strikes, it gets so cold that even our clothes and blankets freeze solid. Many of us have actually suffered from frostbite, which has caused some of us to lose our fingers. The dreadful rain, it would flood the trenches and leave everything muddy, and as a result, leave us with a delightful gift called trench foot. The only thing I look forward to here is death, and its bittersweet arrival. Speaking of bittersweet, the food here is anything but that. Neither bitter nor sweet. We don’t have much food, and the food we do have isn’t in the best condition. A hot meal here, is like trying to find water in a dessert. Most of our meals consist of canned corned beef, bread and biscuits. Though, they aren’t of the highest quality. Quite the opposite actually. The taste is just indescribably disgusting. Well, anything tastes good when you’re starving, I guess. The food isn’t the only thing disgusting, these trenches are filthy! ...The first thing that I noticed upon my arrival in the trench was the rats. It seems to me that the soldiers devote an almost equivalent amount of time waging war on the rats as the Germans. The biggest difference is that they have a fair chance at defeating the Germans. Some of the rats are the size of cats- large cats. They have overrun the trenches and rage a form of guerrilla warfare that none of the men are prepared to combat. ...The DJ Booth Even while standing inside a DJ booth can be loud and obnoxious, the excitement of playing music and controlling a huge crowd sends and unexplainable feeling through your body. When I first step into a DJ booth at Club Centers, located in the heart of Rochester, New York, my nerves start going crazy and butterflies hit my stomach so fast it feels like I have to puke. Just the sight of three turntables and an eight-channel mixer in front of my face is like sending a little kid into a candy store. While standing in front of my tables, I look to my right and I see my soundboard. This high-tech, silver plated sound machine stands about seven feet tall with about three hundred switches and knobs that control high pitches, low pitches, medium pitches and all of the digital effects. This soundboard is used when I put a shiny new record on one of the turntables. This will distort the sound quality of the song. The music sounds like a fire alarm, starting with a deep sound then rising to a high pitch screaming noise. As I look to my left, you see my beautiful blonde light girl working my light board. While the music is playing really loud, she will hit certain buttons that will make multi-colored lasers go in different directions and make many different shapes. ...Stuart Hall’s seminal paper Encoding/Decoding (1980) arose primarily from Hall’s reservations regarding the theories of communication underpinning mass communications research. It worked on the assumption that the ‘media offered an unproblematic, benign reflection of society’ (Proctor, 58). Mass communications research became prevalent after the Second World War and was funded by commercial bodies with a desire to know how audiences could be influenced more effectively through advertising. According to the mass communications model, the sender (mass media) generates a message with fixed meaning, which is then communicated directly and transparently to the recipient (audience). Hall’s paper challenged all three components of the mass communications model ; arguing that – (i) the message is never transparent to the audience (ii) meaning is not simply fixed or determined by the sender; and (iii) the audience is not a passive recipient of the meaning. Hall’s encoding/decoding theory focuses on the different ways audiences generate (rather than discover) meaning. Hall’s theory re-addressed the themes of the Uses and Gratifications theory : examining audience power over the media, rather then the media’s effects on the audience (Katz: 1959).
