Designing forAn Experience: Design Approach to Human-centered

Abstract
My thesis attempts to understand experience as it is relevant to interaction design. Based on the work of John Dewey, Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, and Richard Carlson, I identify two types of experience in user–product interactions: satisfying experiences and rich experiences. A satisfying experience is a process–driven act that is performed in a successful manner. A rich experience has a sense of immersive continuity and interaction, which may be made up of a series of satisfying experiences. Based on this definition, I identify a set of design principles with which to create products that evoke rich experiences. These principles are intended to encourage designers to think about how to create user–product interactions that suggest values and communicate meanings that enrich the quality of life. Narrative plays a key role in these design principles. Our series of life experiences form a narrative; the values that designers impart in an object form a narrative which is elaborated

Designing Effective Multi Generational Learning Experience

...CBT’s provide a way to present it and they have tests that you can take to make sure that you are retaining the right information. If you don’t do so well the personnel simply keep re reading the information and retake the test. The startup costs are initially expensive but as time goes on the self-efficiency of the product will outweigh the costs. You don’t have to pay a trainer, use expensive paper materials. The article I chose was Designing Effective Multi-Generational Learning Experiences. It elaborated on recognizing the unique learning preferences of the four generational cohorts now driving America's economy. Identifying inclusive learning strategies to design multigenerational learning experiences and actively incorporating technology mediated learning methods to meet generational learning needs. This in turn will expand an individual's instructional design strategies to include generational learning preferences. Encourage the application of generational learning strategies to enhance an existing or proposed learning experience. Appreciate the growing body of generational research impacting on workplace learning and performance. Reconcile the...

Design Psychology

...DESIGNING PSYCHOLOGISTS Designing Psychologists Hill Designing Psychologists This article about design psychology really interested me especially since I am fascinated with interior design and I am currently working towards getting my degree in this field. I especially wanted to do an essay on this subject because I realize that it would help me understand the needs of my future clients better if understood the connection between psychology and interior design. Design psychology is the practice of architecture, planning, and interior design in which psychology is the principal design tool. In an American Psychological Association online article written by Lea Winerman, called “Designing Psychologists,” Susan Painter, PhD, and Constance Forrest, PhD, co-owns their own design firm. In 1990, after becoming a psychology professor at Carlton University, Susan decided to pursue her interests in interior/environmental design at the University of California. Now Susan is an urban and campus planner where she can merge her psychology expertise into her interior/environmental design skills into a new field called design psychology. Susan and Constance also design smaller scale places like offices and private homes through their own firm, Forrest Painter Design, in Venice, California. According to Constance, who is a clinical psychologist, she says ”I think the unique contribution that design psychology makes to design is that it...

Mature Marketing

...Top Ten Misconceptions That Sabotage Marketing to Mature Audiences: #9 Designing your website with older audiences in mind will “wreck it.” March 2010 INTRODUCTION Common sense tells us that the more often people engage in an activity, the more skilled and experienced they become—and navigating the Internet is no different. The more comfortable people become with maneuvering websites by using the links, the greater the chance that they’ll find the information for which they’re looking. While this applies to any age group that surfs the Internet, the difference is that teenagers and young adults have grown up using the Internet— whereas people age 55 and over may not be as adept at this ever-evolving technology. Today, more and more older adults are going online: 45% of people aged 70-75, and 27% of people age 76 and over, according to a recent report.1 While these Baby Boomers and mature adults are eager to tap into the almost infinite resources that are available online, they are not as intuitive when maneuvering around sites that are often crowded with information, links, and uninviting designs. In addition, they often have physiological conditions that limit their ability to read, follow, and navigate websites. To enhance the online experience for their older adult audience (and increase the chances of gaining their business), companies must make their websites as usable and accessible as possible. While this would seem obvious, it’s widely believed that changing design...

Service

...Customer Experience The importance of strategic design of servicescape is to create the customer experience towards to service given. Servicescape term coined by Bitner (1992) as the physical environment as designed by service organizations to facilitate the provision of service offerings to spectators which comprise both tangible and intangible aspects. Through these physical environments that have been designed to ensure that the customer could at least feel the service. Thus, this created the experience than never been offered by other Service Company. If the servicescape was designed very well it might give the customer the best experience that indirectly will created commitment and loyalty from the customer to the organization. In the other note, customer experience also could help the organization in designing their serviscape. This could be more successful ways because from the feedback of customer experience that the organization gets, the organization knows what is it that they missed or any important element that they need to improve in designing their servicescape. As for our refered company, DHL can use their customer experience in designing their servicescape. For example, the packaging of their brand in every product that they delivered helps providing the customer the experience towards theirs services as it shows the organization image and convey an external image of what is inside to customers. This element is importance to give the experience to the new customer...

The Basics of Great Ux

...name, defines the experience of the users. That experience determines whether or not they want to come back for more, or run screaming in the other direction. UX is something anyone can do. The problem is not everyone can do it well. I can undertake the visual design for a website, but I guarantee you that it will look dreadful and unprofessional. If you learn nothing else about UX I ask you to remember these two things. Know thy user. You are not the user (in most cases). If you don't know your user base, their habits and tendencies, and why they do or do not perform certain actions, then you can't be expected to design a good experience for them. Even if you are very similar to your users, remember that you are only one person and that does not define the qualities of your user base as a whole. Get to know your users and design the experience with them in mind. The role of a UXer is to have that knowledge, constantly expand it, and then design with those users in mind, crafting amazing experiences that will delight and fulfill them. Let's look at all the possible steps a UXer might take in defining the UX of a product. These steps create the ideal process. These steps aren't always possible to complete in the real world, but we need to cover all of them so that you're aware when you can leave out certain steps and why. Sometimes you don't necessarily leave out a step, but it is melded into another step, or replaced using a combination of experience, knowledge, and intuition...

Facility Planning Floor Plan Part 4

...and design guidelines for healthcare spaces produced by the American Institute of Architects, the average patient just want to feel safe and cared for in a health facility. To address the problems of mistakes in health care and grave safety concerns, important modifications of the health care practices, culture, and the physical settings are necessary and need to be lined up, so that caregivers and supporters are setup for facilitating safe care. This shift requires a brand new approach to the design of just about every space within the hospital environment (Wignall, 2008) Architects, advocate for detailed design resolutions as a major tool in the care of and the better-quality long-term medical endings for patients. Learning from experience the significance of pre-emptive answers and in companion with health care clients to attend to these issues as early as possible in the design process. Retrofitting rooms to accommodate difference in patients is more costly than forecasting from creation for the required space and gear needed during the programming and preparation of spaces.
