When I was younger, I measured my success by how much money I made. Recently, I measure success by ensuring a happy balance between work and family time. I found this to be very hard when I added going to school into the mix. I was not sure four years ago if this could be done. However, now I see the finish line before me and it is becoming a reality.
People enter college for many reasons; this was the first step in my plan for the future. About five years ago, I had an accident. During this time, I was confined to a wheelchair and could not walk. While in therapy to begin walking again, I found that without insurance and very little money, you cannot afford your medication or even a simple wheelchair. During one of my many visits to the therapist, I was introduced to medical sales. I was given free samples of the medications I needed and could not afford at the time. I begin to read everything I could get my hands on to learn about the job of a medical sales representative. I found there are two sides to this job: Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives, and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Sales Representatives. After much research, I discovered, although I loved sales, it was important to me to know I was making a difference in daily people’s lives. This caused me to choose to pursue a career in DME. I wanted to make sure that I had all of the needed qualifications to achieve this goal. Obtaining my degree was one of these qualifications.
Step two was enrolling in a college. As fate would have it, we had a job fair at work and within six months I was in school. I then set down and made a short range goal of finding a job in a durable medical company. My strategic goal was to become the lead sales representative. I started my career late in life so my goal seemed out of reach. Especially when I noticed most of the other representatives were in their mid to late twenties.
